Gonna beat sweating these damn covid test now. Go Irish beat bc!

My understanding is that every student had to be COVID negative last week or their tickets were deactivated by the University. Not excusing it but hoping for the best. Sounds like BK had some foresight as well. He told his players that if they win the students will rush the field and that they needed to make a bee line for the locker room. As long as none of the players or staff were within six feet of fans w/o masks for more than 15 minutes, conventional wisdom says they should escape unscathed.

LOL, BK also said that he beat all the players to the tunnel. None of the players escaped being in contact with students.

That seemed obvious as BK has armed guards whereas the players are defenseless when trying to leave the stadium.

Normally this would be the perfect trap game // let down game. They gotta be emotionally exhausted after last night, hard to dial back in.

But all they gotta do is pull up some Jurkovec press clippings and the D + Book going to be ready to make a statement.

I have to imagine this team is at least a little peeved that PJ left them.

This is what I am thinking. I think having PJ on that team may actually benefit us.

Granted, you know PJ will be bringing his A-game too.

Phil is going to try too hard to prove to BK that he should’ve played him more. Book just proved that incorrect because he got that elusive BIG win. Think that’ll play into Lea’s hands. They’re going to be ready. I do think it won’t be “easy”, but it won’t be a loss imo

A. We're not going to "let down." This team stands on veteran O and D linemen and they will create solidity. By the way, except for the well-deserving Hinish, there was little overt praise for the two lines like we're now taking them for granted. BUT how do you beat Clemson in two overtimes without giant warriors still slugging it out after all that time? Both lines deserve game balls.

B. The game won't be easy despite Jurkovec making sophomore errors. BC has a toolbox attitude about coming to play. They are tough sob's. Some of those defensive guys I'd like to have playing for us. Brace yourself for another Coach "Winning is hard" post-game comment.

C. Jurkovec will make three really good plays. He will also make several really bad ones. If he gets excited about playing ND, he'll make a dozen really bad ones.

This is the flawed logic that makes Phil the bad guy and lets the staff off the hook.

Phil SHOULD have played more. He should have gotten some snaps with the rest of the first team in games, like 1 drive a game would've been nice. Instead of coming in too late and going into BK's 4 corner, game ender possessions.

Phil's mishandling and Book's handling are two different things and shouldn't be conflated. Yet that's what everyone continues to do.

I was 5*Phil, the prospect's biggest fan, but with that, I believe: Bringing back Book was the right thing for this team, this year. What ND didn't have a choice in was having both Book in '20 AND Phil in '21-'22. One thing had to go. Since the staff allowed Phil to backslide so much, the choice was obvious. Phil's V Shaped recovery, especially under the circumstances, makes it easy to wonder what will turn out to be the best long term play.

I would be much more worried about this game if ND world hasn't been worried about this game since it was scheduled. The 93 game should be playing on repeat in the Gug this week

I think the whole "Phil mishandled" thing is overblown.

I think it's pretty simple. Phil wanted to start and he didn't feel he was getting a fair shot. It's pretty obvious that choosing Book over him was the right move. The bigger worry for him was if he waited another year, is he still the guy in '21? I don't think that's as guaranteed as some make it out to be. Does PJ get usurped by Brendon Clark or a young phenom Ty Buchner? End of the day, PJ took the path of least resistance and solidified his spot. Nothing wrong with that. You only get so many years to prove your worth as an NFL caliber prospect.

Doesn't necessarily mean that Clark was for sure better than PJ, but I do think there was credibility to the idea that Phil wasn't the heir apparent to Book as some may have assumed.

I agree with almost everything Crusader just wrote. The only very minor quibble would be that I don't wonder what will be the best long-term play. Coach always says that the only game is the one you are playing or are preparing to play. I coached that way too. And, in scholarship, I also wrote that way. You roll with your best. ... and I've been an Ian fan from the non-starter days (so maybe my view that he was always the best is flawed.)

Occasionally you have a player that you don't want to give up on (for sure you don't) but who is not ready. Off-the-field, what you see in such a player might cause you to try to "babysit" the guy a little. That's both awkward if not dangerous (other players might see favoritism) but also usually doesn't work. It doesn't work because it REALLY depends upon the player not you. If a guy wants to fit into your program you have a chance --- it's your program afterall --- but you aren't really in control of both special cultivation and the primary job which is the Team Today.

