Why are people assuming that this team will follow similar trajectories of that of years past?

Who are you to predict the future? What sample size of this team do you have? What sample of Elko? Long? Etc.

Have you factored in strength and conditioning? How does this relate with respect to your expectations? Have you estimated what difference this may or may not have with years past?

Have you considered what difference an Elko led defense may have against opponents like SC and Stanford?

You simply cannot predict this. Period. You cannot generalize. You do not know how the season will play out with the sheer number of variables that are involved with such a complex and dynamic system.

We lost to a better team, by 1 point.
We demolished a solid opponent the weak before.

If you can predict a 7-5 season with that, then you, unequivocally, are better than man.

This is all true. However how do you know that Temple is a "solid" team? They just beat Villanova on a last second field goal. Not very impressive.

Also you are assuming that GA is good. We really don't know that either.

I agree that you cannot make a prediction of how the entire season will play out after only two games. The real question is how Wimbush will develop over the course of the season. As long as he steadily improves we should be okay, as the defense at much looks improved (at least over the first two games).

Just watched the game again. Mike got beat in pass pro a lot. Wimbush was under constant pressure. I know we got some points off of penalty calls but Georgia got 10 off of 2 really questionable calls. Drue T pass inference on 3rd and long and Okwara roughing the passer on 3rd and long. Wimbush was taking those same shots all game and no flag.

But it's Wimbush's fault for not making the Oline play better. He should have forced the oline to open up running lanes for him and Josh.

The way that you keep defending Wimbush makes me think that you are his lover. Holy shit, why can't you accept that he played a poor game (just as the O-line played a shitty game).

I have said before that it is possible that Wimbush will improve as the year goes on but he was rough last night, slow to make reads, inaccurate, and generally he just looked rattled.

Gonna see alot more of Ian Book. The O line was an issue last year too. D is much improved. ND opponents are going to try and emulate Georgia's defense as they contained Wimbush.

Here were my pre, during, and post game thoughts. Lost this one once, hopefully I won't have to retype it again...

Get to campus around 3:30pm. Lots of red walking around as expected. Wait, where's the blue? Crap. This is going to be bad. There's "Go Dawgs!" chants in the book store, and that little cheer that starts "Who's that coming down the tracks?!" I never bothered to learn the rest. Overall the Georgia fans are somewhat decent. They're loud and passionate, but not a lot of "Fuck ND!" are heard on campus. I start noticing broken glass around the parking lot and campus though...not something you see a lot of on Saturdays.

Head to the Grotto, then head over to the 5th floor of the Dome to wait for the Trumpets. Getting close to the arrival of the Trumpets I notice that there aren't a ton of fans which is unusual. For USC it was shoulder to shoulder, every level packed. For Georgia it wasn't nearly that packed...still a good turnout, but a clear indicator our numbers were down:

<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fnick.bartosic%2Fvideos%2F10154633268977827%2F&show_text=0&width=560" width="560" height="315" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" allowFullScreen="true"></iframe>

Some Georgia fans came and waited 40 minutes with us before the Trumpets started. They said South Bend was the Mecca for college football, you could tell they were real college football fans. Asked a lot of questions, they were very cool. Best Georgia fans we met all day...and a far cry from the ones we were about to meet.

Start heading to the stadium after the Trumpets. More broken glass in the parking lot. Get into the stadium and get to our seats. There's a cute shorty in a red dress behind me...but she's loud, and shrill. "GOOOO DAAAAWWGS! GOOOO DAAAAWWGS!" She's right in my ear. I look around the stadium...it's almost all red from the visitor corner and it tapers all the way to the press box across from us. We're pretty much surrounded by Georgia fans at the 50 where we're at behind the opposing bench. Not good. Jumbotron looks awesome though, I hear the only other ND fans near us say "About time they did this." I agree. They show a pump up video with Rockne doing the big speech, followed by highlights with Leahy, Ara, Holtz, all the way up to today. Irish in the crowd are excited. They show the team in the locker room doing their Our Father, crowd loves it. Shows the team coming down the steps and hitting the sign, awesome. "GOOOOO DAAAAWGS!" I hear in my ear again. Teams take the field. "FUCK ND! FUCK ND!" Whatever. I get the binoculars and scope out our old season ticket seats 5 rows up from the opposing bench where we used to make things hell for them...there's Georgia fans sitting there now. I'm pissed.

