And iirc Tennessee had an absolutely silly number of signees last year in the 30+ range.

31 signees according to rivals in the 2014 class for the Vols.

Pretty sure they had 10 EEs counting against 2013 last year too. I think they actually had 32.
They have been big on JCs the last several years so you probably have 4+ aging off early year over year as well.

Not necessarily. Depends on how many spots they have left from last year's class. EE's don't automatically count towards the previous year's class. You can only count them towards the previous year's class if you have scholarships left over from last year. Otherwise, they count towards your current class.

should have used italics instead of lol....

Tennessee's Class of 2011 was 26 (25 scholarship with one greyshirt) could not have counted any backwards to their Class of 2010 (32 signees, 27 enrolled - no early enrollees).

The first class that could have subsequent classes count backwards was the 2012 class of twenty-one. Four of their five early enrollees from the 2013 class of twenty-two counted towards the 2012 class, leaving eighteen for 2013.

Seven of the fourteen early enrollees (out of a class of the 2014 class of thirty-two) counted back to 2013. That left a full twenty-five for 2014.

None of the 2015 class - despite having ten early enrollees - can count backwards to 2014.

So, with twenty-eight verbals/early enrollees, this class will see some shrinkage out of the remaining eighteen verbals and need to be at twenty-five. Getting to eighty-five is another matter.

The main thing to me is that Alabama continues to recruit despite being over --- can you say "don't give a damn"?

Yes, and no. They had a ton of EEs last year and if they counted to the year before, they can count some of their 8 EEs this year to last year. I think the 85 man limit (kicking players of the team, medical hardships when they aren't really hurt that bad, and encouraging kids to transfer) is where they really abuse the system, not so much the 25 per year.

Texas Oversigning - Recruiting Vertigo

Texas Oversigning - Recruiting Vertigo

The recruiting refrain from Longhorn fans was "tag 'em and bag 'em" with recruiting usually almost over by early summer. Seventeen of the eventual twenty-three in the Class of 2014 were "bagged" before the season began. With that class the Longhorns would be over eighty-five, but Strong accepted six more after he was hired in January. Five of the six were three star recruits none of whom were early entrants.

After Signing Day, Texas was oversigned by eleven! The roster was top heavy with seniors and juniors. The class of 2013 (sophs) was only fifteen enrollees. By the beginning of fall camp, fourteen players were no longer on the roster, reducing the roster from ninety-six to eighty-two.

--In January, one decided to graduate, two more who were out in 2013 were given medical scholarships.
--In March, another was given a medical scholarship and two were dismissed.
--July brought another dismissal and a 2014 signee with an injury during his senior season was given a medical scholarship.
--In August, just before fall camp, three players were released, another given a medical scholarship (concussions) and two more who had been arrested were removed from the program. Strong also noted that three other players were being disciplined one games for violation of team rules.

Total - five medical scholarships, one to graduation, five dismissals and three released (or "cut").

Class of 2015
Counting backwards - All three of the early enrollees from 2014 can be counted backwards, leaving twenty counting for the class of 2014. Five of the six early enrollee can count towards 2014. At this point, their class of 2015 has twenty-three verbals/enrollees. Subtracting the five counted towards the 2014 class leaves eighteen (plus one greyshirt) for 2015.

Starting with eighty-two at the beginning of fall camp, Texas lost another four after the season started - a transfer, a retirement from football and two dismissals, leaving seventy-eight. Twenty seniors graduated and one player is an early entrant to the NFL draft, reducing the roster to fifty-seven.

Without further attrition, the Class of 2015 could be twenty-eight (five of which are counted backwards), which would be eighty-five. It could even be as large as thirty (five counting towards 2014), but would need attrition in the current roster to get to eighty-five.

The 2015 class has seen a lot of changes with eight decommits only one of which has recommitted. Four of those seven probably were seeing the writing on the wall, but three were counted on.

Texas could close strong. Either Kai Locksley or Kyle Murray may replace Zach Gentry at QB. Sosa Jamabo has them in his top two. Daylon Mack (DT) has them in his favorites. They are also pursuing another WR, one or two CBs, and two Athletes who are making Official Visits these last few weeks.

