Allowing only 7 points to this talented Louisville offense is impressive as much as people want to ignore that.

Agreed and good point. No doubt they will be getting a game ball if one gets passed out. Kyren deserves one too.

Anyone want to debate the Phil vs Book issue after this game?

Not even Books mom would side with him. I am literally ready for Darren Clark and if he Schitts the bed then we can bring in Book to see what he can do? Does Clark not get more than 12 points today? Does Phil, does BRANDON?! In all the games that Book has started and won name one of them Brandon Wimbush wouldn’t have won?

LSU in 2017, for sure. Brandon nearly lost to Vanderbilt and Ball St in 2018, then transferred and was benched so I don't know what you're smoking. Wimbush never passed for 300 yards in his career, so you could look at close games like Northwestern and USC in 2018 where we needed Book's stronger passing attack to win. We don't win those with Wimbush.

I feel like that’s getting overlooked big time. This game could have easily been a 30-7 type game. It is what it is. ND is a top 10-15 team and needs to catch breaks to beat the big boys.

Yeah ND Didn't finish drives and ate a lot of clock. 12 points looks like shit on paper but its not like the team wasn't able to move the ball.

Also Tutu Atwell and Des Fitzpatrick would both be ND's best receiver.

I’d rather look at the 2017 USC game that he he beat raced favored USC and put up better numbers against a high caliber team that Book never has. UCF has a gun slinger in a pass happy offense that I’d we had we would have put up 40 today. Book has been a recruiter backup a la Tommy Rees and we know Kelly loves his personal Rudy stories because he was Rudy at a D5 or D6 school. It’s all conjecture of course but sadly this won’t be the last time Book will be ragged on this season. Wait till he loses a game and really schitts the bed. We need a QB that can get an invite to the combine. Ian Book ain’t playing in Canada.

Yeah people bitching about not getting the ball to Lenzy and I'm like "he's not p;laying". Two end arounds by Avery Davis should have been a pretty good clue.

That's the thing though, Book doesn't lose! He's like 25-3 now. What are his three losses? One to future champ Clemson in the playoffs, one at Georgia in a close one, and a stinker in the rain at Ann Arbor where the entire team and coaching staff embarrassed themselves. It's pretty hard hating on those losses, Michigan aside. It's not like he's dropping one to Syracuse like Clausen.

Coaches put the best player on the field, period. People clamour to bench Tommy, then Hendrix nearly costs us the game. Some of us fought for Zaire to regain his spot post injury (I ate crow), and Kizer was clearly the right choice as Zaire lost his confidence and the offense. Phil has played up and down since transferring, he needed heroics to beat lowely Texas St. The grass ain't always greener, and it's hard to get a QB like Trevor Lawrence to come here, AND have him live up to expectations. Recruiting can be a crap shoot, and stars mean absolutely nothing once you step on campus...not if you fail to live up to potential. No one that has transferred to date has made a big splash, that should tell you everything. I'm fairly confident we have the best player at QB that we currently have available on the roster. That's all you can ask for. Coaches are de-incentivized to start the lesser of two players, that's not good for job security.

The thing is we don’t really know what we have until we make a change. Kizer was essentially a 3rd stringer and ended up being a really good QB for us (better than Book IMO). That’s why I wish Kelly would let his backups sling it a little bit when he puts them in at the end of games. No one gets better (and it’s hard to evaluate talent) when Clark comes in to hand it off to CBo for 2 quarters.

It's CFB.
We won they lost I really don't care how they won.
Sure if we win another NC I'll be drunk and naked on my roof howling at the moon.
But I'll worry about that happening if and when it does.
Until then enjoy the ride.

Without the D ND might have lost this one.

Bad coach decision to not kick FG at end of half, almost came back to bite.

Why not shorten the passes and let guys catch and run?

Yea, 4th and 9 was just stupid. No other way to say it.

Still don't understand why we don't use the TEs more. And sorry, Javon is not a guy IMO to throw a fade too. At least we got to see Austin a little.

Today the D had a number of TFL’s, but no forced turnovers and no sacks. They had 4 or 5 sacks on us.