We get the ball first. Running game right from the start isn't really going anywhere. OL is getting manhandled, Mustipher is clearly struggling getting pushed into the backfield. Georgia's front 7 is very good. Lorenzo Carter looks good, really wish we could have landed him. I'm hoping he's not too disruptive today. On the back of some Georgia penalties we get down the field and Yoon hits a FG, we take the lead. Rock on. I sit down after the FG and I get a knee in the back. I think nothing of it and don't react.

Defense does a pretty bang up job containing Georgia's offense. However, every play when Georgia's on offense "CHUBBY CHUBB CHUBB! CHUBBY CHUBB CHUUUUBB!" Sonny comes into the game "CHUBBY CHUBB CHUBB!" Jeebus. Still, even though Frome looks pretty poised in the pocket, and Georgia's OL aren't world beaters, our defense does a pretty good job considering. We force a bunch of punts, but our offense can't maintain a drive without help from Georgia penalties. Our defense seems to be taking a lot of snaps, I'm hoping they have enough gas for the 4th. Georgia fumbles the ball, which leads to a TD for us. Awesome! "FUCK ND! FUCK ND!" Georgia drives down the field on the next possession though and reties the game.

Next kickoff I think CJ takes the ball and makes a good return...looks like he's down, but keeps going. "FUCK YOU, MOTHER FUCKER! YOU WERE DOWN, MOTHER FUCKER!" Her male companion agrees and repeats what she says. I sit down during the replay, I get another knee in the back. I turn around and smile, she pretends not to see me. Okay. I decide to lean forward on the bench for the rest of the game when I'm not standing. Yoon is money again, so thankful that he's found his rhythm again. Georgia feels like Sonny and Chubb are just always a move away from breaking a big run. They have some good ones, but our Safeties step up and save the day. "CHUBBY CHUBB CHUUUUB! CHUBBY CHUBB CHUUUUB!" Tranquil picks off Frome, he's having a hell of a game aside from the missed Sack on Frome. Rover is the position he was born to play. Defense is still playing good, forces punts until halftime. At some point Morgan landed a crushing hit on Frome, Irish in the stands love it. I'm feeling good considering the way things are going with a 3 point lead at halftime.

Band comes out to play. They do "Wagon Wheel" and form a horse and carriage, galloping down the field. Shorty goes: "OHHH, NOTRE DAME IS SOOO SMART! LOOK WHAT YOU CAN DO! YOU SUCK!" Band plays "Livin' on a Prayer," as they've often done, and they put down their instruments to dance during the drum solo. "NO ONE WANTS TO SEE YOU DANCE! GET OFF OUR FUCKING FIELD! THIS IS OUR FIELD!" Shoot me.

Teams take the field again. "U-G-A! U-G-A!" from our section. "Glory, glory to old Georgia! And to hell with Notre Dame!" I notice myself watching the Jumbotron a lot between plays. It's cool seeing the replays and Tim Brown live on there, and it does seem to help pump up the crowd...for those Irish in attendance. Defense holds Georgia to a missed FG. Wimbush comes out, he's been rather inaccurate today, but it's not completely his fault. OL is struggling, and Georgia's front 7 is getting great pressure. "CHUBBY CHUBB CHUBB! CHUBBY CHUBB CHUUUUBB!" We get the ball back, Yoon is money again. If we win this thing, I'm giving either him or the defense the game ball. Georgia follows it up with drawing a bullshit penalty on Okwara for a late hit. That was a big turning point. "CHEATERS! CHEATERS!" This sets up the TD drive, and Georgia takes the first lead. On the ensuing kickoff "BRING IT OUT, MOTHER FUCKER! BRING IT OUT, MOTHER FUCKER!" I get another knee in the back during a TV timeout, while leaning forward. Obviously not an accident at this point. I decide to stand for the entire rest of the game. I'm 6'3" and usually duck a bit when standing so as not to block anyone behind me. For shorty though, I'm hoping to block as much of the remaining game as possible.

4th quarter starts and Yoon hits yet another FG to put us up again. Defense stuffs the Georgia offense, I'm biting nails. Offense continues to sputter, too many 3 and outs. I'm wondering why we don't go back to the HB screen that Adams picked up 30 yards on in the 1st half. Considering the pressure Georgia is bringing it would probably help keep them on their heels. Other than that screen it seems like most of our offensive success has been coming on crossing routes, Georgia has trouble defending them. We can't stretch the field though, Georgia is in Wimbush's face whenever we try. Running game is dead, and yet I wonder why we haven't seen Dexter at all in this game (Lots of fans in the post game radio show echoed this thought). I'm not sure why we haven't found ways to get EQ the ball. Where were our TEs from last week? Shorty says she wants to have Lorenzo's babies.

