So would you, as an educator, be more comfortable if they specifically said (in jargon): discuss Martin Luther King on/around MLK Jr. Day? How are these standards enforced anyway? Genuinely clueless on this stuff.

I get the concerns. Just trying to wrap my head around what all goes into it. Hopefully teachers voice concerns for feedback and get changes/clarification needed.

As an administrator, the problem lies in the current popular climate when it comes to, specifically, Social Studies standards. I would absolutely support my staff for going beyond the standards to include a discussion on the impact and importance of MLK…but there are those groups that would qualify this as implementing CRT.

If it’s in the standards, it offers some modicum of protection for teachers.

What @MacIrish75 said. Codifying it in the state standards stops local boards from caving to crazy parents saying teaching MLK Jr. to 3rd graders is reverse racism or something, and the board banning his "I Have a Dream" speech for example.

I looked again, either they updated it or I just used better search terms. So it specifically says for Kindergarten, "Students will apply history and skills to explain how communities honor . . . traditions and recognize officially designated holidays such as . . . Martin Luther King, Jr Day.

For first grade, it says the same, and "such as...Columbus Day (opportunity to say things good/bad about him).

For second grade it says the same, and "such as Juneteenth."
I quoted you above before I saw this post. I would venture a guess there could be updates being brought in, or it is intentionally being vague but mentioning these things like this to try to say, "see we said you could teach it."

But... IDK.

Since it appears the forgiveness plan is illegal, maybe he should work on a plan that minimizes the debt load up front. Put pressure on the schools and lenders. Reduce the interest rate on student loans to a percentage or two. Stop the interest clock when a deferment is requested.

LOL - My student loans were refi-ed at 1.25% under evil Bush. Those dirty Republicans had student loan rates so low well before the 10 year Treasury hit half a percent. These "educated" clowns are too dumb to realize how lower interest rates would be a better deal than a one time cash hand out. Then again, nobody gave Bush any credit then so just proof positive again that Republicans suck at winning.

You could also take over $20k/year in Stafford loans with tons of no interest while in school options, now only like $5k and starts accruing at 7 or 8 percent immediately. It is all private loans which want to hook parents on the guaranty as they are trying to head in to retirement.

Hang those guarantees on the colleges/universities and watch staffing migrate from "development" to career services.

Pelosi has decided not to run for leadership of the minority. Given her age and losing the gavel, I suspect she won't run for reelection either.

Good. Hopefully Feinstein retires while she can still remember she’s actually in the Senate.

Heard some crazy stat about the average age of those serving in the Senate. Kind of crazy that the entire government power structure is comprised largely of a bunch of geriatrics who probably think a soda still costs a nickel.

Average age is 64. I thought it would be worse. I think the outliers make it seem a lot worse than it is. We expect senators to be pretty accomplished people. Pretty tough to make a compelling case to the voters until you are on the tail end of your professional career. The House is where the young folks belong.

So a week after the election the FBI released some information regarding the Trump documents scandal. “Agents and prosecutors found no discernible business interest in the Mar-a-Lago documents.”

Federal agents and prosecutors have come to believe former president Donald Trump’s motive for allegedly taking and keeping classified documents was largely his ego and a desire to hold on to the materials as trophies or mementos, according to people familiar with the matter.

As part of the investigation, federal authorities reviewed the classified documents that were recovered from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home and private club, looking to see if the types of information contained in them pointed to any kind of pattern or similarities, according to these people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

That review has not found any apparent business advantage to the types of classified information in Trump’s possession, these people said. FBI interviews with witnesses so far, they said, also do not point to any nefarious effort by Trump to leverage, sell or use the government secrets. Instead, the former president seemed motivated by a more basic desire not to give up what he believed was his property, these people said.

The article goes on to mention that, motive aside, he can still be charged with crimes of course. The only mention of nuclear secrets was a reference to the same WaPo article from 3 months ago that cited an "anonymous source." No other publication has confirmed that one still, only references back to the original WaPo story. Someone at the DOJ likely leaked to WaPo suggestions that "nuclear secrets" were part of the raid, but at this point if the documents contain no business interest then it's unlikely there was dangerous material involved and this amounts to a kerfuffle or political op over mostly meaningless documents.

You mean he wasn't stealing US nuclear secrets and selling them to the highest bidder?

Student Loan Defaults Will Increase ‘Historically’ Without Debt Forgiveness, Biden Administration Says

nice.gif

When they announced the $10k forgiveness program, my initial thought was that the underlying reason they rolled the program out was to benefit the creditors. No doubt it would certainly help some people but it's scraps off the table and a trade-off creditors would gleefully make to encourage/incentivize the plebs to start paying again in January.

Don't care for Boebert personally, but a lot of people were calling this one early and there will be tears.

The very people who idolize Biden, AOC, Pelosi, Crazy Aunt Maxine, and so on criticizing anyone else in politics is funny. Their blind spot is the size of the Pacific.
Are you trying to tell me that there is anyone more unqualified to be in Congress than Lauren Boebert?

To be fair the democrats have a few that might qualify for the “Make a Wish” foundation. And I’m not even joking starting with the President and trickling down to Fetterman.
