Well as someone who lived through the Clinton era in Arkansas and despises both Bill & Hillary and knows people who lost loved ones during that time, I’d love to hear more about what you know outside of memes & gifs. I agree a lot of is “at least plausible” but how much of it is that we want it to be true so Slick can finally be punished for his crimes?

I don’t know any more than you. I’m just laughing at it being on level terms with 'crackpot conspiracies' like Obama’s BC or Hands up don’t Shoot,... which at this stage are beyond plausibility. Beyond that I’m just being my usual light hearted self, maybe that meshes poorly with some of our topics. I have a rule with IE I self imposed a LONG time ago,... this is a fun site, have fun with it. If this place becomes overly serious, it's time to leave. I have enough heavy dialogue without IE.

I feel ya. And you’re right that the Left’s conspiracy theories are flat out lies compared to what could be plausible w/ the Clintons.

White supremacists and other terrorist groups hide behind the 1st. 2nd and 4th Amendments and run into groups opposed to aspects of legislation that may be considered infringements on those with some legislation like the Patriot Act receiving opposition. Communication over the Internet, confiscating their supplies of weapons, seizures of properties while prosecuting not only acts but verbalized and credible violent threats and all those who make them require threading the needle facilitating prosecutions while protecting our Constitutional rights. Looking at just the acts and not credible threats which have been prevented may be the best way of gauging their threats to our multi-cultural, multi-religious society.

Groups who pose a legitimate threat to the public can’t hide behind the bill of rights. Amendments 1-4 are there to protect individual liberty from a tyrannical government. I like every person standing behind them and being protected from impulsive power grabs.

I’m not interested in trading my liberty and Amendments 1-4 for anything else.

We've reached that divide, respectfully. I'd favor each local area deciding what's right for them. No more with a state pre-empting a metro area's choices within the Constitutional guidelines. Constitutional carry for those areas that want that. No need for sanctuary counties and law enforcement in those areas refusing to enforce state laws. Seventeen states have red flag laws. More will follow. I'm more interested in lessening the threats of depriving innocents of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, often due to hate of specific groups. I favor the democratic process of following the referendums of the citizens. Both arguments have their validity.

None of the sponsors had any comment, according to Adweek. FedEx, which has naming rights to the stadium, deferred to the Redskins for any comment. The team declined to comment Wednesday night. It was telling, one source said, that none of the sponsors has come out in support of keeping the name.

Better chance now than before. It was equally telling that none of the sponsors commented deferring to the Redskins. They don't want to get caught up in this.

Yup, money talks. I just can't see them looking at what's happening around the country and thinking "hmmm let's keep the name".

You’d think the players would protest until they changed the name at this point.

Vegas odds on the new name

Here are the betting odds for the next team name (courtesy of SportsBetting.ag)
Presidents +300
Generals +400
Lincolns +400
Americans +500
Kings +500
Memorials +500
Capitols +600
Veterans +600
Jeffersons +700
Roosevelts +700
Monuments +800
Arlingtons +1000

Some suggesting the Redtails, for the Tuskegee Airman. Personally, I like the Washington Monuments. But monuments don't seem to be too popular these days either.

I’m fine w/ the student-athletes leveraging their services to demand southern schools change their stances or that their respective state flags are changed. I’d ask why they committed to such a racist institution in the first place but then I remember they’re kids.

Now the beat writers & national press who cover CFB don’t have that excuse. Why weren’t they doing in-depth op-Ed’s on why particular schools in the south still had connections to confederate heritage that is deemed offensive to black student-athletes? It’s not like this was just discovered. It’s been public knowledge for decades, yet the sportswriters had to wait for a few kids to make it an issue vs doing the heavy lifting themselves.

You're right the old sports writers should have taken a stand long ago. But we all know what happens when someone takes a social issue stand in sports. Theres really never a convenient time to address something like that, and the pushback the kids get by people going "hur durrrr too late!" certainly doesn't help.

Also, its probably naive to think that a sports writer doing a big exposé will just get to keep their access to their sources at the school. Look at the pity party going on for the Redskins name change, I'm sure that everyone would be very understanding and super ok with a story about how theres racist elements to some southern schools.

That’s a broadly sweeping generality in all regards.

“Old” sportswriters? We agree that should’ve & didn’t happen. What about all the highly educated writers currently? Racism is racism so shame on them for worrying about access to their schools. Besides a Pulitzer Prize trumps all that. If they’re “scared” for very real reasons as you noted, then they lack the character & fortitude to do their job which shouldn’t be about being popular with the coaches & general public. Now if there’s stories of their employer not running their stories exposing racism...that’s another story but wouldn’t a reporter have even more of a story. Also, (honest question)is there proof that Redskins beat writers or media folk have been prevented from doing their job b/c they wrote a piece calling for the end of the nickname?