Geogia gets the ball back "CHUBBY CHUBB CHUUUBB! CHUBBY CHUBB CHUUUBB!" They take the lead on a FG. Our offense continues to sputter. Defense forces a 3 and out with 3 minutes left on the clock...plenty of time to get down the field and get a chance at another FG. "GOOOOO DAAAAWWGS! FUCK ND!" Lorenzo comes up with probably the biggest play of the game by getting past McGlinchey, sacking Wimbush, and causing the fumble. Game is over. "S-E-C! S-E-C!" from our section. I stay for the Alma Mater, then try to head out as soon as possible. Sea of red comes down from the upper bowl chanting "S-E-C! S-E-C!" Great job, guys. You beat a team by 1 point that was 4-8 last year.

I head to the book store parking lot where the car is. Lots of glass in the parking lot. For the most part Georgia fans were alright around campus. They had a lot of passion and cheers, and weren't the worst group to come to South Bend. The glass though? That was disrespectful. I don't remember the last time I've seen that much. What was more disrespectful? The number of ND fans that sold out and gave up their tickets. It was embarrassing, the team did not deserve that.

My insta reaction to the loss was extreme anger, I'm tired of moral victories. But after a night to sleep on it, I'm proud of the boys, and the D looked the best I've seen it in a while. O struggled, but so did the opponents O. Yards were tough to come by. I really really wanted that win, and I'm sure the team and Kelly did as well. The truth is we will be 5-1 heading into usc week. The sting of this one will fade with each win. I see a much improved team, excited to see the season play out.

This loss did sting! I agree that we should be 5-1 when we meet USC. There are 3 teams that will give us some problems, USC, Miami and Stanford. I am hoping that we can at least take one of those three teams. I think we will have a shot against Stanford this year as I watched them play USC. Stanford looks beatable, but USC looks pretty darned good at this point. Lets hope we take care of business against the teams we should beat and somehow find a way to win 1 or 2 against the 3 tough opponents left on our schedule. It would certainly help ease some of the sting from this loss.

Book makes quick decisions?

Based on what game experience? Lol. His 5'11 ass would have been whalloped last night all the same.

Only going off of what I saw in the BG game. 15-18. Rees made quick decisions too and never looked as awful as Wimbush. Every decision Wimbush made was the wrong one. If book makes quick decisions he avoids getting walloped just like Tommy rarely took a sack of big hit..

Wimbush got knocked around. Inexperience and getting pounded is not a good combination. The worst part was the look on his face later in the game, like he just wanted to give up.

ND had a bunch of chances to put this one away.

Hainsey got whipped a lot. That caused a whole bunch of breakdowns on the line. He also had a couple of bad false starts.

Wimbush was too indecisive running, wasn't accurate and held the ball too long at times.

The receivers dropped a number of key passes.

Georgia's D is easily the best ND is going to face all season based on the games I have watched so far.

I think ND's defense is as good or better as any of the remaining teams on the schedule.

Lost to a more talented team as much as it hurts to say. Georgia should win 10+ every year with the athletes they have.

Georgia is a good team but not a great team, I think they are better than Stanford and everyone else we play this year except for USC. But I think they are exactly what they are ranked now top 15 team in the country and that's it. Their offense is good not great, their defense is great. If it wasn't for them having costly penatly after penatly game wouldn't have been as close.

I have to respectfully disagree. I believe come year end, this GA team is middle of the SEC pack. First game starter at QB? You have got to be kidding me. Any remotely good defense would have ate his lunch. That kid will get butchered against SEC defenses.

Just goes to show ND just is a middle of the road team with top shelf aspirations that just wont be met. The athletes are there. ND gets higher recruited players than most the SEC yet finds a way to lose 75% of the SEC matchups. Sorry folks, ND is never going to me more than a heartbreak for fans.

Which is extra delicious because Adams was pretty terrible in pass protection.

I'd disagree. There was one glaring play where he was late trying to get to a blitzer, but that might have been on Brandon or the OL for not adjusting the protection.

Either way, he needs to be there and make the block, but one bad play in pass pro was all I noticed on the first viewing. Didn't notice him in his pass pro the rest of the game which is generally a good sign. (It also helps that he had a million receptions out of the backfield since our receivers suck, and thus wasn't in pass pro as much as usual)

Post-Game Thoughts Now That I've Distanced Myself From Disappointment:

1. Georgia was clearly the better team. I would go so far as to say that ND was fortunate that UGA didn't have a very good QB, or an experienced QB.