With a 2015 class of twenty-eight added to the 2014 class of twenty-three, fifty-one of their roster would be in these two classes. Eleven current players will be Seniors in 2015.

It doesn't come as a huge surprise, as the former four-star recruit in Alabama's 2013 class hasn't received a lot of playing time with the Tide, and he was becoming a bit buried on the depth chart.

In his two seasons at Alabama, Liner appeared in only four games, making three tackles.

Alabama has asked Hoover defensive end Christian Bell to grayshirt | AL.com

By Jeff Sentell
on February 02, 2015 at 10:09 PM, updated February 02, 2015 at 11:51 PM

Hoover senior defensive end Christian Bell committed to play football at Alabama in late April of 2014, but will not sign his national letter-of-intent on National Signing Day on Wednesday.

Bell told AL.com on Monday he has accepted a grayshirt to still continue his career in Tuscaloosa. He will enroll in January and be a part of the scholarship count for the Class of 2016.

...

Bell said the Alabama coaching staff asked him to grayshirt last Monday. He thought it over and wanted to continue to pursue his dream of playing college football at Alabama.

...

He mentioned a couple of reasons why Alabama asked him to grayshirt, but chose not to go into great detail.

"It pertains to me working on my physical development and also working on my academics," he said.

Bell declined comment on whether or not he was qualified to receive a scholarship at this time.

You would hope that his one year (renewable) scholarship would be effective through the spring semester so that the young man can pursue his academic dreams.

"Released" or "cut" whatever.

An Alabama boy who chose Alabama over Auburn. They had two Sr DTs last year and play a 4-3 instead. Maybe he heads there. He'd be non-scholarship in '15. They have two DT commits (one a JUCO-Maurice Swain, one a freshman to be-Jauntavius Johnson) in the Class of 2015.

Now, Bama just needs 3 or 4 guys to be dismissed for violations of team rules, and they'll be close to the limit!

Louisville Pulls Scholarship Offer To Mr. Football

(WLTX) ---- Two days before National Signing Day and the state's reigning Mr. Football is in limbo.

Running back Matt Colburn committed to Louisville back in June and never wavered in his decision. However, Monday morning, Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham called Dutch Fork head coach Tom Knotts to tell him the Cardinals were pulling their scholarship offer to Colburn and suggest Colburn come to Louisville as a grayshirt.

If Colburn were to take the grayshirt offer, he would not arrive on campus until January.

Needless to say, Knotts and the Dutch Fork coaching staff are none too pleased. Knotts has told the South Carolina Network Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino will not be permitted to recruit any Dutch Fork athletes.

In the meantime, Knotts is scrambling to find a place for the Shrine Bowl offensive MVP who until Monday was all set and looked at Wednesday as a day when the next chapter of his athletic career would officially begin.

instead, Colburn is in scramble mode as to where he will be attending college. That wasn't the case when he walked off the campus Friday heading into the weekend.

Alabama Numbers

Alabama Numbers

With Christian Bell presumably accepting a greyshirt, the '15 class is down to twenty-two and, by my count, this would leave Alabama at eighty-seven scholarship players. That counts the scholarship given to walk-on Parker Barrineau and Dee Liner being released.

At twenty-two, Alabama has room for two (possibly three) more scholarships for this class without any of their verbals defecting. Bama has been targeting a WR and a OT. At OT, Isaiah Prince, who committed and then decommitted, is their lone target. At WR, either Daylon Charlot or K.J. Hill are possible. Charlot, a Louisiana residence, committed and decommitted. Hill, a Arkansas resident, decommitted from Arkansas and visited Alabama. (Out of all their remaining targets and offers, predictions are that only Charlot will sign to Bama.)

Last year two players who ending up enrolling last year were possible academic casualities. Johnny Dwight, DT, got a qualifying waiver. O.J. Smith was looking around before signing day, possibly due to grades, but then got his full offer. Smith suffered a season-ending injury in August. Academics or medical issues might come into play. With two more 2015 commits, the Tide would be at eighty-nine total.

Clemson Commits and Greyshirting

Clemson Commits and Greyshirting

Clemson has twenty-two commits for the Class of 2015.