And I don’t want to let these multi-million dollar earning coaches off the hook either. How can Nick Saban & Dabo Swinney be employed at such a racist institution where they look the other way and don’t use their sway to demand change?

The pissing contest just needs to end b/c both “sides” have proven they do not hold the moral upper hand over the other side.

A sportswriter taking any sort of anti-university public stance is obviously suicidal. ... just like any reporter asking awkward questions (anywhere) is not likely to get recognized at Q&A time.

There is no easy mechanism for this. The oft-criticized student idealism is probably the best way to get media and public attention to focus these things.

And, in regard to that, so-called "pragmatic/ shut-up-and-get-a-job" adults need themselves to shut up and let the nation's youngsters speak their minds. If they in the end have nothing useful to add to the betterment of society, then why the fear and the mocking attempts to muzzle them? They have by themselves no law-making ability, and in fact most of them are still learning (rather than close-minded.)

My guy, welcome to the Left! lol a lot of your points are really good and progressive there, I think we'd welcome ya over on the darkside here.

I think OMM said it perfectly and much more eloquently than I could. We demonize the young people for not bringing up their issues with a University and then pull cry baby shit and claim "omg cancel culture is ruining everythinggggg!!" when they do. The only solution some will accept is "Shut up and play".

So reporters aren’t courageous enough to stand up for racism b/c of their job? In other words, they can’t put their money where their mouths are?

To the bolded, where’s the outcry been about the recent movements at Ole Miss, Mississippi St & Texas? Most folks I’ve listened to personally & in the media are fine w/ removing the “Confederacy” monuments/flags. The point about “cancel culture” is the ridiculous extremes some take it to before it boomerangs back to them which would be hilarious if not so sad.

I mean isn’t the one thing we can all agree on regardless of religion, politics, race or culture is that no one is perfect? Has anyone claimed Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, Columbus, etc were infallible and NEVER made a poor choice? The Apostle Paul murdered Christians before becoming a Christian. To say their virtues aren’t admirable while recognizing they may have believed or participated in some horrible things is silly.

Is that really what the “progressive, open-minded, freedom of speech & thought loving Left” is all about? Those adjectives directly contradict the actions they’ve displayed lately. There’s a huge difference between a liberal & a Liberal.

And regarding that last question above, I do realize the small minority of rioters & cancel everything crowd do not represent the views of all on the Left. But that begs the question, why let their infantile actions define your ideology?

Purely my opinion, but it's all about self interests, and I'm not talking about just the writers.

If we're talking about schools like those in Mississippi, kids going to school over the last several decades didn't say anything when committing to, or not committing to, MSU or OM. They did what was in their self interest. I'm sure many of the AA kids that accepted a scholarship had offers to schools in states with less history, or a less scandalous flags.

And in general, just typical students and faculty are all part of the mix as well. It's self interest, and also fandom. If we're talking about writers, I'd bet a good portion of beat writers are local, and likely fans of the school. And let's be honest, before the Floyd incident, most players, writers, coaches, students, etc., didn't really have issue. And if they did, it didn't rise to the level to impact their decisions, and certainly didn't rise above their own self interests.

Reporters may not have been as aware of some of the confederacy ties that some of those schools have. As well, reporters largely dont have the same negative feelings towards the confederacy that young AA men have.

The large issue with people terming it cancel culture is that so often people are duped into believing something ridiculous like "the Left wants to cancel Ronald McDonald!!!". When in fact it's someone just trying to stir the pot for example - Vin Scully being "cancelled".

To your third paragraph....yeah the majority of people understand that. I've said it a million times, statues that celebrate losers and people who's contributions are overwhelming negative should be taken down.

Are the BLM movements offending you? Is the message of a change to systemic racism offensive? Or are the actions of some questionable characters causing you to write off a whole movement?

I realize the white nationalists who feel emboldened by Conservatives and feel a strong connection to Donald Trump, don't make up the majority of conservative supporters. But it begs the question, why let them continue to define the ideology? - Now see how stupid that sounds?

Agreed. My first knee jerk thought was “why the hell did you commit 3-4 years of your life to a racist school in a racist state in a racist conference?” But their kids and don’t think that deep until it truly affects them personally. I think all athletes who are college hopefuls should do themselves a favor and learn the history of how a huge number of current HOFers played at HBCU in the 60s-70s if they wanted to stay close to home down south or they’d go to a midwestern/northeastern school like the B1G or ND. Go look at the measurables of players like Carl Eller, Willie Lanier, Doug Williams, etc. Those cats were D1 4-5 star prospects in today’s world.

As far as the writers, I was speaking more to the sanctimonious national writers like the ones at The Athletic or USA Today. Give me Andy Staples (who is a national writer) over Dan Wolken every day of the week.
