1) Andy Heck - OL Coach KC Chiefs - ND Alum and very good OL in NFL, but how is he supposed to leave an NFL job for the same job?
2) Rick Trickett - Free Agent - Highly doubt he leaves Florida for anything other than a trip to see grandchildren or something like. Would be surprised if he didn't retire.
3) Tom Cable - Free Agent - Don't know if he would jump down to the college level after 12 years in the NFL
4) Chris Foerster - Free Agent - As long as the snow remains on the ground in South Bend and not on his desk then he's a very good OL coach lol
5) Garin Justice - OL Coach Arizona - Maybe we can swoop in and steal him while Arizona is finding a new coach. He did a great job at FAU and is only 34
6) Greg Austin - OL Coach Nebraska - Don't know why he's brought up as a target because he just signed with his alma mater to be OL Coach and is making almost $500K a year
7) Herb Hand - OL Coach Auburn - Just signed an extension at Auburn. Good recruiter, had terrible OL's at Penn State, has been good at Auburn.
8) Ryan Silverfield - OL Coach Memphis - Improved his OL from 95th in the country to 54th in his 2nd year (According to FootballOutsiders.com). Worked with Chip Long for one season
9) John Peterson - OL Coach Pittsburgh - Solid recruiter for an average offensive line. Wouldn't be a very exciting hire.
10) Justin Frye - OL Coach Boston College - Got Finn Dirstine to go to BC which is big cause I think Finn should be at ND. Also, don't know why he's so revered because he had the 27th ranked OL this season which is good but the two seasons before that...127/128 & 128/128 (According to FootballOutsiders.com).

I think there's a positive and negative to just about every candidate on the board. I think Andy Heck would be an absolute dynamite hire, but Kelly better bring his recruiting hat and wallet to Kansas City cause this guy has a job for a playoff NFL team.

Maybe we can get a two for one deal with his chicky. She can be our on campus hospitality director. What could go wrong?

I would love it if ND landed andy heck, specially if he could bring back a joe moore style OL.

But why would Heck leave? I get that he's an alum, but he's got a good thing going for him in KC.

I have no clue who this guy is, but he has over 7,000 followers. I found a fair number of articles where Heck is starting to catch some heat and his seat may be getting a little warm.

Fair. Heck would be about as good of a hire as ND could pull since Crus isn't dropping bags for the Irish

Maybe because he's done the NFL thing and may look at this as another chapter in his life.

Maybe he would see teaching and molding young players as more of an opportunity over fine tuning NFL players.

Maybe he sees this as a way to help his alma mater get a NC.

Just spitballin' a few whys.

Can't imagine someone willingly giving up an NFL gig for the grind of the college game, unless a) it was a step up in position (i.e. coordinator to HC) or b) he's being run out of the league. Regardless of where he went to college...

I always get confused on the value of position coaches at P5 level or NFL level.

Position coaches are like city buses....they come and go with regularity.

To me, the coordinators are who are the value players...and that is the Offense, Defense, Special Teams and Strength and Conditioning coordinators.

Having been a position coach at the college level (not P5) I can say with certainty that it is the talent level of players themselves that will dictate how well a position coach looks. Meaning...........give any position coach in the SEC, U of Kansas level talent, they are going to look awful.

You give any position coach at the P5 level BAMA talent, they are going to shine.

The idea that a position coach turns a wannabe into a all American is a myth. Saying that HH turned Zach Martin into a star is an example of that myth. Martin was an extremely strong, athletic Lineman with a endless competitive streak. That is all on Martin....NOT HH. As an example, he continues to improve in the NFL, years removed from HH.

The one thing that HH did bring to the table was recruiting. He did help bring in very good recruits. But if you read the article from Q's father, it was BK more than HH that got Q back for this season.

So the most important trait for a position coach at this level is energy in both practice and recruiting. The old saying in coaching is...you want to be a good coach, recruit good players......if you want to be a great coach ,recruit great players. This is the Bama/OSU model. Saban and Meyer are considered great, because they continually recruit great players.

It is easy to be considered a Great or a Bad position coach if you have Great or Bad talent level.

You can't make Chicken Salad out of Chicken Sh1t.

Losing HH will only hurt ND, if they get a replacement who is not committed to recruiting the 4 star and above level talent. If they can find a dynamic energetic coach who can connect and bond with the current group and the next few recruiting classes, they are good.

Clemson is a good comp for A&M. A longtime contender/wannabe-elite that struck gold with the right coach. There are, of course, a lot of programs in that position who didn't hire the right coach and just kept drifting along at 8-4.

Is Jimbo that right coach to get A&M to the next level? Or did he peak at FSU a few years back? We'll see. But with that contract and expectations, I'd wager it's just as likely Jimbo's walking the plank in 2021 as it is he's winning the SEC.

