If you're genuinely interested in the "welfare queen" narrative and how it came about I would recommend watching the documentary Boogie Man. It's about Lee Atwater. He ran Reagan and Bush seniors campaigns for president. Pretty fascinating stuff.

It's not so much whether or not there were "welfare queens" it was the fact that it was blown waaaay out of proportion in terms of how a very small proportion of welfare recipients was negatively impacting the country as a whole. As Atwater makes clear it was also not a coincidence that these shady characters were consistently Black.

When I asked how the welfare queen was an example of using racism to keep the poor poor, the response I got was that Reagan and others made up the welfare queen, to capitalize on people's racism and turn people against welfare. Presumably, the poster meant that they intended that the government would be able to cut public assistance, thereby increasing the poverty of the poor. That seems to be a failed strategy, though, since there are more and more public assistance programs available, today.

None of those "protestors" out there are protesting some noble cause. They're "protesting" the fact that a dude assaulted a police officer, tried to steal his weapon, and then got shot. Now they're "protesting" the fact that another guy resisted arrest and died in police custody. This isn't the new Civil Rights movement. The whole philosophical outlook on the movement seems to be "black people died and the cops were white...RAAACISTTTTTTTTT!!!"

Does racism still exist? Of course it does but most people are in their current life situations because they choose to be there. At some point people have to take responsibility for their own lives. That is the only way you can move forward. Black America is in a prison of their own making.

And "oppression?" Come on. The idea that the current situation in America even is even vaguely similar to the Holocaust, slavery, or what is going on in the Middle East is absurd. Beyond absurd.

Thank you white god for telling us what we're allowed to be upset with. A father of 6 being killed by a cop for raising his voice is totally acceptable.

Except your jail sentence will be 18 times longer for crack, a drug associated with poor & black people, than cocaine, a drug associated with rich & white people. Black people also get longer jail sentences for the same crimes as white people.

Isn't that racist? To associate someone's income level, based on the color of their skin?

No it's true. Cocaine is more expensive and is associated with richer people for that reason. Crack also started in the inner-city and black neighborhoods, which isn't a coincidence either.

The man died of a heart attack. That heart attack might have been brought on by the actions of the police officer, but aren't you the guy who tried to tell us that dealing drugs and doing drugs only had SECONDARY effects on people's lives, so they shouldn't be jailable offenses?

It was a homicide. It was ruled a homicide. Homicide means being killed by another person.

That is what I think of you. However bad off your life is to give you this demented worldview you definitely deserve it. Maybe you should stop feeling sorry for yourself, making excuses, and being a victim and your life wouldn't be in whatever rut it is in.

I believe in white supremacy, until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people ... I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from [the Native Americans] ... Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.

Emotional, illogical support of anti cop movements I can handle, opening my eyes to the Duke's racism was too much and I had to neg him. I was happy living in ignorance, the Duke is ruined for me now.

There should be a term for hating someone for no reason and then having that hatred confirmed. That's how I feel about John Wayne. I hated his movies and then I learned he was a big ol racist.

'Tosh.0' Production Assistant Mistakenly Shot and Killed by LA Sheriff Deputy - TheWrap

Read this story, and then imagine the production assistant was black.

People right now just go "wow, dumb cop, what a tragedy."

If all facts were the exact same and the production assistant was black, imagine the outcry from these everything-is-about-race people. It'd be all "oh the cop showed up and ASSUMED that the BLACK man was the criminal! Racism!"

That's what bothers me so much. Stats show there were MANY more white people gunned down last year by cops than black people. I don't know what the numbers look like precisely when you adjust for %s, but in terms of raw incidents that could make the news the number is much greater. The question should be why are so many PEOPLE getting gunned down by cops and why are cops generally not held accountable?

But there are a lot of insulated and ignorant people with a warped set of facts who are never going to get it. And that makes me sad.
