So I see the magic number as 23. That's how many commits they will finished with, along with 5 5th years.

6 remaining recruits:

- 1 RB/QB
- 1 WR
- 1 DL
- 2 LB
- 1 DB

Any word on Mahone, or the rumored transfers from the 3-4 to 4-3 conversion?

There are rumored transfers? Who, like, linebackers that don't really have a home anymore? Looking at the depth chart you don't see a lot of likely candidates. And would need to happen before the season, right?

That is what I am saying.

As it became apparent that holding on to the old 3-4 was mostly smoke, persistent rumors of "a number of players transferring" cropped up in more than one place. I am thinking if these guys don't like BVG's defensive changes, and have two years of eligibility remaining, that may be a situation where a player rockets. I wonder if these guys sent out inquiries and are waiting for responses, or didn't get the responses they liked.

I was surprised because I saw the majority of the team being in the degree completion program, unlike Geo, Stephon, or Troy.

Yeah as of right now, that would seem like a likely plan of course. Everett, Martin, Springmann, 2 of Schmidt/Councell/Grace and maybe a corner (Hardy/Farley) depending on if we could get an elite recruit at DB or not.

Mahone has been suspended for this year(at least), but he hasn't been kicked off the team yet, I believe. That's why he is still on the roster count as of now. As far as transfers, I won't speculate.

Right now, and I waited to put anything more than a question in this thread, I am getting the feeling that the staff is using momentum to turn up the talent level. In other words, where in the past this would have definitely been a year for a small class, this year it is going to be sink or swim for seniors looking at a potential fifth year.

A) There are good, young players at every position (or at least position group.)

B) There is more solid leadership than last year, and maybe more overall than there has since Kelly has been at ND.

C) The coaching staff and schemes on both side of the ball are evolving and it looks like some program shortcomings have been addressed.

D) ND football is slowly being successfully being rebranded, and is becoming more mainstream and desirable.

Number has always been in the 22-23 range and I don't think anything that has happened with Sykes or Mahone has really changed that. All it changes is who the spots are allocated to:

RB: absolutely must take one more.
LB: absolutely must take one more, probably want 2.

All other positions are luxuries.
DL: 1-2 with emphasis on pass rusher depending on who wants to come.
DB: Up to 1 more if it's the right guy and we have room.
Offensive skill position: 1-2 if they're the right guys (i.e. the caliber of Newsome or ESB).
QB: Up to 1 if an elite guy decides to change their mind.
OL: 0. Probably don't target any even if we get a flip from Tillery, but possibly consider one more OT if that happens.

So a realistic good finish would be Jamabo, Bilal, Coney, Newsome, Reid + swinging for a late deciding five star somewhere.

If Springmann and Grace are healthy, I dont see how they are not asked back. They both were frequent players, even starters in Grace's case. Unless we have more attrition, I personally think only 5-6 more 2015 recruits are needed:

Jamabo
St. Brown
Coney
Bilal
??? (Hopefully a DE prospect)

I'd say 6-7 at this point. As you stated, the DE prospects (Cowart, Lucier-South) and a DT prospect (Gallimore most likely, Wilkens possibly).

Certainly wouldn't write off K Russell for 2015. He's talented, but strikes me as a future captain and four-year guy. Also, I think you missed Councell, who at this point I'd figure as a likely redshirt. And would be very surprised if Farley isn't back unless he gets lapped on the depth chart this year and leaves on his own to play elsewhere.
Of course there will be transfers, etc. They are harder to predict.

If Councell is able to contribute there is no way that he doesn't play this year imo. I have said this in past threads, but I feel as though linebacker this year will play out similar to safety last year in that there will be some movement until "the guys" are found.

Agreed. And doesn't Councell have two years of eligibility remaining? I don't believe he played as a freshman. He would seem a strong candidate for a fifth year in 2015, is what I meant.

If he starts this year and plays well, I think he'd be very likely to get a 5th year.

Eventually, the staff is oging to have some hard decisions to make.

They need another RB, a DE, and another LB.

They probably should take a QB, and I think they want another stud DT, a stud DB, and a third LB!

That is 3-7 more recruits. We'll see!

Off to the NFL (both would definitly get a spot if they wanted it--as things stand.)
DaVaris Daniels
KeiVarae Russell

If you add KeiVarae Russell and take off Amir Carlisle and Chase Hounsell, you're list is consistent with the OP, leaving us with 29 spots available. I think KVR is more likely to return than not, and I suspect you just made a mistake with Amir and Chase as they should be listed with 5Y options.

With 17 commits at the moment, we are left with 12 spots for '15 recruits and 5Y. Looking at the most likely 5Y to return, IMO it's Golson and Martin. I think Daniels is NFL bound. Amir's fate may be tied to recruiting/health more than any other player, but I like his chances to return whether we bring in two RBs in this class or not. If I had to pick the next two most likely to include in a top 5 (a pretty safe # for 5Y), I'd go with Councell and Hardy.

So that leaves 9 guys -- Hegarty, Hanratty, Springmann, Hounsell, Rabassa, Grace, Schmidt, Brown and Farley -- competing for 7 spots with the '15 recruits. Something to consider is that a 5Y in '15 opens up a '16 scholarship, so the question isn't '15 recruit vs. 5Y, it's '15 recruit vs. 5Y and '16 recruit. The '16 class is on track to be really small at what should be an opportune time in recruiting for ND.

We're at the point in the '15 class that we're only bringing in top guys and could bring in up to six if what we've been hearing about the number is true. I think a safe # is five more '15 recruits (who could all be studs like ESB, Soso, Bilal, Coney + a surprise or two), which leaves those nine 5Y above fighting for 2 spots, but more likely 3-4 due to attrition between now and signing day (6 months).

As you and others have said, I don't envy the hard decisions the staff will need to make. The good news is we should go into Spring 2015 with all 85 scholarships accounted for as any holes will be filled by quality 5Y options and any "misses" will open up spots in what could be a special '16 class.

My though with Amir and Chase is that they were medical redshirts, so they'll likley get a chance to play their 4th years. I'll think that will certainly happen with Amir, so I'll cahnge it for Chase.

I don't think KR is coming back and I am not going to jinx it!
