Curious the impact on the game had Bertrand been sound in tackling and Lewis broken up a few passes.

... or if Doerer had made that FG, or if Styles had one extra step on that deep bomb, or if the refs had called DPI or holding, etc.

I think they could have varied up the run game at least. Buchner at some point. That jet sweep to Lenzy was going to the house if not for the shoestring tackle and Takacs missed block (I think Takacs thought Lenzy had already beaten the guy). More plays like that. If anything, try to give the D a rest. It was clear early on they were gassed.

I also believe the WR's were gassed as well. I watched a recent interview of Coach Norvell and the question came up about running an air raid (pass happy) offense in regards to recruiting. He said it takes 12 WR's on the team to practice and play that type of offense. ND definitely does not have the depth for that even for one game.

Good insights. Dabo once said something similar where he said a Clemson strategy was to run a go route at the same CB a few times in a row, and then sub in a fresh WR and that guy covering him would be gassed so he'd have a matchup advantage.

I’m hoping if Harry Heistand is in fact running the offensive line again, that we see more variety in the run game again. This year was just inside zone and outside zone basically. Look zone is going to be the bread and butter of any modern spread ground game. With HH though in 2017 we had a pretty sweet buck sweep, among other things (a bit more counter / trap mixed in), when it came to running the ball. I’d hope we’ll have a bit more than just basic zone.

Or if Meyer (back when he was still a prick but much less of a prick) chose ND in December 2004.

More I think about it the defensive performance in the Fiesta Bowl was Michigan 2019. The defense isn't nearly that bad, they played a bad game. But some flaws like LB play in space and the secondary were exposed.

But Notre Dame is a good defensive team that played a bad game. The flaws exposed though show what needs to be addressed to be a championship team.

I hope we can field a healthy defense next year and catch some breaks on the injury front overall. We made some serious sacrifices to the gods this past season.

Also, I wonder what would've happened had Jeremy Sample not been banged for a 15 yard personal foul penalty on the kickoff to BC in '93

If Dayne Chryst reached his full potential ... starting by not getting hurt against Michigan in 2010

Still don't know what happened rather it was Dayne just not having it or BK's coaching of Dayne being poor. Dude was 5 star QB recruit.

NDs poor pass defense got exposed against OSU the same way they got burned by UNC. ND played well on defense against the weaker competition on their schedule but when they went up against a passing game that had a pulse like OSU and UNC they got burned. hope they can figure things out before heading to OSU to start next season.

Even after shitting the bed against OSU, we ended up ranked 6th overall, with the 11th ranked defense. Despite its flaws, this was a very good team.

Someone with an ESPN+ subscription needs to check out the ranking of our pass defense, but this is an exaggeration. Cincinnati and Purdue both had good passing attacks, and we didn't get burned by either. UNC started to threaten our DBs, but our front-7 was able to get home against Howell frequently enough to help cover for them. Virginia could have been ugly, but they couldn't do much without Armstrong. It was really only Okie State that exposed our defensive backfield, since we had no KHam and our DL couldn't get to Sanders.
