What I would have done differently:

So, I'll start off by saying, I thought the play calling was excellent.

However, during the entire third quarter, I was hoping that BK would open up the playbook and try riskier passing. Obviously the runs were working, but I wanted to use the second half offense ran almost as a scrimmage.

I wanted to see empty backfields, five wide. I wanted to see some play action passes. Basically, anything that Kelly would consider "high degree of difficulty" I wanted to see.

I know nobody wants to see turnovers, but I would be content with a turnover in that game if it meant Everett was expanding his playbook.

What are your thoughts?

I'm with you. I was sitting there hoping for us to open it up and see Golson take some shots downfield as well as see him run some. There are lots of obvious reasons why Kelly wouldn't want to do this, but it sure would have been fun to watch, and I agree that I think it probably would've helped Golson in the long run since it was a sort of consequence free occasion.

I can't believe how many freshmen played. Not a lot of 5th years available for this class. Too bad we couldn't preserve Okwara. He is a beast at 17. Imagine him at 21. He will have exhausted his eligibility by then. But circumstances are circumstances and we don't have a lot of LB depth. Similar deal with Stanley.

Loved what I saw out of TJ. Hope there's more where that came from.

I'm worried about the corners, but I'm not panicking yet. We weren't gonna play much man this year anyway. Now we'll likely play less, since we suck at it so much.

Had to DVR the game cause I was working so I just finished watching it.

Great to see them start the season off with a win. The O-line manhandled Navy's undersized d line which let GA3 and Riddick run wild all day. We have to continue to run the ball with all the talent and depth we have.

Golson had a good game but he didn't need to do much. Made some nice throws and some bad ones but you expect that from a guy making his first career start. He'll continue to get better each game.

Front seven were as advertised and frustrated Navy's option attack. It seemed like there were always 2 or 3 guys in the backfield on every play. Tuitt is just a beast and it was good to see Manti get his first career INT.

Where I'm a little worried and i'm sure most fans are is the defensive backfield. I know it's game 1 but this is the weakest opponent the Irish will face this year and having an option qb throw for almost 200 yards is a little worrisome. I know they're young and they'll continue to get better and gain experience, but you can't be pleased with what you saw today.

Overall though it was just awesome to see Notre Football again. Bring on Purdue and GO IRISH!

As much as I worry about our shortcomings, looking around CFB at the top 25 scores, there are lots of teams that are struggling early in their games. Not losing struggling, but 14-7 at half, 24-16 at half etc. And these games are against opponents that are seemingly worse than Navy. Regardless, the fact that we came out and took care of business from the get-go, in spite of whatever shortcomings (I'm looking at you, secondary) we may have had, is really comforting for me.

What we saw today, is what we're going to get with ND. I don't think there's going to be much "opening up" of the offense. This is going to be an excellent running attack, and when we are mixing up the PA and roll outs, watch out.

I thought EG looked great. He did look down Eifert, but I think that has more to do with Eifert's skills than EG. Same way Rees always looked down Floyd, you just expect them to make a play. Not saying it's right, just an observation.

The defense will get better. The just spent months concentrating on the option and the passing surprised them a bit. Throw in the fact, we have a freshman as a starter after only a few weeks, it will be alright.

I really like this year's team, and look forward to a great year.

I don't think that's the way it's going to look. They are going to put a few rbs on the field at the same time, run some up tempo sometimes(I wish all the time except against USC and Oklahoma) and run a bunch more reverses and motion out to different formations a lot more. Plus, you'll see some zone read too but I hope they don't do it much unless Hendrix is in because I like the idea of Golson never being touched.

One thing I am mindful of is that preparing for Navy is different from preparing for some of our other opponents with respect to the pass. All week long you play the triple option and your keys. Having them throw is not something you expect which makes Navy effective at it. I think as we see more traditional offensive sets, the play will improve.

The telling stat for me is 1. One turnover on a bad read is okay. EG managed the game, took care of the football and stayed within his game. I loved his es capability and cool demeanor. And yes, I did suffer two italic fails during the game, so don't want anyone to misconstrue my support of him. He is a work in progress, but is off to a good start.

I trust the staff to make corrections going into next week. One thing for sure, the focus was definitely there. Good start to the season.

@NDatRivals: Brian Kelly, "You can’t forget about Robby Toma’s run at the end, because he’s going to talk about it for the next six months."

Kinda surprised that BK played Ronnie Stanley. I guess they are worried about depth on the o-line this year.

-The o-line and the d-line played awesome today. That will be a big time stregth for us.

-Golson played well. He played the way i thought he would.

-Our depth at running back is great. I think I would take our running backs over any one else's.

-The secondary is a concern but the more experience they get the better they will be.

-Our front 7 is excellent, if we can get consisant pressure on the quarterback then our secondary should be okay

-I think Daniels can be a big time threat for the next 2-3 years. "Golson to Daniels for a touchdown!" is music to my ears

-Overall this was a great performance, they played better than I thought they would. There isn't much negative coming out of this game

I think the 2 corners are going to look much better next week against a normal offense. They made them play very deep today, which didn't help sometimes. I'm sure Diaco wasn't expecting Navy to throw this much. Great experience for all those guys. It's going to be very important down the line. These guys can run with anybody, and that is a very encouraging sign.

Very pleased with the overall performance today. If this team continues to progress, get better every day and play tough football, it's going to be a fun season.

Loved just about everything I saw today. Hated the defense on Navy's first drive of the second half...but other than that I am ecstatic. Bring on Purdue!!!

Coach Kelly's emphasis on recruiting for the offensive line and the defensive front seven are starting to pay dividends. Our running back depth is better than it has been, but the offensive line created some huge holes for them. Congratulations go to Coach Hiestand for getting this group ready to go on day one.

