Texas Oversigning - Recruiting Vertigo
Texas Oversigning - Recruiting Vertigo
The recruiting refrain from Longhorn fans was "tag 'em and bag 'em" with recruiting usually almost over by early summer. Seventeen of the eventual twenty-three in the Class of 2014 were "bagged" before the season began. With that class the Longhorns would be over eighty-five, but Strong accepted six more after he was hired in January. Five of the six were three star recruits none of whom were early entrants.
After Signing Day, Texas was oversigned by eleven! The roster was top heavy with seniors and juniors. The class of 2013 (sophs) was only fifteen enrollees. By the beginning of fall camp, fourteen players were no longer on the roster, reducing the roster from ninety-six to eighty-two.
--In January, one decided to graduate, two more who were out in 2013 were given medical scholarships.
--In March, another was given a medical scholarship and two were dismissed.
--July brought another dismissal and a 2014 signee with an injury during his senior season was given a medical scholarship.
--In August, just before fall camp, three players were released, another given a medical scholarship (concussions) and two more who had been arrested were removed from the program. Strong also noted that three other players were being disciplined one games for violation of team rules.
Total - five medical scholarships, one to graduation, five dismissals and three released (or "cut").
Class of 2015
Counting backwards - All three of the early enrollees from 2014 can be counted backwards, leaving twenty counting for the class of 2014. Five of the six early enrollee can count towards 2014. At this point, their class of 2015 has twenty-three verbals/enrollees. Subtracting the five counted towards the 2014 class leaves eighteen (plus one greyshirt) for 2015.
Starting with eighty-two at the beginning of fall camp, Texas lost another four after the season started - a transfer, a retirement from football and two dismissals, leaving seventy-eight. Twenty seniors graduated and one player is an early entrant to the NFL draft, reducing the roster to fifty-seven.
Without further attrition, the Class of 2015 could be twenty-eight (five of which are counted backwards), which would be eighty-five. It could even be as large as thirty (five counting towards 2014), but would need attrition in the current roster to get to eighty-five.
The 2015 class has seen a lot of changes with eight decommits only one of which has recommitted. Four of those seven probably were seeing the writing on the wall, but three were counted on.
Texas could close strong. Either Kai Locksley or Kyle Murray may replace Zach Gentry at QB. Sosa Jamabo has them in his top two. Daylon Mack (DT) has them in his favorites. They are also pursuing another WR, one or two CBs, and two Athletes who are making Official Visits these last few weeks.
With a 2015 class of twenty-eight added to the 2014 class of twenty-three, fifty-one of their roster would be in these two classes. Eleven current players will be Seniors in 2015.
