Too soon to be precise, but we're gonna have at least 10 5th year seniors assuming Golson and Daniels (assuming he gets readmitted) stay instead of going pro.

I agree. Looks like a lot of guys that I would love for us to bring back at this point.

It looks like we only lose three guys on the offensive side of the ball after next year: McDaniel, Koyack and Lombard. We already have three offensive commits. That's ridiculous.

We should (hopefully) be entering the 2015 season bringing back 10 starters on offense, with plenty of amazing linemen who could easily fill Lombard's spot.

I'd take a whole lot more than that. Everett Golson, Amir Carlisle, Davaris Daniels, Nick Martin, Matthew Hegarty, Conor Hanratty, Tony Springmann, Chase Hounshell, Jarrett Grace, Ben Councell, Eilar Hardy, Matthias Farley are guys I'd consider depending on what we do on recruiting.

I just don't see it. Farley, Hardy, Hanratty, Carlise, and Hegarty are all highly doubtful to come back. Especially with the quality young players at those positions.

I could see a situation (depth worries) where Springmann, Hounshell, and Councell get asked back to go with Golson, Daniels, Grace, and Martin, but the other guys are all long shots IMHO.

I'd be surprised if we take more than six 5th years.

Possibly they wouldnt want to come back. Actually thats a good point. They may look for playing time elsewhere. But if they want back, I'd want more than that back.

Similar to the "way too early" rankings produced by publications such as ESPN, speculating the composition of the 2015 roster is a subjective matter depending on a multitude of variables that include, but are not limited to, player development, injuries, level of on field success, and decisions made by unpredictable 17 year old kids.

A recent example of future rosters stochastic volatility would be the inclusion of Luke Massa for the upcoming season.

Categorizing the possible 5th year players can be used as a theoretical starting point:

Most Likely to Return
-Everett Golson
-Nick Martin
-Tony Springmann
-Jarrett Grace

TBD
-Amir Carlisle
-Davaris Daniels
-Matthew Hegarty
-Conor Hanratty
-Chase Hounshell
-Ben Councell
-Eilar Hardy
-Matthias Farley

Likely Moving On
-Anthony Rabasa
-Joe Schmidt
-Jalen Brown

As noted by Brooklyn, with a roster of 59 returning, the additions of 4 to 8 5th year players could result in the next recruiting class be between 22-18. This number will likely be in constant motion from now until signing day.

One interpretation for a small class: QB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, OL, OL, OL (9 on offense) DE, DE, DT, LB, LB, CB, CB, S, S (9 on defense).

Possible variations:
-Tyler Newsome is used only as a punter, and we recruit a place kicker.
-Defections occur and a position of strength becomes one requiring additional numbers for depth instead.
-Blue chip athletes decisions. Talent usually talks and accomodations will be made.
-Less 5th year players are taken and the 2015 class is 19 or 20 (and in that case we aim to take 4 on the DL).

Currently, I was hoping Mahone would land somewhere to get on the field. I know he was hurt last year but I had high hopes for him coming in.

Highly doubtful? One of Farley/Hardy will almost certainly be asked back. We will need at least one, if not both, for depth if nothing else. Hanratty could very well be a starter this year, he will be back. I find it hard to believe Hegarty or Carlisle aren't asked back. Veteran OL depth is crucial and we would only have Mahone, Folston, and Bryant as returning RBs without Carlisle.

I basically just don't agree at all with your assessment, especially of Hanratty and the safety position.

Would you come back if you knew it would be "for depth if nothing else"? I don't think I would.

Get a chance to play for the University of Notre Dame for another year?? Yeah I would. It's not like they would be scout team players they would still see the field a good amount

If my alternative is "the real world" or trying to make a practice squad, you bet your ass I would. Look at who will be asked back this year. Utupo, Massa, and Heggie? will be depth players or special teamers. You're acting like being a depth guy at Notre Dame is a bad thing. You get one more year of football and anything can happen. Plus you get to put off being an adult for another year. Stay as long as you can. Cherish it!

Definite guys that will be asked back: Golson, Daniels, Grace, Martin, and Springman. I think Councell, Farley, and Hegarty or Hanratty have a shot.

That sounds about right, except I'd say all four in the "have a shot" category are more likely to be asked back than not. Farley's a two-year (or more, depending on 2014) starter. Councell, if he comes back strong from his injury, is a valuable backup to Jaylon. Hegarty and Hanratty are experienced O Linemen. None may start, but if they're willing to be #2 on the depth chart I'd think we take them. Carlisle, too.
I agree Daniels is probably off to play on Sundays, though, especially if he has a good year.

I've given the 2015 class numbers some thought and this is where I'm at...

1. I'm okay with the 2015 class being a relatively "small" one (16 - 21). We will be bringing back a lot of 5th year leadership, and all of the talent we've brought in with the IrishMob and GoldenArmy will be all over the two-deep. 2015 is our year to compete for a National Championship, leading to what is hopefully a stacked 2016 class, our 4th "stacked" class in a row if 2015 pans out as I expect.

2. IMO, we will bring back at most 10 fifth years, but more likely in the 7-8 range when all is said and done. I think Daniels is gone as he will play himself into a top 3 rounds type of NFL prospect after the 2014 season, and I'm perfectly fine with that given the youth at WR. Golson is essentially a lock to return. As is Nick Martin. The other twelve players will fall into one of four categories: NFL (doesn't look likely for many), asked to return and does (5-8 guys to go along with Golson and Martin), asked to return but decides to go start for another team (3-4) or not asked to return (1-2 guys).

3. If we bring back 10 fifth years, and we enter NSD with 59 players returning (not likely given attrition), that leaves 16 spots. We've entered the past two seasons with 17+ commits so I expect our class to be close to completion by the start of the 2014 season. Hopefully that means a tight-knit group of recruits and some late highly ranked commits ala the #IrishMob13.

4. By NSD 2015, the 2015 class will likely end up closer to 21 than 16 due to transfers, medical redshirts, less than ten 5th years brought back, etc. Therefore, months of "this is going to be a small class" talk will be for naught. It probably won't reach the 24 and 23 we signed in '13 and '14, respectively, and it won't compare with the 28-35 all of the SEC schools will sign, but we'll continue adding quality depth throughout our roster with a number of studs (we already have 3 committed) and a few carefully mined diamonds as we do every year.

5. It will be really interesting to see what areas of the country we have success / focus our attention in 2015. Of the current top 100 recruits (24/7 sports), only 40 come from outside of SEC country. Of those 40, most are from states we've had challenges in (CA), states bordering SEC country (VA, NC) or states with strong in-state programs (OH).

I am thinking and hoping for about 17 commits, but it will be a very high "star average." Meaning ND gets a smaller class, but it is very high quality. I would not be upset at all if we got only 17 commits, if they are the right 17 commits. We are off to a good start. :)