Golson looked calm and in command, even after the interception. He did everything he was asked to do. With our running attack, I don't see our quarterback passing for four or five hundred yards anytime soon. We finally have a balanced offensive attack, one that will be more difficult to defend.

We won't see Eifert catching 60 or 70 passes, because there will be fewer opportunities. We are much more balanced offensively.

We finally have an offense and a defense, but like everyone else I'm worried how our defensive backs will do against quality passing teams.

I disagree with your first point. I think this offense is going to open up a lot. Golson's talent ceiling might as well be infinite. It was only Navy but he showed off that same elusiveness yet patience that his HS highlight film shows. His pick today, I don't believe was entirely on him. He was late on his throw but Eifert backpedaled 6+ yards of that route, which in turn caused the safety to break disgustingly early.

We might not see the tempo Kelly ran at Cinci but I do believe we will see the full extent of Golson's arm once he's fully comfortable.

They didn't spend months preparing for Navy's option. Those CB's shouldn't have been torched like that regardless of being on their own island. As someone who played corner at the collegiate level (Div II only), Russell is a great athlete but he has zero technique and I don't think he has the "fluidness" in his hips to cover anyone comfortable this year. I know, I know, he'll improve. I just think that as a DB, Jalen Brown should've got the nod today.

Another thing people are going to hate me saying is, Zeke Motta is constantly out of position. Regardless of whether or not this was a coaching issue with special looks against the option. He is just too slow. He's a great kid but lets be honest, he wouldn't even see scout team reps on some of the teams we play against this year. This is my biggest issue. If you have good to great safety play, your corners mediocrity or inexperience can be disguised. Example: Florida Gators Joe Haden getting cooked against any decent WR but with Major Wright behind him, he suffered much less. If we can get a comfortable lead next week, Kelly needs to put in every younger DB on the roster to get reps. Maybe even start working Russell/Atkinson in for Motta and give Jalen the CB spot.

I think the play calling today was brilliant. I was sold on Chuck Martin being some Kelly controlled drone, but it's clear he has more control than what most people initially thought. I didn't like all the under center looks with EG initially, but then I remembered GVSU and their spread was very simple but the shotgun/undercenter looks changed weekly depending on opponents.

One play that stuck out to me was Golson's side line zip to Davaris Daniels. Ir reminded me of Clausens velocity and the speed of Vick's low shoulder very quick release.

A few more points about defense. I'm not sure if the 425 look was option O specific but I don't care for Ishaq in a stance. If you watch him come off the edge from a stance compared to a standing OLB look, you'll realize that that it was much harder to slow his speed rush down. Then again, it could've been a lot worse for Navy because he spent most of his day staying at home playing contain.

Teo looks like he's a bit faster than last year. Also if you followed along closely, Kona absolutely embarrassed some O-linemen today, Louis Nix as well.

Frankly, I think GA3 is one of the most elite athletes in the country. If he's behind Cierre Wood on the depth chart. Cierre must have really shown something. I love watching Theo too, his footwork and jukes remind me of a young Marshawn Lynch at Cal. Seemingly off balance yet somehow manages to stay up right. He definitely doesn't have that final gear that GA possesses though.

I loved the Toma call. The hard work and consistency he has put in for Notre Dame over the years, he deserved that call and that TD. I'm not sure what people were whining about. We're very fortunate we completed this game with a defense that still has their ACL's in tact. Navy has no shame in openly chop blocking and if it were up to me I would've aired it out every chance I got in the 4th quarter. Don't sleep on McDaniel either, weak Navy D or not. He's north and south and has a lot of power for someone of his size.

Justin Ferguson had a catch today, he's clearly physically ready for D1, but I would've liked to see Chris Brown. Something about that kid reminds me of a 17 year old Randy Moss without the attitude. Extremely fast, extreme vertical leap, and great body control when the ball is in the air.

Finally, can we filter out Mark May's name on here? I won't say that his other game analysis is inaccurate or bad, but since affirmative action allowed him to be the Lou Holtz anti-ND troll every week on national TV. He doesn't deserve any mention, including my own.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm still hyped up over how we looked today.

Go Irish

Can't help but feel that if (and I hate to say it) they still had Lynch, got Tee squared away as well as Darby on NSD the Irish would be playing for the BCS championship. I know the history of all these guys but those are the only two shortcomings on this team. (pass rush & cover corners) Otherwise like the squad Kelly has put together.

Lynch is an amazing pass rusher, an absolute animal, but he played with no discipline or self control.

Remember the practice videos last year when he was specifically told to stay at home in the 34 and allow our LB's to contain/pressure gaps.

He ignored everything and just ruthlessly rushed. Maybe I'll feel different when we struggle getting pressure on the better passing teams later on, but if you watched enough of Lynch last year, you'd realize his assigned gap was in constant jeopardy if the OLB dropped in coverage.

All true but we don't have them so don't spend energy on them.

Woooaaaah. Slow down. We wouldn't because we still have a schedule put together by bonobos. Also, there is still poor depth on the o-line and poor depth, experience, and talent at WR. And let's not forget, while Golson has amazing potential, he's a redshirt freshman. People need to slow down. Kelly has it going in the right direction big time, but first you have to beat up on teams like these every time, start blowing them out and getting guys reps and getting all the numbers that you need at every position with flexible athletes. Lots of Okwaras and Browns and Russells and ATkinsons. That's what ND needs. ND is still playing on low end sanctions in terms of numbers. Not good enough and that's what's going to take BK some time. That and getting the tempo going and getting the mentality right.
