Can't sleep... In about 5 hours and 46 minutes, I've got an appointment to put down my first baby...Our family pet, Clover. I'll spare you the details, but if you think about it this morning, send a little prayer her way. She's been a great pet and anytime there was an Irish game, she always sat down in the man cave with us, win or lose. She enjoyed some "spirits" with us in victory, and enjoyed some spirits in defeat. She's a good girl....

Thanks all for your consideration...

Eddie.

Putting a pet down is tough. I had to put my dog down in December and it was a truly awful experience.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.

I've been down this road six times, Eddie. The last was no easier than the first.

Thinking of you, Clover, and your family.

Putting a pet down is extremely tough. My wife and I went through this a few years ago. She was the first dog my wife and I got when we first met. Shadow was the best dog I've ever had.

The Rainbow Bridge

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

Sorry to hear, Eddie. In this crazy rat race we run, pets seem to be the only ones that get it. Hopefully you can welcome a new companion into your home in time. While it won't be the same Clover, it'll be a blessing for you and no doubt a ND fan!

So sorry for the loss you will endure today. Pets are some of God's greatest blessings to us. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. Remember the good times, and thank God for the time he gave her to you.

I've went thru this before and it's not easy. Sounds like you've put a lot of thought into this and have prepared yourself the best you can. God looks over all of his creatures big and small. Clover will be watched over. Best wishes.

Sorry for your loss. I put my dog down about a month ago and it was one of the most difficult things I have ever been through. She was the first pet I ever really grew close to. I know I will see her again someday and the same goes for you and Clover. Hang in there.

Really, really, really sucks. Know it has to be done but doesn't make it any easier.

Sorry for your loss. Had to put my dog of 18 years to sleep a few years ago and still miss her. When I moved to the West Coast, she was the only family I had so she meant alot.

Clover's a part of you now so you'll carry her with you. Just be there to support her through her journey. May she be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows she's dead. God Bless.

Sorry for your loss. I always try to rationalize the life of a pet as not as meaningful as a human's, but it is impossible to distinguish the two when a dog is brought into your home.

They ARE family, and the unconditional love & joy they proudly display to all in their pack makes them so special.

I...My friend has a Cat named Albert Felinestien and another named Leonardo DiCatrio..... I think its f*cking hilarious.

Naming pets can be an art. It can reflect humor, irony or any anything under the sun. I had a family cat – Figaro, so named by my father because of her resemblance to a Disney cartoon kitty. She (because my father was a dedicated Catholic opposed to any form of birth control, perhaps.) was never fixed. As a Florida cat she was also an outdoor cat. Needless to say she had many kittens in her 21 years.

Names became a challenge over the years. There was OG (Other Guy), NN (No Name) and others that reflected the bottom of the creative barrel. Her final "litter" was one kitten, appropriately named "Solo." Bear in mind that this was years before Star Wars was released.

Not that this any relief. Just a needed distraction, perhaps.

Sorry you had to do this it's very tough. My dog was totally himself even tried to attack a pitbull at the vet, but he had a large tumor rupture that had been removed just a few weeks before but came back stronger. I couldn't make it with my family dog included.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your thoughts and prayers. Yesterday was the most difficult/exhausting days I've ever endured. Yeah, I know, she's just a dog, but to us, it was bigger than that.... She was a family member. She was one of us.

She went fast and was no longer in pain. My dad took off of work and went with me.... Love that man. Don't think I could have gotten through it without him.

Toughest thing I've ever had to watch....EVER. I'm just glad that she's no longer in pain and is hopefully in a better place. Thanks again, everyone.

Eddie.

Anyone who would think "it's just a dog" should never be allowed to have one. I can't imagine what I'd do if something ever happened to my terrier Jack.

Sorry for the loss bud. We all treat our pets as part of the family. They, indeed, become a part of all of us more than we ever imagine. Thoughts are with you.

sorry to hear about this loss, I had to go thru this in 2009 and will have to do it again soon with my pet Chihuahua Pepper. In 2009, and with Pepper I remind myself that in both cases with we gave our pets a great home and life, and did the right thing when it was time to do so.

Got a lot of thoughts about this, but not the energy to flush them all out. I had one dog for basically my whole childhood, and he finally went (at 18) when I was away at college. I wasn't involved in the decision to put him down - my parents didn't tell me it was the end because they didn't want me to leave school to see him or ask that they wait. It was the right thing to do on their part. I hadn't had a dog in the decade since - my life was just too crazy for me to be a good parent to a dog. But now that my fiance and I are almost like real functioning adults, with a house with a yard and steady incomes and less steady social lives, we have two pups: a 1.5 year old and a 6 month old. They are the absolute best, and it makes me sick to think about anything happening to them. It is a feeling that you couldn't explain to a non-dog person. It blows my mind to think I will feel this way x100 when we have children.

Anyways, just wanted to say that I hope you're doing all right and that other people out here know how tough it is to lose a family member.

Sucks bro, 15 minutes before I read this I feed my 14 year old yellow lab a can of soft dog food so I could load it up with meds to treat two different ailments. One hopefully being a kidney infection instead of kidney cancer. Sorry to hear about your difficult decision. My sincere condolences. I may be facing the same decision very soon.
