I waited a day to post the way I really feel.
Every post since my last is a facet of the Ogundeji conversation, I feel. (That is why 'they' is mad reps to you'all!)
My motivation in this post is my absolute disgust with the posters on other sites and through other media sources that "congratulate ND on pulling a recruit in a rough fought battle from Western Michigan, Toledo, and Buffalo!"
First of all fvck them because next to the Irish, I love my Rockets! Does anyone know how many players Toledo has put in the NFL over the last 20 years? It may surprise some that it ranks favorably with some of their cockles power five schools!
Secondly, the reason schools like Toledo, Western, NI, BSU, BGSU, etc, often upset major players, and sometimes end up in the Top 25, is because of how they recruit. They are much more intense in evaluating, reach a broader scope of athlete, and spend a hell of a lot more time looking than the big schools do. And that is a fact. Because the difference between a good and a great season for these schools is finding a kid or two a year that is a cut above. (eg., See any article about Chuck Martin at Miami.)
Everyone knows the list with that kid from Miami that plays for the Steelers. Why do you think the Redhawks got him? His high school coach moved him to WR so his own son could play quarterback!
I think you all have touched on important points. This kid is young and not developed. He is going to explode, with his work ethic and the program ND sets out for these kids. No offense to anyone, especially Coach D, but I think the evaluation holds a presupposition that this is a developed high school athlete. In other words, you would rate a guy like Tillery different than a guy like Ogundeji, for instance.
Speaking of comparisons for this kid without hyperbolizing, there are two; Romeo and Kappy. Kappy was a skinny kid out of Texas that came to ND as only a bit of what he became, because he was a major lynchpin of that '12 defense. And as for Romeo, how many people have wished aloud that he had benefitted from a red-shirt year? We will see how Romeo does this year!
