Not sure if there are any Utah Jazz fans out there. Jerry Sloan passed away from complications from Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29209339/long-jazz-coach-jerry-sloan-dies-age-78

Didn't realize that Sloan had accepted the University of Evansville coaching job in 1977. He only had the job a few days before he ended up changing his mind. That season was when the entire Evansville basketball team was killed in a plane crash.

Played at Evansville before going to the NBA where he was a pretty good player. IIRC played for the Bulls.

Big part of my basketball life. The first basketball team I was a fan of was the Bulls. Living just outside of Chicago, him & Norm Van Lier were the first big influences on me when I started playing basketball.

My family's from Evansville and it's hard to describe how big Sloan & the Purple Aces were in EVille. I think it was in an SI story that mentioned UE's attendance was top 10 in the nation during the 60's-70's even though they were in the College Division. I originally committed to UE but pulled an Abiara 4 months later. Ironic that I'm writing this on an ND site but my game was modeled after two guys, Jerry Sloan and Bill Hanzlik.

Later on in life, he was obviously the Bulls opponent during the last two Finals. Game 6 of the '98 Finals was the last game where I considered myself a fan of a basketball team, pro or college. So I guess my fandom started and ended with Sloan.

One of my bucket list sports memorabilia items is to find a period correct Aces #52 sleeved jersey like Sloan wore. I have his #4 Bulls framed.

RIP Jerry

This past week, a Hawaii musical-legend died. Willie K was honestly kind of an asshole in real life, but his voice was amazing. If you saw the last episode of "Parts Unknown" that takes place in Hawaii, Willie K is the guy singing at the family gathering.

His version of O Holy Night is, in my opinion, the greatest version of all time:

Former Auburn coach Pat Dye passed away today at the age of 80 from liver and kidney failure. He'd been diagnosed with Covid-19 a month ago, but had been largely asymptomatic. Dye was a star lineman at UGA then spent several years as an assistant at Bama under Bryant before becoming a head coach and eventually getting the Auburn HC job.

Dye was a very good coach and was AD at Auburn. IIRC his tenure ended due to some NCAA violation(s)?

During Dye's interview for the head coaching job at Auburn, he was asked by a member of the search committee, "How long will it take you to beat Alabama?" Dye's reply was "60 minutes."[2] At Auburn, Dye achieved a record of 99–39–4 (71.1% win rate) over 12 seasons. His 99 wins are behind only Mike Donahue and Ralph Jordan for the most in school history. Under Dye's leadership, the Tigers won four Southeastern Conference championships (1983, 1987, 1988, 1989) and Dye became only the fourth coach in SEC history to win three straight (1987, 1988, 1989). He received SEC Coach of the Year honors in 1983, 1987 and 1988. Dye was also Auburn's Athletic Director from 1981 to 1991

Former Baltimore/Washington Bullet's star Wed Unseld has passed. Not a tall center, but the guy knew how to rebound. Played on a championship team with Elvin Hayes.

I was in the stands when he brought his Pitt championship team into ND stadium in '76. The grass looked to be about 5" tall to slow down Tony Dorsett. First play Dorsett gets stuffed. Second play he goes something like 70 yards for a TD. lol

Majors was a great coach.

From the AP.

Former Florida and NFL receiver Reche Caldwell was fatally shot Saturday night in his hometown.

Caldwell’s mother, Deborah, did not return phone messages left by The Associated Press on Sunday, but confirmed her son’s death to the Tampa Bay Times.

She said police told her they believe her son was ambushed outside his home in a possible robbery attempt.

Charlie Daniels died earlier this morning from a stroke at the age of 83.

Saw him 5 or so years ago when he opened up for Travis Tritt at an Indy Casino. He still could set the fiddle on fire. Awesome concert even though both are decades away from their height of popularity. Both still sounded as good as they were in the 80s/90s.
