I dont think the officiating was overly bias but it sure was bad.

Gutsy win. Proud of the kids but this needs to stop. Didn’t Kelly always say he could create offense, that defense was the issue. Our offensive play calling is so questionable. There are good athletes on this team being completely misused. Sad.

PJ wouldn't pull that last run off, and probably doesn't get down the field on that last drive.

We also wouldn't have been losing.

I think Long is a bigger problem than Book, but Book is still a problem.

poor game all around, great last drive.

sorry, but playing calling sucked on both sides.

while a bad game, i think it was the right kind of game and ending to help them get their heads out of their collective asses.

I hope this is right. Book seemed genuinely fired up when he scored and tbh I don't think I've been this emotional about the team all year. But who knows, ball's a weird game. Running too hot can be just as problematic as running too cold.

Sobering fact: Virginia Tech lost by 35 points to Duke this season.

You assume too much. Read the article from this week. PJ is 2nd string because he's 2nd string right now. He has trouble reading defenses (Apparently worse than Book) and has other issues. This is a case of Rees/Hendrix all over again. Hendrix was the more highly touted prospect, but Rees was the clear starter.

BK needs to take over play calling. We need another dependable WR that isn't named Claypool

two things.
1) I'd be OK going straight to Rees calling plays......
2) I've never really like our O for WRs. Either the staff is far too conservative to get young talent in the mix, the O scheme is too complicated for young WRs, or the scheme just isn't complimentary for speed and agility. It just feels like 95% possession type plays, 4% 50/50 balls, and 1% speed/agility.

Two issues on the last drive with Long...

1. The run when we had to burn our last timeout
2. 2nd and goal and Kmet, who is one of our only two threats, is blocking

Throwing a shallow crosser in the middle of the field on 3rd and 10 with a minute left and no TOs

This is truth. I don't know if it's coaching or what, but our WRs as a position group need work. We can't keep throwing just to Claypool, there's an easy way to fix that as a defense.

I have never seen a team target one receiver like Ian Book targeting Chase Claypool, never.

First season watching football or just dementia.

NEVER?

Tim Brown, Tate, Samardzija, Casper, Gatewood, Floyd, Seymour, Snow, McAfee, Rudolph, Eifert, Fasano, Brown, Hunter, etc, etc, etc

That's just ND.

Never heard of Rice, Gonzalez, Carter, again Tim Brown, T.O. ???

I think you are in for a lot of heartbreak if you are banking on PJ to be good.

I was too young to remember a lot of the older guys, but I'd have to say this is as bad as it's ever been as far as a lack of targets. Samardzija at least had a TE to play with and had either Stovall/Mcknight on the other side who were reliable in their own right. Floyd had Tate typically, and vis-versa, or Eifert was there to provide another option. Like I said, can't really comment on Brown, Casper, Gatewood, Seymour, and Snow, but this is as bad as it's been going back to 2005 at least. There just isn't a reliable 2nd option for us that gets open consistently.

Bench Finke for Keys and switch Armstrong back to WR.
Smith looks pretty good, Jones back next week. Go hunting for RBs for next season on the portal.
Armstrong is a much better WR than RB (I must admit I haven't seen any of the game).

Obviously a bad day but was the last 4 minutes character building enough for us to be optimisitic. When have we had a 4 minute comeback like that?

It's no good comparing other games by opponents, there is no Transitive Property in football. Every game is it's own entity, by the same token Georgia is just slightly better than VT because we failed to finish the 4th quarter drive in that one. It doesn't work.

I'm fine with a strong WR1 like Claypool who is big and athletic as a #1, and I'm good with a lot of TE play. After that though, we've been void of anything different for a while. I mean I love Finke's story and all, but give me a little more Fuller/TJJones type WR and offense please.

I think you assume too much. BK has a track record of playing less talented players for the player “he knows” and feels is less risky. It’s obvious to (almost) everyone that Book isn’t getting it done at an acceptable level. I’m not at practice, but my guess is this is more of the same from BK. I’m generally pretty supportive and believe he (BK) has steered the program in the right direction. These personnel decisions are puzzling to most fans and observers. I believe you and BK are in the minority if you think a QB move isn’t a good idea. I’m not just saying Jurkovec either, give Clark a look too. The fact remains Book is regressing and that’s clear to almost everyone. Rip off the band aid and get the next guy reps

Well the 98 yard scoop 6 was a big turn around. Momentum killer, 14 point swing, whatever you want to call it. Plays like that change the game and are hard to over come sometimes. I aint ready to toss this bunch in the bon fire yet. 6-2 is a far cry from 5-3.

PJ

PJ

I get a kick out of those of you who keep saying “Don’t expect PJ to be any good”. Except for the spring game, I keep hearing he has recovered from that. Any time I have seen him this season, he has been good. Obviously it has been mop up duty, but how do you know for certain he won’t be very good. I happen to think with some playing time he will make us look back and say why didn’t we make this change sooner.

Btw, going to watch Loyola Academy play Mane South in the Illinois state playoffs tonight. Maine South O versus Loyola D.

We DID IT! WE BEAT VA TECH!!!! Woooooo!

It was a fun time, despite me freezing my ass off. The ice falling was a nice touch. My wife hung in there like a trooper and made to the end.

That should have been a win by 28.

Where did I say the transitive property works in sports? I’ll save you time...I didn’t. I was simply pointing out the fact that Duke absolutely annihilated VT in Lane Stadium after the Hokies had two weeks to prepare. Now I know that doesn’t guarantee a damn thing for the ND game but ask yourself how many times has Duke hosted a ranked, brand name opponent for a night game? It’’s a tiny stadium but I suspect it will be sold out. VT’s defense is porous yet look what happened today. Duke’s defense may be better than their offense.

So it doesn’t tell the entire story but it tells me that duke will be a tougher opponent & they now have home field advantage.

Surely, you don’t think QB is the ONLY issue w/ this ND team after today?

Hamilton would have had a pick 6 at the end if Bilal didn't taken him out.

Always happy to win but my excitement is gone. Even if we win out I’m not sure we can cap the season off with a big bowl win. Still bowl eligible now so that’s always good.
