That's not true. That kid was lights out last year. It's not just size, it's his ability to move in the pocket, extend plays, and deliver the ball to his playmakers. You watch - he's going to frustrate the crap out of us next week when we put pressure on him and he escapes the pocket and either scrambles for a first down or finds a receiver downfield.

Now, he's definitely had a subpar year, no doubt. He's got to cut down on the picks or he'll slip out of the first round. And he has definitely lost his mojo. I think ND will get at least one pick against him. But he's got more than just size. Kid can play.

sorry, we disagree. I would pick these QBs over him in next year's draft in a second:

(Not in any specific order, just before Darnold)

Josh Rosen
Lamar Jackson
Josh Allen
Baker Mayfield
Mason Rudolph
Riley Ferguson

This game is always "difficult" for us. Not been difficult for them lately when they're at home. An ND team that went 10-3 only won by 10 at home vs. an 8-6 USC team the week that their coach was dismissed for being an alcoholic. Can't think of more favorable circumstances. Meanwhile, they blow us out in their building regularly.

'14 was a blowout... not sure about '16. Definitely not '10 or '12.

So, in the BK era, they've blown us out once at home. That is not "regularly." Try harder.

Darnold is a good QB, he has definitely had issues this year. But I watched that dude semi-closely last year and the kid can play, he has got some legitimate skills.

As the past has shown time and time again, and also pointed out by other posts', ND has a way of making the opposing QB look like the heisman frontrunner; Darnold has the potential to seize on that, and capitilize. I've seen him skillfully thread the needle with his passes (not get lucky; but skillfully thread the needle - check his rose bowl throw to JuJu) when he is 'on a good day' he can carve up any secondary in a very deliberate manner.

Luckily for ND, dude has the turnover bug this year, and hopefully that trend continues.

Have you dudes watched much USC this year? They're not good. If we lose, it'll be because we laid an egg. We should easily cover.

He is a good QB. His problems this year are due to an O-line that has been inconsistent. If they protect him, it's going to be a struggle. If we can get pressure on him, we should win this. I'm guessing the USC offensive staff is watching a lot of Wake Forest film this week.

from r/cfb:

2011 was the last time a USC Head Coach was in South Bend to coach against the Fighting Irish. The Head Coach was Lane Kiffin and USC beat ND 31 - 17
2013 was a different story. September 24th, came the infamous "Fire Lane and leave him at LAX" loss to ASU. Ed Orgeron became the interim coach, and led the team to South Bend. Although Notre Dames starting QB left the game, USC couldn't score in the 2nd half... in fact no one scored in the 2nd half. ND 14 - USC 10.
2015 After losing to Washington on Oct 8th, and the equally infamous firing of Sarkisian. This gave Helton the bye week to handle all the fall out and to prepare USC for Notre Dame as an Interim coach. A complete opposite of the last game in South Bend, USC lost to a shoot out ND 41 - USC 31.

So you're telling me I was right? Thanks man!

I'll let you wonder if that was with or w/o an eye roll.

Here's a weather prediction that won't change: Temps in the 60's w/ 100% chance of darkness. What will be interesting is the wind. Right now a couple models are calling for 13-15 mph out of the south.

You are the first and last person who'll ever type this.

SC is obviously "good". What metric are you using?

What's "easily cover" in your opinion for this game w/ ND -3.5? 7? 10? 14? 15+?

Yea, my expectation is we should have a field day running the ball and could put up a nice score offensively. However, the matchup makes me nervous as it would be such a USC thing to do, to have their coming out party in ND stadium.

With that said, I'm fairly optimistic that Elko with 2 weeks will have a pretty good plan dialed up for them.

Yes and I set their WR's flying all around the field which we haven't been great at stopping

Eye test. They've beaten some not-very-good teams by not-very-impressive margins.

20+

I'm optimistic we win, although 20+ would be wild. SC has been mediocre, but they still have elite talent and they'll be very up for this game. Personally I see us winning by 7 with a late stop, but I'll gladly take your prediction.

Maybe I just have 2011 PTSD still...I believe we were around -7 that night and USC had similarly looked average that season.....Crist fumble and that stupid swing pass fumble to Cierre....

If we win by 2 scores, the playoff talk is going to be defeaning.

I'm not a homer in my picks, either. This is purely a product of "not impressed with USC" than any kind of over-hype for ND.

If the run game is consistent with how the Irish has played all year (less GA), this should be a good game for the Irish.

oh wait, did i forget italics in my initial comment??

:eek:hwhateve

Ill stand by the point that if the difference between 70, 66, and 60 is what we need to win, we're fucked

If we can limit Burnett/Darnold, keep Rector from wrecking BW, and keep the ball away from Jack Jones, we'll be fine.

In short, we need to run the damn ball effectively, and BW has to avoid keeping it too long or tossing JJ's way. Hoping we see heavy TE usage.
