You could always go with a tuxedo t-shirt. It says "I wanna be formal, but I'm here to party"

Your thread has brought back memories. I had the best senior prom ever. My date was a hot little exchange student from Finland. Her name was Katri, neither one of us knew what the hell the other was saying, but it ends up that doesn't matter after several shots of vodka and quite a few beers.

I wore a black tux with a blue vest and bow tie that she picked out. The family that was hosting her said she picked the blue because it was the color of the cross on the Finnish flag......I was very lucky to be her flag pole for that very special night :)

My son and his Prom date in 2005:

He played, I paid. He chose the tux ... thank goodness he didn't have arrowryan or BobD advising him. Go with the classic look. Add a cane with an ornamental gold head if you can.

I see no need to dredge up a photo of me in my powder blue tux in 1970.

Gotta go tux. I like a little color in a prom tux. Like Ironman said, if you can find a tux that accents your dates dress ... badass.

If you're inclined to go black tie, do it right (see Social Primer's guide to the perfect tuxedo.)

My advice would be to skip the rental and put that money toward a proper suit. It will serve you well in college.

I strongly suggest learning how to dress yourself properly, as most men don't bother, so one can easily distinguish himself in this area without too much effort.
  1. Go to /r/malefashionadvice;
  2. Learn how to dress like a boss by reading all the guides on the side bar;
  3. ???;
  4. Profit.

Jesus on ice skates! I open this thread and you all sound like a bunch of women at a book club or something. OMG PROM!!!!!!!!!!!

I regret the 1 time I did go to Prom. It's such a waste. I'm embarrassed to even admit that I went.

Philly, if you do feel the need to go you should wear a cow costume or something.

Well done suggesting actual class and/or financial prudence, whiskey!! However, having gone to prom in the last year, I'd advise asking your friends who went last year what most people wear. Where I'm from, the tuxedo was simply non-negotiable if you didn't want to look like an idiot. So I think the answer is really up to the social norm at your school...
if in doubt and money isn't an issue, id say go for the tux. better to be overdressed than underdressed right?

That's a fair point. Since NDPhilly's original question was "Suit v. Tux", I assumed either would be acceptable.

No one's going to point out that GB wasn't actually wearing a bow tie in those pictures? Neck tie in all those.

This is a bow tie. Always go bow tie.

All I know is I am pissed, I didn't know you got a complimentary mop head when you rent a tux like GB got. I guess in the early 90's they didn't include those.

Kidding...kidding.

I only went to 1 prom, but many after prom parties. Those are fun. The girls were so horny, it's not even fair. It's like fishing with dynamite.
Sorry to the fathers around lol.

Don't forget the PPK. It's the most important part of the ensemble.
