As a fellow firefighter, that fire is a butt clincher and one you only imagine of going to. The fire tactics on this have to be 100% defensive if the roof collapsed. Unless the Almighty God is using his powers to help, I can’t see anyway possible anything the inside could be saved.

Prayers to the firefighters there and may God watch over them and Notre Dame.

A former NYFD chief described the tactic as, "Surround and Drown".

Yep. When the Ladders go up, the building comes down. As soon as I saw that much fire through the roof, it was too late.

Probably the saddest i've ever been about anything outside of a human death. Besides the Vatican and Jerusalem where else would you rather visit as a Catholic?

The Kölner Dom would be higher on my list than Notre Dame but that's about it.

Wife and I literally just started planning a trip to Paris for Summer 2020. Besides the Louvre I was most excited about getting to see Notre Dame.

Damn shame this happened at all even bigger shame for the cultural history being lost.

I'm not even all that religious, but seeing the Cross hanging undamaged gives me some hope they will rebuild.

It's the Cathedral of Notre Dame, I'm sure it'll be rebuilt.

I'll assume Church funded contacts don't work quite like government ones... you never know, if you go in late 20 it may be back up and running in some way...

Miraculous. Only word to describe it. It’s amazing that the stone vaults held even with the heat and weight of the wood above burning on top of it.

For the level of craftsmanship and difficulty required to rebuild something like this, no way it would be ready that fast. On a project like this, it could easily take that long just to get the engineering and construction drawings completed. Not to mention all the remediation from water/smoke damage that will need to be done. I’d guess more like 5+ years for completion. This could easily be a billion dollar plus project.

Great, a second collection at mass for the next 4 years. How wonderful.

For sure. The renovations that they were doing, which may have caused all this, were 160 million. Pretty sure that's the figure I read.

Apparently some French billionaire already pledged 100 million for the restoration.

How is the scaffolding of all things still intact?

It's steel, independent framing from the building, and I'm guessing it's currently not under much live load. Unless something falls into it or the fire were to burn exceptionally hot (unlikely) it's not going anywhere.

I'm personally just baffled how a fire of that magnitude could start from an "accident." There are usually lots of safeguards to prevent something like this in construction, much less restoration of one of the most historic structures in the world.

I don’t doubt any of this aside from NDC being closed to the public for five plus years... even if it’s stages... Anyone ever been to St Marks? Theyll find a way.

Places of worship are extremely difficult from a firefighting perspective. Especially an advanced fire like this looked to be. If you aren't able to get to the contents quickly with a couple of hand lines, you're in for a long day with outside streams and auxiliary firefighting methods. Once it gets up into the ceiling area it's going to be tough. From a collapse perspective the steeple and tower are usually first to go. A horrible day and was heartbroken to see this on tv today. Especially this Holy Week and such a beautiful and historic place. Over 800 years old. I'm glad the structure wasn't completely lost and most important no human life.

French government has stated they will assist in raising funds and getting the church rebuilt. Restoration and remediation of the contents that survived will be as tedious if not more tedious than rebuilding the roof.

I hope they find this was accidental and not intentional.

It took an estimated 13,000 oak trees(~57 acres for our Aggies here) to do that roof. Good Lord.

Pictures are circulating showing that the famed Rose Windows are still completely in tact. I'm unsure how so much could have been preserved.

Official statement from ND:

Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame, issued the following statement about the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris:

“We are deeply saddened to see the damage to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, a church whose exquisite Gothic architecture has for centuries raised hearts and minds to God. We join in prayer with the faithful of the cathedral and all of France as they begin the work of rebuilding. We are reminded of the words of our founder, Holy Cross Father Edward Sorin, a French immigrant, who, after a terrible fire destroyed our campus in 1879, said:

‘Tomorrow we will begin again and build it bigger, and when it is built, we will put a gold dome on top with a golden statue of the Mother of God so that everyone who comes this way will know to whom we owe whatever great future this place has.’”

At the direction of Father Jenkins, the University will donate $100,000 toward the renovation of the cathedral. In addition, the bells of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus will toll 50 times — representing the 50 Hail Marys of Our Lady’s rosary — at 6 p.m. Tuesday (April 16) to mark the start of the rebuilding process for the cathedral.