Their class has remained almost the same since before the 2014 season began when they had twenty-two commits. Tigers may be done, already, with 2015 recruiting

The only changes from August were when one did not qualify (a WR) and one decommitted (a CB). Clemson replaced them with a DT and another CB.

Although the class is twenty-two according to the recruiting services, they also are honoring scholarships to three greyshirts from 2014, leaving them with twenty-five.

Clemson has one greyshirt in 2015 for 2016.

Of course, this is not oversigning, but due to the greyshirting discussion I placed it here. Many greyshirts do not end up with scholarships, unlike at Clemson.

Like many other coaches, Dabo Swinney has a policy that if a recruit visits another school after they have committed, they may lose their scholarship. Reports are that two commits - Deon Cain and Ray Ray McCloud - quietly visited Auburn over last weekend.

We'll have to see if they end up signing with Clemson or if their scholarship offers are withdrawn.

Bama just compiles video game classes.. Only Kiffin can lose with all that talent.

I wish it was that simple. You certainly up your chances by signing more top recruits, but recruiting is still a crap shoot on any given player.

Some Oversigning Numbers

Some Oversigning Numbers

By my count....

Ohio State (27 Signees) - 91 Scholarships
Mississippi State (28 Signees) - 90 Scholarships

Alabama (23 Signees + 1 Greyshirt) - 87 Scholarships
Tennessee (27 Signees +2 Blueshirts '15) - 87 Scholarships (includes 1 w/o scholarship)
South Carolina (29 Signees +1 Committed, not signed) - 86 Scholarships (includes 2 w/o scholarships)

Others:
Georgia (28 Signees) - 85 Scholarships
Texas (29 Signees) - 84 Scholarships (includes 1 w/o scholarship)

Notre Dame (24 Signees) - 80 Scholarships
USC (24 Signees + 2 Committed, not signed) - 79 Scholarships (includes two w/o scholarships and 1 2014 Blueshirt scholarship for 2015)

I don't have total scholarship numbers for:

Auburn (27 Signees) - some reports had them at 85 with 27 signees
Ga Tech (27 Signees) - previous three classes totaled 53 (17+14+22)

The walkon scholarship count is for players who received a scholarship in 2014 and still have eligibility for 2015. Whether those are renewed is to be determined.

Urban Meyer: "I've never really oversigned, We don't go two over, three over."

The day before signing day Ohio State was very actively pursuing four additional players to their class of twenty-five verbal commits. Two of those signed wtih Ohio State, leaving them with ninety-one scholarship players. The other two, who had taken Official Visits the last two weekends in January, would have made ninety-three.

Ohio State has enough attrition, interest in transfers, or players in the bullseye of losing their scholarships that they could have signed twenty-nine?

Or would some of the Class of '15 have had to take grayshirts?

Just saw on Twitter (Bruce Feldman) that Saban just dismissed one of his "student athletes" indefinetly. His foresight is better than my hindsight.

https://twitter.com/brucefeldmancfb/status/565280435492909056

The comments are classic. Worth the read.

You do realize that Jones was probably going to see significant playing time this season? That leaves Bama with Henry, Drake coming off a major injury, and two RBs in Bo and D. Harris that haven't taken the first carry in college. If Saban needed to get rid of a player to make his number, he sure could have picked another position to do it.

Jones has been in the Saban doghouse off and on since arriving in T Town. This is his second suspension so he deserves whatever he gets. Hope he figures things out... he has too much talent to piss it away.

Isn't it a bit strange that nearly every offseason, it seems like there is somebody new in Saban's doghouse, conveniently around the time when numbers need to work?

Dutch Fork Star Picks Wake Forest

Richland County, SC (WLTX) - Dutck Fork High School football star Matt Colburn said Wednesday he'll play college football at Wake Forest, nearly two weeks after he was spurned by Louisville.

Colburn made the decision at Dutch Fork High flanked by family and friends. He chose the Demon Deacons over Georgia Southern, Marshall, and Furman.

Colburn is the current winner of the South Carolina's "Mr. Football," award, given to the top prep football player in the state. Since last June, he'd been committed to play at Louisville for Coach Bobby Petrino. But on February 2nd, just two days before National Signing Day, the school pulled their scholarship offer. With no agreement in hand, Colburn's football fate was up in the air.
