I hope they burn the same as any other cheating team. They are clearly dirty between this, the Will Lyles saga, etc. In fact I get the feeling that we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg with Oregon.

^Agree...I have a feeling there could be an OSU type fallout there.

ESPN is just saying it was a rental car, no mention that it was potentially paid for by a university employee.

Ruh roh, Reorge.

It truly is amazing to me that the only way anybody can ever get caught breaking the rules is to do the most absurdly stupid sh!t imaginable. What are the chances that this is the one and only kid that got a rental car in this manner, and this is the one and only time he did so, and he just happened to drive like a sociopath? Not buying. You can say the same thing about the Ohio State thing. If the guy the players were dealing with didn't happen to be an all-american narcotics trafficker then the whole business would never have seen the light of day; and if the attorney who tipped Tressel off to the whole thing had just told him he needed to speak with him face-to-face rather than e-mail him using both of their work e-mails then Tressel would still be assumed to be squeaky clean. Instead they left an electronic/paper trail and now that program is staring down the barrel of the executioner's gun.

Idiots, all of them. They deserve whatever happens to them, and probably worse.

OK...ok...looks like smoke...agree.

Question. Do university employees generally understand the rules as relates to scholarship athletes? No not administrative staff...but just common operations and faculty people...I could see scenarios where this could be an unfortunate, but honest mistake by the employee...but not the ball player.

While I normally agree with you, let's be honest here.....He rented it FOR the guy. Otherwise, the player would've just rented his own car. He probably didn't have the money or wasn't of age.

Harris is under 25 with a suspended license and was driving the car uninsured.. b/c I'm assuming this woman did not put him on as an additional driver.
The timimg of this couldn't be worse for Oregon, but this alone won't be a huge deal. The question is does this open the doors for a potential sky falling?

..I must concede it isn't very likely in this case...as more info comes out...

However I arrived at this thought process because in my early days I had a professor who would routinely let students take his truck to move things to and fro around campus, and even to and fro between school and home...I seriously doubt if he ever took note of who asked...I think the guy would have rented a car for someone had they had a need.

different world now...clearly

Too funny.

And in all seriousness, I don't think this is small potatoes. Years ago Syracuse had to vacate a lacrosse season (including national championship) because a coach co-signed a car loan for a player. Didn't make any payments, just co-signed it because the player had no credit at that point.

I don't see how an employee renting a car for a kid is very much different. I would expect some bad stuff to come from this.

The woman, who describes herself as a friend of Harris over the past few months, said she was unaware Cliff would be driving and also said she has proof that the amount she paid for the rental car matches two separte deposits she made into her bank account Friday.

"I do have a copy of my bank statement, showing two deposits Friday of $180 and $120."

According to Hertz Vehicle Control, the Nissan Altima was rented Friday, June 10th and returned after business hours Sunday, June 12th at 10:44 p.m..

Since when does a Nissan Altima cost $100/day, to rent?

Why do those deposits matter? I'm quite confused.

Cheating should be punished wherever and whenever is occurs, but it'll be a shame if Oregon is the next domino to fall.

There are so many other schools where cheating has been institutionalized for years; Oregon's success is a new thing, so they were either bad at cheating before or this is a recent development.

The employee who rented the car stated that Harris had paid her for the use of the car, probably in an effort to make it seem like no one was paying for benefits. The deposits are supposed to be the money that Harris and/or his friends paid?

Or it has been going on, just like we recently found out at Ohio State, for years, but no one cared until now.

Possible. Why cheat when you're not very good? If you don't have a shot at a national/ conference title, it seems like a stupid risk to take.

Because it's the best way to get good. Or, for coaches, the best way to have flash-in-the-pan success and move on up to a better gig. See: Jim Tressel at Youngstown State.
