Thats fine, but good, real playoff contenders will get the crowd out of it by halftime. Its time for Notre Dame to nut up or shut up.

Agree with this. I feel really good about Book now too. I mean, our defense actually has an offense that it can lean on if need be, even though they haven't had to yet. But there will come a time.

I just really love our balance right now, less than a handful of teams have this balance IMO.

This is assuming Rhuland or Banks can fill in serviceably at LG.

I mean, this is the benefit of recruiting high quality OL talent every year, right? I feel for Bars and know he's a darn good player, but I'm hoping the drop off isn't too drastic.

You're right. But to take it another level, I'm really hoping Banks can be that guy. I have no doubt Rhuland knows the position, technique, and what to do, but it's nice having that giant LG pulling to clear a path. But like you said, we have enough options that the best man will win.

That atmosphere was the most electric I've seen a stadium for a Notre Dame game since Florida State in 2014. This won't be that.

Blacksburg will be louder than miami, this is what we are going to be running into

Purely from a noise standpoint? Maybe. The thing about Miami was the absolute disgust that the have for ND. That place was full of hate. It won't be that way this weekend.

I don't know about that , majority of those miami fans were new as they have a terrible fan base

No, I expect the fanbase sold these tickets to the highest bidder after they lost to Old Dominion and they realized their season had gone to shit.

I don't know if many VT fans would sell their tickets for a chance to see ND play at home at night. Hope you're right.

Agreed. I'm not trying to say that ND comes out and shits the bed. I fully expect us to punch them in the throat to start the game, make a statement. I just believe that place will be going bonkers for about a half hour just before the game/start of it.

Last year OSU lost @ Iowa (55-24) one week after a close win over PSU at home.

2016 they lost @ PSU (24-21) and struggled the following week at home vs. Northwestern (24-20). Needed OT to beat Wisconsin the week before PSU.

2017 Clemson lost @ Syracuse mid-season

2016 Clemson lost at HOME TO PITT IN NOVEMBER - going on to win it all. Pitt was sandwiched b/w Syracuse and Wake Forest.

Outside of Bama - it happens.

This. As much as we want to say it doesn't happen, it does. I don't believe it will t=for our guys, but it does happen.

Wasn't Miami indoor, capturing all the noise?

VT is outside. If that's true (I could be wrong), no chance it's as loud as Miami IMO.

Absolutely 100% disagree. This is a big game for VT but far from the biggest game they've played and VT lost a lot of buzz and momentum after losing to Old Dominion.

The game last year in Miami was the biggest game the U had played in the last 15 years, easily. They were undefeated, they had swagger, the city was entirely behind them, the U was back and ND was in town. That place was not only loud, but it was downright venomous. Unruly and dangerous doesn't even begin to describe it. It was the toxic-ist of toxic environments.

VT will be loud and rocking, but it won't come even remotely close to the Miami game. That game meant A LOT more to Miami than this does to VT.

Not entirely, but it's walled in and it does indeed lock in a lot of sound.

VT won't come close. It's not just the noise factor either, Miami was a toxic waste dump of poison and vitriol. Brawls, throwing sh*t, drunk and unruly fans made up 75% of the stadium. It was pure chaos.

Also, Black Album is overrated.

It's good, but it doesn't touch the first four albums, especially Kill 'Em All. I'd love to see our guys come out to Creeping Death or The Four Horsemen.

My in-laws are huge VT fans so I end up watching a lot of VT football. Trust me, the energy at Lane Stadium will be crazy to start the game. Whether it stays that way is up to how ND plays. The better we play, the less energy there will be - but this isn't South Beach with whimsical fans either, these are actual true-blue diehard fans. Of course, this exact game was probably the entire focus of the offseason "chaos training" in the weight room. Don't underestimate the energy at Lane Stadium - doing so would be arrogant on our part.

I watched a lot of Josh Jackson, the injured starter. His replacement, Ryan Willis, is a good QB. That situation is analogous to our QB situation minus the injury. JJ is a good running QB but struggled to make throws. Willis is a composed QB who can hit timing routes but doesn't have the biggest arm strength. We cannot just dismiss him as a worse off QB because VT may have upgraded their offense with the switch.

ND keys:
- Play tough defense; pressure on QB and keep passes short; just like we have all season.
- Make tackles, VT fights for extra yards. Gang tackling will be important this game. Much higher likelihood in 2018 ND defense than 2016.
- Shut down the run game. I don't doubt our inside run defense, it's the stretch plays that worry me. I think our LBs will be very good, very disciplined. If Bilal/Coney can make plays like that outside stretch play against Stanford we will be in good shape.
- Offensively, be ready to grind. I think we can run on VT but they take pride in their defense (obviously). There's a reason Bud Foster is sought after. Extra motivation after ODU.
- Newsome will need to come up huge with his punts. They will send pressure so he will need to be quick as well.
- We will hear this about 76 times on Saturday night, but look out for whoever wears #25. This was Frank Beamer's number and they rotate this jersey to a different player every week based no who is deserving. Most of the time it's defensive side of the ball. That player usually performs very well when it's his turn.

I believe we will win but this will not be a cakewalk. This game will show whether we learned how to handle an atmosphere like Miami. I can 10000000% guarantee you that CBK is emphasizing this to the team and will work to not be overwhelmed by the moment.

Yeah I agree. Even if you want to say most of those fans were jumping on the bandwagon the first thing they learn to do is hate ND. I mean that environment was was freaking LIT. The hate was in the air and palpable.

I think we might see VT taking risks on the Irish short passing routes and bubble screens.
Looking at the ND film the past two weeks they will surmise that this is the only way maybe to stop the Irish.

We may see some new lanes/stop and go routes/ 8 cuts from the Ian Book/chip long
route tree

I think you're right. They are going to dare ND to throw over the top. This feels like a Claypool kind of a game.

The weather helped give Miami a huge edge too along with the rowdy crowd, VT wont have the same advantage from a weather standpoint.

Miami was a swamp that night. It was hot and muggy as hell.

When a team goes from 45 degrees to 85 degrees in the middle of November, its gonna make you a little uncomfortable, especially the big boys.

You saw McGlinchey and Nelson were pouring out buckets of sweat after one series, and looked like they were going into cardiac arrest by the second.
