Has anybody seen how the situation with the SAE fraternity at OU has blown up today? Video was obtained from a bus full of SAE brothers (looks to be headed to a formal of some sort) with them chanting an overtly racist song of some sort, which referenced lynching and also used the N-word profusely. Backlash was quick from the OU black community, specifically from the football program. They even had a player decommit over this debacle.

Are any of the rest of you guy fraternity men? I am (Pike) and I can't imagine how I'd feel if this was my fraternity, or if I was an alum of this chapter. Despicable.

Read about this through out the day, and there is no room for this on any college campus.

I also stumbled upon a reaction from LB Eric Striker, not his greatest moment.

It's deplorable and it goes against what fraternities are suppose to be. A united brotherhood that dedicates its to uphold the tradition of the house and university, while also contributing the commitment to those 2 to the community. To basically insult a large portion of the student body, including a VAST majority of the major sport athletes, is just boneheaded to its core. These bigoted morons deserve every bit of hate and criticism that comes their way. Way to represent your university dumbasses.

I wasn't a big fan of Striker's reaction either, but every word he said was well deserved. He just could've articulated it a lot better.

Not that they really had any other choice given the circumstances, but I thought the swift response by the OU President to terminate university affiliation with the chapter was a good move. There was no attempt to try and sweep this under the rug. Also, the national fraternity HQ of SAE condemned the fraternity, as well. They'll likely lose their charter. Hopefully they can figure out who exactly was on that bus and expel them from the university.

It's easy for me to say that I wasn't a fan of his reaction, but I'm not a young black male who has had to endure this experience. Even though he might've (and he admitted as much) made a poor choice in making this video, I like that he reached out to the media and made an attempt to give a more thoughtful interview.

SAE has never been my favorite fraternity by any measure. They're typically made up of kids from exceptionally wealthy families. Nothing wrong with being wealthy, but way too many of their members are snobs and asses about it, thinking they're above the law, the normal rules of civilized and decent behavior, and just generally insufferable and entitled pricks. Johnny Manziel would make a perfect SAE.

In the late 80's, the Bama chapter got shut totally down when it was discovered that several members were directly or indirectly involved with dealing coke out of the house. A few years later, they were suspended again for failure to adequately comply with their requirements for having been reinstated. The basic issue was members having a "how dare they do that to us" attitude.

They were overtly racist in my student days and the OU crap doesn't surprise me at all. I picture the typical SAE alums as Skip and Biff living off a trust fund and spending their days getting drunk at the club and laughing about the darkies. Lovely people.

I lose pretty much all respect for a person when they make comments like the SAE chant. I don't get it at all. I feel like most racism is just a superiority complex thing, and it's just sad.

SAE pretty much stalked me about joining when I was a freshman at Cal St...was never a frat guy, the chapter at my school was very integrated, but so was the entire school so....

They're just a bunch of stupid college kids, but they're gonna learn a big boy lesson now, and should, in the words of a Kevin Hart, ' They gonna learn today!'

I don't think this is a clear and consistent representation of SAE at all guys.

This is as rogue a group of frat boys as I've ever seen.

It's sad.

I'm sorry to all of my African American friends and family for this shit.

What a mess.

I was never cool enough for fraternities. I joined Tau Beta Pi but all we did together was solve word problems and see who could come up with vulgar differential equations.

My boys and I, after almost all of us turned down SAE, formed our own 'frat'... Delta Phi Pimp... The pimpmode squad.

(A LOT of) dudes in a fraternity might as well have the words, "punch me" written across their forehead, and this will just make that perception worse.

So I guess I do not understand this dynamic...one guy did something after the fact...really? Is that what Frats do...make people forget who they are in order to belong?

Make no mistake this goes to the heart of what everyone in that bus is (except 1 person)...racist...not all of them. Coward...to a man! You can't tell me that when they sit down to tell their parents what happened, a good number of dads will want to know why junior didn't stop it, much less participate. I can't think of a more horrific thing for a dad to be faced with...my kid is a spineless bitch...SMH!

Lots of accounts coming out that this chant has been popular in SAE houses across the south for years now.

eta: I feel pretty strongly that frats are antiquated and have no place in modern university life

One of the most underrated aspects of Notre Dame, IMO, is the prohibition of Greek life. It's easy to act like this is something isolated to this frat at OU but I know first hand of at least a half dozen* frats who do overtly racist crap, not to mention the penchant all frats have to get rapey. And when I say overtly racist, I'm talking "Old South" parties where they hire an entirely black wait staff... and don't even realize there is something messed up about that.

This is also why I don't understand how any self-respecting African American ever goes to play football at a place like Ole Miss (or really anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line) with the culture down there.

*As of 2006-2010.

Because the opposite side of the douchey southern frat coin is the smoke-show southern sorority girl.

Yeah, well they'd still exist, right? Just not clustered in sororities? Sans Greek life they wouldn't all be obsessed with Greek life status and frat parties. Win-win.

O I completely agree. Just directly responding to the why football players go to the school part of your post.

OU also lost a big time 4* OLINE commit from this as he was on campus for their junior day when this broke...im sure this one isn't going to be helping their recruiting efforts

Thought the same thing, but Ole Miss seems to recruit just fine...
