Hey Notre Dame, you're not supposed to lose your top coaches to other jobs until you've actually won something as a program.....

Was thinking the same thing. Apparently beating LSU in the Citrus Bowl was the pinnacle. Goodness gracious.

Hey, good news, we have this awesome OL haul for 19' lined up.

There seems to be an assumption that Notre Dame should do everything to keep Hiestand. Maybe they tried. There’s two parts here with the other being Hiestand himself. Perhaps, he just wants to go back to the NFL. He’s 59, maybe he’s tired of recruiting. Maybe he wants one final crack at the NFL before retiring. I don’t know.

Sometimes there’s nothing you can do, everybody has their reasons.

Both are detrimental, but Elko was a bigger loss than Harry.

Well I guess Alabama isn't elite then

Was JUST going to say this.... Pretty sure Bama is the definition of Elite these days. They have been plucked of several OC's and DC's lately.

In addition, and on a slightly different level, it happens to the NE Patriots as well.

However, yes... this "usually happens" after Championships are won (and I don't mean Citrus Bowl Championships)

Did one of 'Bama's most important coordinators/ position coaches make a horizontal move recently?

ah,.... no?

Harry at least didn't make a horizontal move like Elko did, but I don't get the impression the 'Bamas and OSUs of the world are regularly losing their most important coaches at crucial junctions for the program. Their most successful guys get promoted to coordinator and HC positions at other schools after winning a title.

We just finally managed to string together a pair of 10 win seasons within a 3 year window for the first time since 1993. Not remotely similar.

Getting Lea mitigates the loss of Elko considerably. Scheme continuity, etc.

But, just because Harry wasn't a flashy recruiter doesn't mean he was a slouch. Just a man of few words. His coaching is what will be missed most.

I get that they usually move to bigger positions but elite programs def don't hold onto their best coaches until they retire or or fired... ND was't like that as an elite program either as memory serves.

Aside from that one side point we basically agree?? ND should not be losing their top assistants to other jobs, especially as they haven't really won a damned thing, which is usually when assistants from 'top programs' start to move on... frustrating.

Yes, we agree. I forgot to add the "horizontal" qualifier in the original post you responded to. Programs that are serious about competing for championships find ways to retain their key coaches prior to making a big jump. Those guys invariably leave for better jobs at other programs eventually; but if you start losing your best coaches before making that jump...

That's a big reason 2nd tier programs have trouble breaking through and consistently challenging elite programs on the field. And it's looking more and more like that's who we are now.

I went to bed happy last night with all those threads indicating hires. Nothing to look forward to except finishing the recruiting cycle well. Then this, and that queasy feeling starts again. Going off to watch Arsenal now, which is just as depressing.

As someone who revoked my Bears fandom in last year's NFL draft - I now hate them almost as much as the Packers. F those guys.

Heistand's recruiting prowess was cranking out NFL O-linemen - that sells itself. If someone needs to be stroked off on text messages by an old man Harry wasn't going to be their cup of tea anyways.

What about Iowa's OL coach? They seem to polish some gems out of nowhere. NVM Ferentz son (now OC) prior to the guy there now that took over in 2016.

Am I bummed about losing Harry? F yes I am.. He was an amazing coach.

But the world is not burning down.. ND will hire someone and they will keep rolling out the pigskin on Saturdays in the fall..

It's going to be ok.. Let's see who Kelly goes with
