1) Toews

Saad probably had an offer sheet too that CHI wouldn't have been able to match. Traded him for more than they would have got as compensation from th offer sheet. (Anything between 5M and 7M would have gotten the Hawks 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks.)

In a world without a cap 100% agree. In the real world, 100% disagree.
Glad you asked. Yes, including Kane and Keith. Keith, IMO, is the closer call. He's definitely a better player, in fact I think he's the best defenseman since Lidstrom, but the 9 year age differential makes me lean towards Saad.
Kane is also a better player, but if Saad was asking for 6.5 mil/year, Kane's 4 mil/year more expensive than him. Kane's great, but I'd rather have Saad + a 4 mil/year player than Kane by himself. Saad also does so much more than Kane- he's good on the PK, might accelerate better than anyone in the game, and is solid in the defensive end.
To be clear, I pretty much meant I would trade Kane+his cap hit > Saad and his cap hit.
I guess the question is how much better is Kane. Saad had the luxury of playing on the same line as Toews and Hossa (Kane, Sharp and others at times too) his entire career. They attracted a ton of attention and gave him plenty of opportunities to score and look good. Don't get me wrong, I think Saad is really good. I'm just curious how he'll play when Toews and Hossa aren't next to him.
I feel ya. You'd have to eat too much $$$ to make it happen. I get the feeling everybody else thinks Kaner is overpaid and would NEVER pay him that. I do agree from a production and all around game aspect with what you said about Saad. BUT Hockey is a business that is more than what happens on the ice and there would be a full on fan revolt if Kaner got the bus out of town. Th original core works, just keep adding Cup Chasers and developing future Saads like Teravainen and Dano.
I've second guessed Bobby Knight, Lou Holtz even Phil Jackson now that he's with the Knicks. I'll never second guess the Bowmans after winning 3 Cups with 2 1/2 different teams.
.
In terms of potential, I think Saad's a top 5 player in the league: his combination of size, speed, and puck control is deadly. I will readily admit that I value him more than most.
He's a good player but no way.

Like the Hawks and Saad, I think we're just too far apart here. Saad is a first line forward, no doubt. I'm not certain he is elite though.
We just saw three guys with more potential on Tampa - Stamkos, Hedman and Johnson. I'd take Tarasenko, Forsberg, Mackinnon, Tavares, Seguin, and Karlsson over him too.
I'll grant you Stamkos, Hedman, Tavares, and *maybe* Seguin, while also throwing in Doughty.
But I think all of them belong in the same conversation.
Giroux, Kopitar, Benn, Karlson, Subban, Bergeron, Toews, Kane,

Sharp to Dallas
I have loved what my pens have done thus far, still waiting for more defense tho...