Through 4 games we have 1 pick and I think a couple of fumble recoveries. The one pick was big to keep us 2 scores ahead of FSU last week. We need turnovers to be a great D. We aren’t near that yet.

This game reminded me of our classic Pitt games, flat, not executing, scraping out an ugly win. I was disappointed in a number of things and hope it was just to overall funk in the air today:

- Book missing on the pass to Mayer over the middle on the first drive
- Book missing Javon on the slant in the endzone. Von had body position and if nothing else a PI might've happened.
- No answer for the blitzing, reminded me of Clemson playoff game
- Javon dropping some passes, especially that 2 pt conversion
- Not kicking the field goal to end the half
- Allowing Cunningham to get two big chunk runs on their scoring drive, one on second down to set up manageable third down and the one on third down to allow them to go for it on 4th
- Not being ready for possible onside post Louisville TD
- I'm missing a lot more

I hate these types of games. I love our TE's, RB's and OL.

Love our OL. Love Kyren. Love our tight ends. Love our defense.

Gotta fix the rest. The rest is what makes ND not a real contender.
Our strengths are what COULD get us to the playoffs. Our weaknesses are what WILL get us embarrassed there.

I'll create a gasoline fire for some of your entertainment: Some guy said --- name one game that Book has won that Wimbush would not have won.

Answer: Write down a list of all the games where Book was the winning QB (TEAMS win and lose by the way) and then arbitrarily highlight about a third of them.

Enjoy the darkness ... who needs the joy ... or accurate memories.

Wimbush was objectively terrible.... so good point? How he compares to a QB that couldn’t start in the AAC is irrelevant to the current discussion.

Show me an AAC QB that beats LSU in 2017. Not happening unless they get lucky.

At some point what does it hurt to play Jordan Johnson and Xavier Watts? Skorwonek and McKinley aren’t getting separation unless a DB falls down

What point are you trying to make? Everyone agrees that Book is much better than Wimbush. It doesn’t change the fact that A) he has severe limitations and B) his play is holding back the Irish from competing at an elite level.

I like Book. He’s a winner. But he’s reached his ceiling and it’s not good enough considering what we think this team can accomplish otherwise.

Just to add or subtract (or multiply or divide?), Rick Neuheisel said that Notre Dame has a terrific Oline and running game and defense that could be competitive in the playoffs, but they need to fix everything else (especially the passing game vis-a-vis receivers.) {he didn't focus on the receivers specifically in that exact sentence but the remarks as a whole pointed that way.) His views seemed to point to the staff getting a better handle on what the strengths of a passing game might be given our personnel. ... I might be reading too much into his thoughts but the stuff about the OLine RBs and the D are a near quote.

Positives:
- They played good enough to get a 19-7 win which feels a little better. The coaching staff and game script screwed the rest up for them.
- Holding that UL offense to 219 yards was really impressive.
- Kyren Williams and the running game should start every game plan.
- Quite impressed with Bracy’s physicality. He’s shown himself quite well making plays in space on the outside.
- DT’s and ILB’s were much better today. Much more assignment sound.

Negatives:
- More of the same with our inconsistent 5th year QB. Not much else to say there. Below 6 yds/att is terrible. And if you consider that Cunningham had better results against our D then Book did against there’s, it really puts it in perspective.
- But, I’m even more disappointed in the offensive gameplan. They clearly went into this game thinking Book would pick up where he left off last week and this would be a “showtime” type of start. It never is. He’s not that guy.
- As good as the defense is, the Buck LB position seems like it’s at its worst since Elko and Lea got here. I think they need to pick a guy and get him more reps. I’m taping out on this 3 man depth chart.

Ian Book would beat out Tom Brady by a couple miles in the same year as TB’s development at Michigan. I’ll never understand the Debbie downers when it comes to the quarterback situation. You have to have a receiver or 2 that can separate himself and catch the damn ball when it’s thrown to them...

Great win! UNC is getting beat up by FSU. Puts it into perspective. BK is right. Winning is hard. Just keep winning. On to Pitt.

We need our offense to look like the rams in my opinion. Center it on the run game and then open up the dynamic pass routes on your play action.
