Oscar-worthy performances that got snubbed

I figured there's plenty of material for a thread like this. What are some film performances that you think were pretty damn good that didn't get Academy recognition? Here's a few of mine to get things rolling:

Alan Rickman "Die Hard" It's hard for action movies to get any love, so it's easy to see why Rickman's performance got written off as just another suavely evil villain in the style of the Bond franchise. But Rickman did something special, creating a character so memorable and unique that it set the gold standard for action movie villains for the next quarter century as well as eclipsing all his cinematic predecessors. Rickman's Hans Gruber conveyed evil without being cartoonishly sadistic, and was believable as being both a wordly bon vivant and a vicious criminal. You enjoyed watching him work while he was alive but you were also happy that he got his comeuppance in the end.

Val Kilmer "Tombstone" Kilmer's Doc Holliday may have seemed too broadly drawn and comically droll but he only committed the sin that offends the Academy; he was too entertaining. The Oscar people like their performances to fall into serious actor vein, all moody pathos and mumbly rage. But Kilmer's performance as Holliday had what any actor would kill for; a charismatic magnetism that had your full attention in whatever scene he was in. And whenever he was gone you couldn't wait for him to come back, whether it was to spout off clever repartee or fill bad guys with lead, or both.

The guy who played the priest in the Excorcist 3 who was locked up in a straight jacket. That movie still gives me the straight up shivers.

I'm still at a loss that Don Knotts didn't get anything for "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken"!

He was an unsung celluloid hero*. On "Three's Company" Norman Fell couldn't hold a candle to him and John Ritter was a drag on his genius.

Andre the Giant in "The Princess Bride".
One of the most brilliant performances I've ever seen.

Marilyn Chambers in "Behind the Green Door".
I like boobies.

tom hanks in cast away over russel crowe in gladiator.

and on the alan rickman front--im not sure its oscar worthy but he steals every single scene in robin hood-prince of theives. just re-watched this a few weeks ago. he's so funny and has a one liner to exit every scene. fantastic.

Meryl Streep in the "Iron Lady" over Rooney Mara in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", and every film that lost out to "The Artist".

agree 100%. meryl streep is super talented. i love her. but, the level of performance by rooney in tgwtdt is up there with any winning performance over the past 20 years...hands down.

i'd also contend that as far as best actress--1995 is the closest race and couldve went to any of the 5.

susan surandon for dead man walking won over:
elisabeth shue in leaving las vegas (which is amazing [about the only nic cage movie worth two $#!/'s]).
Sharon stone in casino
meryl streep in bridges of madison county
emma thompson in sense and sensibility.

Just remember tragedy is easy, but comedy is hard. I liked how she was obnoxious, funny, and sexy all within a single scene. Maybe she shouldn't have won, but people give her way too much grief.

Al Pacino in "Donnie Brasco." Everyone had been scoffing at Pacino's bellowing performances of late and then he comes up with this understated gem. He's part Goodfella and part Willy Loman.

1997 was one of the low points of the Oscars, when good movies like "L.A. Confidential" and "Donnie Brasco" got steamrolled by the twin titans of cinematic crap; "Titanic" and "Good Will Hunting."

How about Morgan Freeman or Tim Robbins for Shawshank Redemption? I love Forrest Gump, too, but Morgan Freeman in Shawshank was absolutely amazing.

Sorry but I don't know if I've ever seen a better acting job than Tom Hanks did in Forrest Gump.

Blasphemy!

KickAss was AWESOME!
:)

Cage gave the best Batman performance ever without even playing the character.

Speaking of Shawshank...it was highway robbery that Shawshank didn't come away with Best Picture.

Really?
I like Tom Hanks, but...

Imo, off the top of my head, better performances then Hanks in Gump:

Daniel Day-Lewis-everything he's ever starred in
Russell Crowe-Master and Commander
Philip Seymour Hoffman-Boogienights
John Goodman-The Big Lebowski
Ralph Fiennes-Schindler's List
Al Pacino – Scent Of A Woman
Joe Pesci-Goodfellas

Not in terms of an actor in general, I just think that one performance was better then Gump.

It's pretty crazy to think that Shawshank, the #1 highest rated film of all time on IMDB, didn't win a single Oscar. 7 nominations, 0 wins.

Also, Forrest Gump beat out Pulp Fiction for best picture in addition to Shawshank. The f*ck?

I guess 1995 was a pretty loaded year. Any of those films sure as heck would've beaten out The Artist.

God he was so good in that movie. One of those performances where the actor totally captures your attention every moment he is on screen.

I think the problem was that it was a borderline supporting role, and he was nominated for Best Actor. He definitely should have been nominated and won for Best Supporting Actor.

agree with almost all of these previous posts, except for tom hanks as gump being the single greatest performance ever. its pretty steller. i would say his performance in cast away was better and he was robbed by russel crowe. i hate gladiator. i think its one of the biggest pieces of trash, next to avatar. and maybe titanic.
LAX--1994 was ridiculous for good films. part of that was an influx of the gen x indie guys getting studio pictures. but, also, screenwriting was just really solid through the 90's. because of that indie movement that happened.