2. Extremely frustrating that ND couldn't capitalize and get some breathing room at some point. The lucky bounces seemed to be on ND's side, for the most part, which we didn't see at all last year... and they squandered the opportunities they had.

3. Kraemer needs to be the mainstay at RT. Hainsey's mental errors and issues in pass pro are noticeable, whereas you barely notice Kraemer.

4. It's one thing for McGlinchey to struggle against an elite front 7. It's another to get beat by a simple and pure speed rush during the biggest drive of the game. He's always struggled to setup properly against speed rushers, though, so it's not a shock. That's why he had so many false starts last year.

5. Still can't make heads-or-tails of the playcalling in terms of how they handled Wimbush. At times, it seemed like they were protecting him and calling an extremely conservative game, even when they let him drop back to throw. Other times, it seemed like he had the freedom to throw down field, but threw the ball with terrible touch/accuracy. He looked like a first-time starter playing against a sound defense. Why not test the middle of the field at all? JUST TRY ONE SINGLE SEAM ROUTE AGAINST THEIR BACKERS, WHO KEEP VACATING THE MIDDLE TO CHASE ADAMS HORIZONTALLY. Help your QB by feeling things out, not by going to the well that hasn't been working.

6. Dexter can't block, AND he has stone hands. Adams didn't play well, but it would have been worse with Dex on the field IMO. You could argue that he might have found space on those off-tackle runs that went nowhere, but I'd argue that UGA was flowing too well regardless of who would've been carrying the ball.

7. UGA got aided by a HUGE penalty... but ND was competitive in the first place because of UGA penalties. Our most successful offensive plays, and field position that lead to Yoon's field goals, were almost all results of penalties. And that's fine! That's how football goes. I'm not taking away from the drives where we got points. Just saying that UGA wins by 17 if they don't shoot themselves in the foot with 4/5 different 15-yard penalties, just like ND wins by 17 if they capitalize on those penalties. ND didn't use the breaks that they got.

8. I didn't see BK with a play sheet in his hands at any point... it seems the offense really is on Long's shoulders. Too many read plays that weren't working, not enough poking-and-prodding to try and find adjustments to make. Wimbush was throwing high all game, so maybe that's why they avoided the middle of the field in the pass game. You're asking for an INT that way. But at some point, you have to try it. (The cynic/conspiracy theorist in me wonders if BK talked to JS after the game and said: "I told you so. Let me call the plays again.")

9. Alize Mack is still a huge meh. They hype and the talk is all hot air to this point, and I find myself aggravated by it. I hope he can put it together.

10. The defense looked really good, whether it was in part due to a crappy UGA offensive line or not. They got pressure, they got home on some big plays when Elko drew them up, and the coverage was good enough that it took an OBJ catch and some pure burner plays for their receivers to look decent. I'm excited to see how the unit progresses.

11. Nyles Morgan made a couple of nice plays, but I noticed Martini and Coney more when the defense was stacking up or stringing out the UGA backs for minimal gains. Perhaps that's by design, as opposing offenses neutralize Morgan, and Martini/Coney are getting the shine for cleaning up, as they should. But I worry that it could be attributed to Morgan not shooting gaps like he needs to. We'll see moving forward, I guess.

12. This team is gonna beat the absolute dog shit out of BC.

My thought: the team will definitely not lose to BC now, whereas they most likely would have had they beat Georgia. ND beats Li'l Bro by 4 on Saturday

4 point or 4 TDs? I just laid down a fatty bet on ND -11 over BC before that line moves.

Still haven't seen about the first 2/3 of the game, but what I did see, Wimbush looked rattled and had little to no time. This was true of the running game as well. Do you think that when Wimbush was trying to pass downfield he was an inexperienced QB rattled and hearing footsteps, thus the even greater inaccuracy this week. Also, would explain the large number of receiver screens, little to no time required for the play to develop. Also, that would tend to explain a number of the QB runs...a lot of bang-bang plays.

Wimbush is simply not a touch pass thrower. he's a play action bomb guy. He's not DK, EG or Rees for that matter IMO. People shouldn't expect him to play like the guys who have gone before him.

Points. 2012 was the last year they beat BC bad, right? I have no confidence that they'll beat the Eagles into submission.

You're way more confident than I am ha

I will be utterly shocked if we don't win by 2 TDs or more, and I'm currently 9-3 ATS on this young season so get on board the money train while you can.
