Love the video of the Blue Nuns.

This article (I'm about to post) came out of El Paso just before the Sun Bowl.

From El Paso Times:
by Aaron Bracamontes \ El Paso Times
Posted: 12/30/2010 11:56:09 PM MST

The name speaks for itself.

The words are spoken almost as a synonym for college football history and prestige.

And with good reason.

Hailing from South Bend, Indiana, Notre Dame might just be the most influential college football program around.

From success on the gridiron and in the classroom, to inspirational stories, the Fighting Irish are intertwined with football lore.

It will bring all of that and more to El Paso today at the 77th annual Hyundai Sun Bowl.

Off numbers alone, Notre Dame is one of the most fruitful programs in the country, boasting 466 drafted players, 220 consecutive home sellouts, 102 winning seasons, 43 college football hall of fame members, 30 bowl appearances, 11 national championships, seven Heisman trophy winners and six hall of fame coaches.

The tales of the Fighting Irish are many, but perhaps the two most well-known stories have been made famous on the silver screen.

In 1940, Ronald Reagan and Pat O'Brien told one of the school's most famous stories in "Knute Rockne All-American." While there is much to the story, most people know it simply for the classic line: "Win one for the Gipper."

George Gipp was the school's first Walter Camp All-American in 1920. He would die soon after his final season from strep throat. Eight years later Rockne, then coach of the Irish, made the famous halftime speech, as Notre Dame went on to beat Army 12-6.

"I liked Rockne and all the success he had," said El Pasoan Jose Castillo, 71, who has been a fan since he was in elementary school. "Everything from the Gipper to the Four Horsemen, I love it."

From there the list of names are endless. Tim Brown, Joe Montana, Leon Hart, Brady Quinn, Golden Tate and Joe Theismann have all worn the golden helmet. But it was Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger who was featured in another memorable movie.

Cinema aside, the Irish faithful say that the name Notre Dame is enough in itself.

"I've been a Notre Dame fan since the nuns told me to in Catholic school," Castillo said. "There is no other university as far as I'm concerned."

Mike Golic, a former defensive lineman, went on to have a professional career followed by becoming the co-host of the Mike & Mike In the Morning radio show. Both his sons, Mike Jr. and Jake, are on the Notre Dame team.

"Quite honestly, we didn't win as much as I had hoped," said Golic, who graduated in 1985. "But I enjoyed my time there and I hope my kids do that as well."

Golic and his brothers, Bob and Greg, played against Miami and now his son will continue to rivalry.

"You say Notre Dame and it is just so entrenched in college football," Golic said. "They aren't quite the same as they used to be, but you don't lose that prestige with bad seasons."

And the list goes on of Notre Dame's impact on the college game. The "Notre Dame Victory March" may be the most recognized college fight song, while the sign, "Play like a champion today," can be seen in locker rooms everywhere.

I've felt good about ND only to be slammed back to reality too many times in my life to look forward to football just yet... let the end of last year linger imo... sorry, is was it is

I'm good with Euro soccer, NHL and spring training for now... looking forward to baseball in a big way... they had a down year last year for sure, I'm expecting a great bounce back.

Actually, I'm going to survive quite well due to IE and all the great insider commentary that you guys make about the recruiting season. I find that the recruiting "trip" is very engaging just like a vast mystery novel, and until something like a Tuitt de-commit threat occurs, nearly wholly enjoyable. Thanks IE.

Soccer. After almost 26 years of life, I finally have my yearly sports figured out--College Football season surrounded by European Soccer.

I prefer Euro auto racing myself.

Recruiting helps...
My guitars really get me through though...thank GOD for them.

NHL? Baseball? Those sports shouldn't be even mentioned in this thread lol

Well Jayhawk, for me it's the whole Big East, but the question is: what do you do after March??? [by the way, the whole Beast-of-the-East, maybe 11 of them, are coming to get the rest of the country in the tournament---fear the Panther, the Orange, the Cardinal, the Hoya, the Wildcat, the Storm, the Mountaineer, the Warrior, the Bearcat, the Huskie, and, most dangerous of all, the Leprechaun!!!]. ... cue dramatic off-stage music ....

while it does suck not having the awesome post win feeling I do enjoy the feeling of not having to worry or be pissed off if we are playing like **** on saturdays. Its a nice relaxation period where i can dabble in my other interests and enjoy them, not use them as a distraction as i did against MSU, stanford, and Navy.

I'm training for a 10k Mud Run, and a Triathlon this summer, so I am pretty busy. Time's flying though, it's almost spring, so I'll start surf fishing, and once summer hit's the days fly by.

Thank you high oracle.

You're most welcome, Most Elevated Alum With Football Savvy. I can only hope that I span enough ND generations to (wryly) satisfy your hunger.

I've never played anything more than schoolyard, sandlot or "quad-lot" touch. Ergo, I defer to you and you brothers.

Long Live Notre Dame.

Long Live The University of Notre Dames's commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics.

I too am taining for a sprint tri, and a couple of half marathons this year. I also plan on doing Ragbrai in it's entirety this year. For those who don't know, it's a week-long bike ride across the entire state of Iowa. Lot's of partying, followed by 80 mile bike rides everyday. Sounds horrible, but the small town charm of Iowa, and binge drinking at night make it all worth while!

If you are having withdraws watch a freaking Big East basketball game. There is enough physical contact in there to cure anybodys fix. You wont even feel like youre watching basketball.

That's cool. I've never done one, this will be my first. I'm aiming towards the second half of July. Swimming a quarter mile in a pool is one thing, the ocean is an entirely different animal. I want the water to warm and get a solid month of bay/ocean swimming before I take on the North Atlantic competitively.

The only 10K I ever attempted was to drink 10K beers in college.
I didn't make it.

I will say this, when Notre Dame wins their bowl doesnt it make life during the offseason just feel better? I mean seriously I'm in a good mood talking about football this offseason. :)