Agree 100%. Not sure Jimbo is a rock star, but he's been as good or better than BK since taking over FSU. I'll give him some slack on 2017 as I think they were way over ranked to begin with. Loosing Cook and their top 4 WRs alone would set any O back. Their OL was not that good to begin with and they lost their best piece in the draft. No way they should have been pre season top 5 IMO. Then lose your starting QB in the first game, and boom. The roster overall was crazy young to start with, and I'd be surprised if they had more than one go in the first two rounds. Even so, their worst loss was to BC which was a pretty solid team despite their record.

Records and last year aside, I think the FSU staff was stale as hell. I also think Jimbo was tired of begging the admin for updates and support. He will not have that problem at TAMU. I do think they are putting the right pieces together though, and I believe we'll see a little improvement in 2018 (on the field), but ultimately they'll be 3rd in the West next year. I think recruiting will take a big step forward for 2019 and 2020 classes. Once he gets a couple classes of his guys in, and the new scheme trickles down, he's got no excuses.

In 2021 he has Bama and Auburn at home, with LSU on the road. LSU IMO won't scare anyone for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if they had early success in 2019, but he'd have to find his 2018 QB with a quickness. If he can develop Mond (similar guy to BW) or Starkel, land a guy like McKee for 2018, and keep Gunnell on board for 2019 (#1 Pro Componsite) and get him to EE, he just might shock some folks sooner than later.

Anyway, it's a toss up, but I'd wager on the side of Jimbo winning in 2021. Bet?

And back to the Q that started this, I still think TAMU has a better shot at a NC than ND over the next 5 seasons. BK, even with his turnaround, is not without speculation. 2019 could be a cluster situation for us given the schedule if things don'g fall the right way. Or, PJ could come in and perform a miracle. I'm hoping for the miracle, but not betting on one in 18 or 19. 2020 or 2021 on the other hand, if most things stay constant, could be our year. Just like 2021 could be Jimbo's.

Clemson needs credit here...they picked their guy and hung in there with him. He actually took a shit in his third year...the year of truth. There is no way in hell Texas A&M is going to accept 5 and 6 Ls for 3 years. Clemson did. Since Dabo's 4th year the dividends have been there, but the first 3 were tough. I see A&M bailing on coaches in search of the transcendent guy...but people who throw money at shit miss that guy fairly often. I predict A&M will be a cautionary tale, not a Clemson.

I tend to agree with you. Jimbo won’t have the cushion that Clemson gave Dabo. He needs to win from the start, in a tougher conference.

It will be interesting. Aside from Bama, I honestly don't see TAMU being a bitch to anyone in the West over the next couple of years. If Jimbo gets figures out the QB situation, he could be very pesky in the SEC early.

I don't think TAMU will give him a huge cushion, but I do think he'll have a year or two to right the ship. They are not cellar dwellers right now, so it's not like Jimbo is walking into a team void of talent. He's got some good pieces, just needs to figure out the QB situation and start recruiting his ass off. 2018 he'll have to visit Bama, Auburn, SCar, and MissSt. Clemson at home early. I don't think anyone is going to freak out if they drop 4 next year given that schedule. If Jimbo figures out his QB situation early, I wouldn't be shocked to see them knock off Clemson the second week at College Station. Clemson looked less than stellar against Bama. I think they've definitely taken a few steps back and will be experimenting with QBs early in the season. I think how Jimbo does in the recruiting space will also soften the cushion so to speak as well.

Tom Cable is formerly the head coach of the Raiders. Gruden is reportedly hiring him back as the Oline coach.

Also, he once punched out an assistant. I don't think ND would be too keen on hiring him, with his past. Would be interesting, though!

Sometimes players and coaches just need a little punch.

Texas: Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand is joining the Longhorns staff as co-offensive coordinator / offensive line coach. We can confirm the move which Brett McMurphy first reported.

Not having an OLine coach in place does hurt a little bit, but I don't think it's horrible. We have 13 scholarship OLineman signed for next season if Jimmy Byrne stays and no one transfers, we could use maybe 1-2 more guys if they are the right guys, hopefully we are able to keep Luke Jones, and we are still chasing NPF & Jarrett Patterson & maybe a grad transfer (Calvin Anderson). If we go past signing day with 13 or more lineman I think we'll be fine. As for 2019, we have a boatload of talent in the midwest and around the country that have been on campus and are interested in ND. If we miss out on one Junior Day in January for having some recruits there then it isn't the end of the world as long as we get the best OL Coach for ND.

Also a tidbit about Safeties Coach, I don't think we should be too worried about timing because we have 8-9 safeties on the roster and we aren't recruiting any more at the moment for 2018.