The way that it went was always on Pete --- given that Ian was better --- and not in the majority on Coach.

And the fact that the staff allowed Phil to tank is the only reason you can write something that completely forgets that Phil was a a next level recruit that fell apart before our eyes.

I didn’t make my point well. I believe Phil should’ve gotten more time to show what he was capable of doing. If you’ve read my previous posts, you’d see that and not label my statement illogical. I do believe Phil didn’t do everything he needed to do while here and that affected his opportunities. Book does the right thing off the field apparently an wasn’t ready to cede the gig. I was a huge fan of Phil and always wanted to see more. I was a believer in his upside and talent. He did crumble while here and I think Phil himself had a large role in that fact. He is too immature to own that and continues to play the victim about his time here. I was repeatedly argued with during the BC/Clemson game for stating how impressed I was with Phil. I think my clumsy attempt at a point as partly due to the euphoria of the amazing win and Book’s outstanding late game performance.

I also agree that Phil wasn’t a shoe-in to be the next guy. He certainly had the pedigree, but his attitude seemed to lack (based on other’s reports). I wonder if Buchner (my next savior) would have wrested the job away from him, or maybe Clark/Pine? We could play the what if game forever, but right now I KNOW we have a guy that can lead this team to a clutch performance in a signature game.

That’s fair...especially your point about not conflating the two. PJ was quoted post-transfer as admitting he knew he’d be the starter sooner or later...he just didn’t want to wait. Personally, I think his biggest mistake was not enrolling early. It set him back in his development. Not saying coaching staff doesn’t deserve criticism but I think it’s equally shared. If you’re a big time stud QB today...it’s a no-brainer you enroll early to hasten your development & path to starter. He got enjoy his HS Senior year but at what cost? Kids have to make tougher decisions at an earlier age nowadays.

Well at least we aren’t Georgia fans. Before the season started, they had Jamie Newman & JT Daniels transfer in. Newman opted out & Daniels is 3rd string. Fans want to know why the 5-star is on the bench behind a former walk-on & a true freshman. The only answer given is “if JT was outperforming the other two in practice, don’t you think Kirby Smart would be using him?”

Sound familiar?

My thoughts on 5*Phil and the comments today...

1. He was my savior when he committed.
2. If you believe he was mishandled, you also have to consider that some of the young non-QB skill players could also be mishandled.
3. I firmly believe BK is conservative, and favors "doing it right" consistency and experience over ceiling/talent. I do think he should have been given more snaps in mop up time with 1st team talent. Not just time killing hand offs.
4. Phil's comments were pretty immature
5. Phil has had moments at BC, but doesn't look anywhere close to the savior status I gave him when he committed. Not his arm, and not his feet.
6. Nothing Phil has done this year after getting the keys, makes me think we did the wrong thing staying with Book. He's more up and down that Book, and surprisingly, Books seems to have better wheels.
7. Time will tell. I'm not even sure if PJ is better than Clark at this point.

Bonus - If PJ required a safe space, coddling, and smiley faces, it's best he moved on. My gut lately after seeing him play makes me think he was more afraid of our next savior.

Line is down to 12.5...something doesn't smell right.

Gamblers (who have no emotional connection to either team) probably assume a letdown game by ND after such a mentally & physically taxing game last night. Doesn’t mean they don’t think ND wins...just the usual hangover trap game after the biggest win in the BK era. Hopefully, the ND kids are fully aware of 1993 but more importantly they want to play hard for THEIR QB and beat the QB who chose to be their opponent instead of their teammate.

I can literally trace all my ND let downs and heart breaks to David Gordon.

It's all coming full circle.

Gonna be a big test of the on-field leadership of this team how they come out against BC. I think they're up to it.

By the way after looking GREAT for a half against Clemson, Phil totally sucked ass against a terrible Syracuse team this past weekend. He has a high ceiling and shows flashes... and Chip Long really did create a super toxic environment on offense for him and everyone else... but there is no evidence from his half a season starting at BC that he should’ve gotten more “game in the balance” reps over Book and that those reps would’ve helped the team. Absolutely none. He is #42 in the country in QBR despite being anointed by BC coaches and having the offense tailored to him on a weekly basis.
