Very predictable that the left-wing media outlets (Meidas Touch, Lincoln Project, Patriot Takes, MSNBC, The View, etc.) and personalities who said Trump was the worst person to ever live and that he is the biggest threat to democracy are essentially rooting for him to win the nomination and making DeSantis out to be worse than him.

They don't believe it. They're only saying that in an attempt to engineer the GOP Primary so that Republican voters pick the much weaker candidate. It's not about democracy, it's about them winning, and in the case of the Lincoln Project, to keep the grift going as well. If it was about democracy they'd all be boosting potential GOP challengers in the primary and would've called out Democratic groups who worked overtime to ensure that crackpot election deniers won GOP primaries.

What are you talking about?

I lived in Florida when he ran in 2018. I'm aware of the campaign he ran. We made jokes about it being cringey at work. Congrats on being four years behind I guess? What do you want people to admit?

If he gets the nomination in 2024, some very corny campaign ads from 2018 won't save you. He isn't some little known Representative anymore. He's the governor of the 3rd largest state in the union and has a record as an executive.

The fight to control the House is essentially over. Many news sources have called a few more races and Republicans now hold a 217-205 lead, needing to pick up only 1 more of the 13 undecided seats to gain control of the House of Representatives.
Doing a quick check on CNN, Alaska should go red and there are several seats in Cali that will go red.

So if you're in politics, you're not allowed to change your mind or position? Good to know.

Cack, you're yelling at strangers on a football forum about politics. Might wanna think about a timeout or a therapist. @GoIrish41 did that for a year after Trump won in 2016. He probably has some recommendations for you.

Can't have a viable 3rd party until RCV is widespread. Hopefully Trump splitting the GOP in 2024 might be the push everyone needs to get it implemented.

Most of the focus has been on DeSantis running for president, but after hearing snippets from Pence's discussion on CNN, it sounds like he is going to run IMO. He was tap dancing around the question, but he didn't say he wouldn't run. He also didn't say it, but he implied that he wouldn't support Trump.

I think several of them will dip their toes in the water. I hope they all have a gentleman's agreement of sorts to coalesce around one or two options early if The Don is still around though.

My assumption is if you take Dr. King out of social studies, you'd better be in school on his birthday.

This is exactly what the CRT fearing suburban white ladies put him in office to do. He ran on this and he's delivering. I'll give him that.

As a Social Studies teacher:

1. Lynching not taught until 6th grade: That's fair
2. Columbus' role in slavery not taught until 11th: Nah... that can be told earlier. Kids spend too much time here in PA not knowing his role, it needs to be taught sooner.
3. No mention of MLK Jr. in elementary school: No, you can talk to kids about why we have a holiday for the man, his importance, and more. That's bad.
4. Juneteenth not being mentioned: It's now a federal holiday, and part of the end of the Civil War. It can be taught to kids. No reasons to leave it out.
5. No LGBTQ+: I mean... I get it. I do. But at the same time, I think understanding people in our world, state, community is an important part of Social Studies.

I'm scanning through the specifics in the draft for things touching on some of these topics.

Looks like a big civil rights section in sixth grade. To me, that is still elementary school. Others call it middle school. To each their own. I don't think there is any sort of ban on bringing up MLK Jr. though? Not sure how these things work. I think we used to do little day or two things for different big events/holidays? Is that still a thing?

Juneteenth seems to fall under: "describe the effects of war from the various perspectives of . . . enslaved african americans." Would you feel like that provides enough leeway to discuss that topic?

Removal of MLK Jr. from the standards for K-5 is pretty substantial to me. Means they are taking away the need to go over his contributions in those grades. Again, you may be right that there will still be special times around the holiday where he is talked about, and discussed, but removed from standards means he could be excluded entirely.

Juneteenth is an interesting one as you mentioned. Could definitely be part of the topic based on what was said as you quote. However, I, again, feel like it also provides the school boards, state, etc. the leeway to ensure that it isn't talked about too you know?

So would you, as an educator, be more comfortable if they specifically said (in jargon): discuss Martin Luther King on/around MLK Jr. Day? How are these standards enforced anyway? Genuinely clueless on this stuff.

I get the concerns. Just trying to wrap my head around what all goes into it. Hopefully teachers voice concerns for feedback and get changes/clarification needed.

As an administrator, the problem lies in the current popular climate when it comes to, specifically, Social Studies standards. I would absolutely support my staff for going beyond the standards to include a discussion on the impact and importance of MLK…but there are those groups that would qualify this as implementing CRT.

If it’s in the standards, it offers some modicum of protection for teachers.

I looked again, either they updated it or I just used better search terms. So it specifically says for Kindergarten, "Students will apply history and skills to explain how communities honor . . . traditions and recognize officially designated holidays such as . . . Martin Luther King, Jr Day.

For first grade, it says the same, and "such as...Columbus Day (opportunity to say things good/bad about him).

For second grade it says the same, and "such as Juneteenth."
