1. Really bad game for Tommy Rees. For the first 3 quarters, I was pretty much sure that what I was seeing was this: If you can get a little pressure on Rees; he doesn't exactly panic, but he DOES hurry his throws and completely abandon good mechanics, causing a lot of inaccurate throws. But ND did a good job of protecting, in the 4th, and he was still having problems. Not sure if that was because he was pushing too hard, or what, but you had to feel bad for the kid..
...this is who he is...its tiresome, but the alternative seems not to be better.
2. I'm still perplexed by SOME of the play calling and/or formations. We empty the backfield way too often with Tommy back there. At that point, the defense can completely sell out out against the pass. They know that there is no threat of Tommy running the ball. And to have an empty backfield on 3rd and 2? WTF?
...IDK they see the players all week...my bigger concern was the lack of push from the O-line. The best tool to controlling momentum is a run game...how is it we couldn't run at all in the second half...a little run success and we don't see two picks from Tommy...etc. This to me is bigger than the crappy refs, or TJ's fumble, or even Tommy's INTs. The run game matters...a lot...when you are playing away and need to swing or hold MO.
3. Congratulations to TJ Jones, who had a big game (6 catches, 149 yards, 1 TD). TJ is well on his way to 1,000 yards receiving. He has 891 yards, with 2 games to go. TJ has been a very consistent player on a very inconsistent offense, this year.
Yea TJ took some shots, kept playing, and made some really nice plays...The fumble ...again meh, it happens
4. Jaylon Smith continues to look like he belongs on the field, as a true freshman. He still makes some mistakes, but doesn't look lost at all, out there. Sheldon Day made some big plays, as well, but had the HUGE bonehead play, when he did not realize that the ball was still live. Prince Shembo is hard to block.
Defensive line...I can't rag on them too much. Dbacks are the worst tackling secondary I've seen in a long time...we Don't tackle for sh!t. Inside backers were just slow to arrive everywhere tonight...not sure whats up there. Pass coverage from our Senior Corner was not good. The TD, well I can see that one...just how it unfolded. The PI call...yea, yea he can have his back to the ball...BUT WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO...good hell turn and intercept the thing...it hit him for hell sakes...fvck. Rush was ok...Prince Shembo gets held a lot...no excuses but is there some conspiracy...what does it take to get that called consistently?
5. The secondary is still not tackling well. I've got no explanation for this, other than they just aren't as good as we would like to think they are?
The only thing I can think of is bad shoulders or something...they come up...they get ok shots...they just don't stay wrapped up...its like at contact the hope the guy falls??? WTF
No game ball for a loss, sorry.
Amen...UGLY, UGLY UGLY loss. This is the kind of crap that hurts us on the recruiting trail...lose to oaklahoma...fine. Michigan...ok. Pitt...really?
REFS:
This was really a poorly officiated game. Particularly, I am pretty wound up about Tuitt's targeting call...not because it changed the game...but because it was obviously NOT targeting since his head was down FIRST, and you gotta assume he went low to AVOID helmet to helmet...musberger and the boy wander acknowledged that looking at the same film as the booth...Good hell these guys reminded me of Pac 12 refs/booth crews...and I agree with a previous poster...we need to look at national pool of refs...I got no trust in the ACC after this. ND's play was embarrassing...but the refs' performance was too.
