Paul Johnson. Let's get back to the triple option.

I'm on record as to my belief that Kelly is one of the best in America, his task is doing it at Notre Dame under todays college football scene. IF he ever decides to leave, Johnson, or someone like that is the only OPTION left. Notre Dame cant compete straight up against minor league pro football. It is that simple. You have to find a way to protect the defense because they will never have the talent or depth on defense to compete against the teams who have guys on campus to win a football game on their way to a shot at the NFL. When you see how LSU looks on defense this will be clear. The fan base ( guys like me ) who love this football team must get real. Terrel,Stonebreaker,Zorich,Grable,Browner,McCoy,Hardy,Fanning,Light,Prichert,Duranko, etc aint coming out of the tunnel anymore. Facts are facts.

Adam Gase, Pep Hamilton, Matt Patricia, Kyle Shanahan, Brian Schottenheimer, Nathaniel Hackett, and Rocky Seto are all young guys with college experience now top assistants in the NFL.

Numbers aside with crappy job that Pep Hamilton does with the Colts offense I sure would hate for him to be any part of my program.

So the Colts are playoff bound at 11-5, ranked 6th in scoring, 3rd in total yards and 1st in passing yards and he's done a crappy job? Not a jibe at all, I don't watch much NFL.

They haven't beat a championship caliber team all season. Those awesome numbers were put up in probably the worst division in the NFL. They always have a slow start to every game this season. Plus I can't stand Colts fans that are mad with Trent Richardson's production, he is a North South runner and Pep tries to use him as a East West kinda guy. not to mention that they have a horrible O Line. So yes numbers aside I wouldn't want Pep in charge of my team!

Les Miles doesn't have the chest for Notre Dame!

Nor do most coaches, right Urban?

Because the Kelly NFL rumors thread is closed how many teams will reach out to him this week?

I hope the Bears aren't a team to show interest (or the Jets). They have to hire new GMs first so their head coaching searches could extend for a long time. If Kelly ultimately decides to move on I can't blame him; I just hope that if it happens the break is fast and clean.

We'll get one kicked off once there are some legit reports.

I'm fairly confident that he's at least on the list for the 49ers, and I know his agent has been calling NFL teams to gauge interest. I think he'll also be in play for the Jets and Chicago, not sure about Atlanta.

Lax, you know his agent has been calling gauging interest? If that is the case, then I'll start bracing myself.

Whoa, really? You know that?

If Kelly is initiating conversations with NFL franchises, then jumping to the NFL is a more serious possibility than I realized. I thought his name was being thrown around based on nothing but idle speculation.

Ok with all this talk about Kelly possibly leaving, who are legitimate candidates to replace him? Not people you want like Gruden or Stoops, who could we get is what I'm asking. Could Willingham be a possibility?

This has to be a blatant form of trolling.

I don't think ND would hire him back... ;)

Ok isn't the thread called NEXT YEARS COACH? How do you figure I'm trolling? I asked a legitimate question. If you want my opinion I would like Kelly to stay here next year and see what the results are.

I'm not convinced that ND is a "dream job" anymore for most prime coaches. So unless people on this site are ok with ND hiring a mid-level coach that's on the rise, I think expectations should be lowered. I'm speaking in general terms.

Just think about all the hurdles and unrealistic expectations that are thrust onto any ND head coach. ND admin has all but come out and said that academics are one and everything else, including football, are a distant second.

Obstacles off the top of my head that other schools don't have to deal with:

1) Coaching salaries. ND is avg. Top programs have a lot more money to pay the assistants and that's why they hang on to them and why they get better coaches.

2) Facilities. ND is avg. What ND has is nice, but it pales in comparison to top programs.

3) Living. Some love the fact that ND will not segregate students and athletes. Some kids enjoy it, but I think ND loses out on some top athletes because they don't want to be forced to live in dorms with other students when they could have an apartment with other players on the team. I know, "It's a Notre Dame thing" and there's something to be said about how ND handles this, but if you honestly ask yourself, "Is this really what makes ND, ND?" I wouldn't lose sleep if they changed it.

4) Oversigning/Academic standards. Coaching at ND is different for these two reasons alone. I personally like how ND handles this, but you're a fool if you think top coaches don't see this as an obstacle. I'm not saying they sell out, but perhaps there's room for improvement.

5) Unrealistic expectations and short shelf-life. ND has gone through numerous coaches and the fan base, in general, seems to think that anything less than 10 wins is a complete failure. The masses get riled up, the pressure cooker is turned on high, and the coach bolts. Why would a Gary Patterson sitting comfortably at TCU making $3.5 mill, Cutcliffe sitting on a pedestal making $1.5 mill, or Chris Peterson making $3.5 mill ever want to leave the comfort of those jobs to coach ND for basically the same money but with alot more expectations and alot more hurdles? It doesn't make sense.

I think ND has the ability to be a great academic institution AND have an elite football program, but they just refuse to allow it to happen. If they make some small changes w/o completely selling out, it's possible. But until then, regardless of who is coach, I think ND is cemented in upper-mediocrity with the occasional magical season.

Thoughts on this?

Edit: To be clear, I don't think any one of these is a major problem. I just happen to believe that it's a cumulative issue. One isn't a problem, but all of them building on each other...yea, I think it's legitimate.

If this is the case, I'm clenching my sphincter.

If he leaves....please....please....find a way to get someone bigtime. Cowher, Gruden, etc. are probably out of the question but...someone.

You said Willingham. I assume you meant Wittingham.

My choices would be Wittingham and Mendenhal.
