I have always liked Outkast a lot... but when you can argue your gens' top artist doesn't really sing or play instruments there's something awry for my taste buds... just my opinion obviously.

It seems to me the more time passes pop (and all it encompasses, like who the artist is dating for example) just dominates more and more and the actual musical elements matter less and less...

I do love (or just recognize the talent of) some modern artists and would put them up against past generations though... Amos Lee, JJ Grey, Leon Bridges, Adele, Marc Broussard,... each of these are successful more so for their actual talent than their varying abilities to sell magazine covers... those types of artists are just less and less popular these days though.

Outkast is just flat-out good music.

Eminem will be remembered for his "don't give a f*ck" attitude, on top of being a good rapper, and how he mixed both so well and in such a self-aware way.

Kanye is a legend already *because* he's a douchebag, and because he pushes the experimental envelope (even if the results suuuuuuck).

Those are just the three from the above list that were unbolded. The problem is that these guys aren't complete, well-rounded artists. They don't sing, and play instruments, and write their own songs. And I think that hurts them in the eyes of older generations.

Some artists, like a Kendrick Lamar (or maybe even an Eminem, in my opinion) can transcend that lack of depth to their talents and become "All-Time Great"S some day, simply because of the impact they've had on society.
Exactly for the reasons you described, I don't think any of them will be "classics" in the way we look at The Eagles, AC/DC, or even Nirvana. "Classic rap" isn't really a genre that holds up because people tend to mature out of rap as they get older, but rock spans generations. I think we'll be listening to "Are You Gonna Be My Girl," "Mr. Brightside," and even "Dance, Dance" long after we've forgotten about "99 Problems" or "Stan."

You're thinking of former NBA player and current in-the-gutter Lamar Odom.
No, I know who Lamar Odom is. I'm thinking of someone else. I'll ask the women at work.

Apparently I'm thinking of Tyga. So who's Kendrick Lamar?

The Roots.. would we consider them 'current'??

They're easily one of the best hip hop acts ever imo... so much more depth than you commonly see in that genre... love me some Roots.

The Roots are great. So much talent.

Regarding instruments, I don't have a lot of respect for musicians if they don't play instruments. I'm not saying that it doesn't take talent to do what they do, but I'm sorry... Real music uses instruments.

I personally dislike Coldplay but I think their music will still be loved by many people in 30 years.

Adele vocally is on Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey's level but she doesn't have that "it" factor IMO

basically agree on both points... but there are some singers and some hip hop artist...

like Outkast and Adele just for a couple examples, who are clearly talented far beyond others in that box...

The bolded is very interesting to me. I think our generation is much more pigeon-holed than past generations, in terms of liking only one or two musical genres, instead of being able to have a truly eclectic taste. So it will truly depend on how someone's musical tastes mature.

I'm not gonna listen to "Cyclone" or "Two Step (Remix because Duh)" with my kids some day unless I'm feeling realllllllly sentimental, and even then I will make it clear that those aren't the "Great Ones."

BUT, I will be sure that my children give "To Pimp a Butterfly" a chance, because that's more than just made-for-radio rap, and I'll also be sure that they are aware of who Eminem was in case they want to give it a whirl.

But the Killers and Fall Out Boy are great examples of artists that will be recognized even into the future, because they ARE more well-rounded in terms of singing, and because they've risen above the generally crappy modern pop/rock. They kind of break the walls of pigeon-holing that I described above.

Good call on CP... I'm not really a fan either, but they will surely stand out in this generation as time passes...

There is a common thread across pop culture though here... it's the same in sports...

listen to sports talk radio today.. unless it's the NFL no one talks GAMES anymore, it's all side BS like arrest records or controversies in the sport that rarely occur on the field of play...

music has the same 'sickness' (I would call it that though others may not)... no one cares what actual music or lack there of is being made... it's what shocking shit the artist does out of the studio that matters most.. think gaga or kanye...

turns me off super quick.

Back to Prince... he was an odd cat and that was part of his story but it never over-shadowed his actual music.

We blasted Ruff Ryders like crazy in college... would never put myself through that mess now... haha

Haha, yeah, we used to play this in the locker room before every football game. I tried listening to it recently and I was like...why?

This. I kind of feel that way about nearly all music made since about 2000 though. Probably 95% of it at least.

Yeah, yeah. I think time will tell. Years from now I'm willing to bet the music from roughly the last 15 years is mostly going to be forgotten.

I've actually been thinking about this recently, but more for artists than songs. In 20 years I think the artists from this current generation who will be thought of as iconic/revolutionary include Kanye, Eminem, Outkast, Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Timberlake, and Taylor Swift. Others that I considered include Avicii (people will laugh, but Levels gave birth to an ENORMOUS musical movement), Chris Stapleton, Dave Grohl, and Marcus Mumford.

Kanye - sucks and is a douche...next
Eminem - I think he secured a note in history, but don't know if we get too much more out of him that means anything
Outkast - ok
Jack White - I like some of his stuff and he does follow his own line and seems to be influencing a lot of people, so ok
Kendrick lamar - not up on him too much
Beyonce, Timberlake, Taylor Swift - while all are popular, I see them more as cultural icons than musical ones - you hear more about their lives than their music
Avicii - I will have to look that one up
Stapleton - ?
Dave Grohl - BIG FAN
Mumford - cutting his own path, like the music (when in the right mood), but we'll see on staying power

I am not seeing a whole lot of country being mentioned

(my 2 cents)

Hey, I am in the back half of my forties myself. In 15 years, i don't have any clue what people will be looking back at. Personally, I am amazed that one of the songs from my youth I hear get referenced the most is "I like big butts and I can not lie"

PS my kid and his friends are kind of like the little ones in that South Park clip but haven't gotten to the cynicism yet. But they watch other people do things on youtube and listen to the poster's commentary. My kid was watching this family on a vacation in the Bahamas and was upset because he was only up to part 4 which had been uploaded the day he watched it at 10am last saturday

I'm not convinced he's saving it. Country Radio has almost completely sold out to Cumulus, Clear Channel, and iHeart. I think the only thing that saves the genre is a format split between "real" country and "pop" country.

Or maybe a bus full of Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, and Bobby Bones falls off a cliff. Zac Brown can save himself if he apologizes for "Beautiful Drug" and releases more along the lines of "The Grohl Sessions."

I would agree with this. The more accurate term wouldn't be "saving" but "more of a throwback country artist and not complete pop garbage"

I did really like The Dirty Guv'nahs too... sucks they broke up this past year... I have to think if they were placed in an earlier era their level of success would have been dramatically increased and they'd have stayed together longer.
