Not related to rankings, but ESPN's bowl projections have ND either playing UGA in the Peach Bowl, or vs Washington in the Fiesta Bowl. Last think I want to do is play UGA in GA two years in a row... I'd love to play anyone else in GA though..

Don't want the playoffs. At all. We would get stomped. Can't we (for once) go 10-2 and get a soft(er) team in a NY6 bowl? Finish the year off on a really positive note? The last thing I want is a mediocre ND team slipping into the playoffs at 11-1 and getting absolutely housed by OSU or Alabama destroying all of the positive momentum.

I'm not so sure that ND gets in at 11-1 at this point. They would certainly be a part of the conversation, but our SOS has taken some huge hits this year already. Our second half is beginning to look rather light:

USC has looked like hot garbage in just about every game they've played, save the 2nd half against UNLV.

FSU is a train wreck

NW is abysmal.

Pitt and Navy's stock hasn't really moved, they are what they are; will play us tough no matter what.

Syracuse...yes, Syracuse...is looking like our toughest out in the final 6 games.

11-1 argument aside: I would take playoffs no matter what. I don't know what other bar you want to achieve as a team, and what else a fan would want to witness. No matter how you think it would turn out, I think anyone who would root against that outcome is kinda nuts.

I'd put ND somewhere around 12-15 in the Top 25. The defense is very good, but the offense is not Top 10 quality. And no matter how good their defense is, they're going to wear down as the season goes on from the sheer number of snaps they've had to play because their offense hangs them out to dry.

If we win I say ND holds at 8 unless the offense shows something more than what we have all see thus far. Don't really see us dropping if we're 4-0. If we can progress each week and not have any crazy injuries I see this teams ceiling at 11-1. I'm going to assume 10-2 with accepting nothing worse than 9-3. By the looks of the teams on the schedule I do believe 10-2 is pretty realistic. 9-3 would not surprise me too much though.

This is crazy talk. Each year I want playoffs...period.

I see both sides... I fully believe this team has literally zero chance of winning the playoff this year, no hyperbole. So I get not wanting to get embarrassed on national television yet again without payoff. On the flip, if getting into that mix gets us some recruiting momentum then so be it.

If you frame it as "Pick One":

1.) Make the playoff this year with no shot at winning it and most likely getting destroyed in prime time
2.) Make a big bowl like last year with a real possibility of actually winning

I lean strongly towards option 2.

Give me playoffs - there is always a chance, even if it means hoping for the other team to hand it to you.

I think we are as deserving of a Top 10 spot as anyone. After the top 4 (Bama, OSU, UGA, Clemson) you have a ton of teams that are like us. We move up until we lose, until then get in line. Our defense is good and our offense needs to figure some stuff out. I still have hope our offense can be above average to even good.

50/50 chance we are either #6 or #7 behind LSU - and LSU doesn't deserve it IMO. The Stanford/VT stretch will tell us if we deserve to be there or not. Once we get that first loss we can fret over how far to drop.

Exactly..........you'll get more pub being part of the playoffs than you ever will in a NY6 game.

We stayed at #8, with Stanford moving up to #7. Works for me. Take careLots of football left where someone is going to stub their toe. Always happens

I wouldn't mind a repeat of 2015 where we're in the mix all year until the very end and get a NY6 bowl. I'd like to not play OSU this time though.

Outside of the Top 4 I am not scared of anyone. Haven't seen Clemson play so maybe they are more a function of the easiest schedule than anything but Bama/OSU/UGA are three teams I would not buy a ticket to watch us play.

We'll be 7th, but we should be 6th. Clemson should drop to 10. They were losing before their QB went out, at home, and took a huge come back...

Already pumped for next week. LSU gonna lose as well.

Somewhere between 4-6. Seems like a down year...not that it particularly matters. This year appears to be Alabama>>>>>>>>everyone else.

I hate to whine, but I will....
Bama gonna break everyone's balls.
My wet dream is they lose somehow @LSU, and then vs UGA in the CC and don't make the final four at all.

On ESPN's wrap up show, Joey Galloway had ND at #5 in his top 5 teams for the Playoffs. Jesse Palmer had LSU at #5 instead of ND.

Adnan gave a helmet sticker to Book for his 4 TD performance.

I think it's going to be hard for ND to ascend past #6.

Realistically, I think ND -- based on subjective resume + eye test -- should be behind only Bama, Ohio State, and Georgia. LSU also has good wins. I truly don't know what Clemson has done to deserve their ranking besides have their name and the presumption of dominance.

Book will be CFB's darling if he continues. He's got one prime time road game, then two should wins, then a NW road game that could be medium prime, then another two should wins before USC... ND passing game could be a huge conversation.

Tomorrow's Top 25 Today: Notre Dame makes a move to top five of college football rankings
Chip Patterson CBSSports.com

The primetime slate during Week 5 was the kind of stuff that helps voters get a better picture for the national landscape. At one point there were a half-dozen games going on at once with ranked teams in the mix, and three of those games were between ranked teams. After all that action to wrap up a busy day for the top 25, the new college football rankings are going to get an update.

One of the most significant adjustments will be the arrival of Notre Dame to the table of national title contenders. The Irish welcomed both Michigan and Stanford to Notre Dame Stadium this year and walked away from bthwith wins. Now 5-0 and surging with Ian Book entrenched as the new starting quarterback, this year's team is starting to look like one that can make a run at the program's first College Football Playoff appearance.

We still have a few weeks before the CFP Selection Committee starts unveiling its rankings, but it's no secret that we don't see too much differing of opinion at the top of the rankings between the committee and the equally human voters who make up the AP Top 25. How voters react to the Irish will be a preview into what the selection committee might think when comparing Notre Dame against the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Clemson. Given the style points -- looking explosive on offense and relentless on defense against a good Stanford team -- I think the AP voters will move Notre Dame to No. 5 in the poll.

But pointing to Notre Dame as a playoff contender is as much to do with the schedule remaining as the body of work or profile to this point. The product on the field has been impressive, so much so that it looks like there are very few teams left on the schedule that will be considered less than a touchdown underdogs to this Irish team. If this recent quality of play continues, Notre Dame could be one of the last undefeated teams in the country and very much in the playoff race. For now, they'll make a jump in the rankings.

Here's how we think the new AP Top 25 will look on Sunday:

1. AL
2. UGA
3. OSU
4. Clem
5. ND - We weren't expecting to see the Irish look as dominant as they did, and while it's worth considering that Stanford ran out of gas that would also be a nod to the incredible depth on display from Notre Dame's defense. Book was great, Dexter Williams looks explosive in his return, and this team is ready to start putting together a playoff argument after Saturday's win.
6. LSU
7. OU
8. WVU
9. PSU
10. UK
11. UW
12. STAN
13. UCF
14. AUB
15. MICH
16. WIS
17. MIA
18. TEX
19. UF
20. ORE
21. MSU
22. CU
23. BSU
24. USF
25. BYU

Details on each team at the link above.

out of those ahead of ND, only LSU plays two of the group. The SEC will likely get two again. OK has an easy road. OSU has an easy road. Clemson has an easy road. This could be the year an 11-1 team gets F'd.

Three takeaways from No. 8 Notre Dame’s big win over No. 7 Stanford | NCAA Football | Sporting News

by E.Jay Zarett Omnisport

Notre Dame is a CFP contender
Notre Dame should be considered a strong contender to reach the College Football Playoff after its victory Saturday.

The Fighting Irish has put itself in position to run the table as it has already beaten two ranked opponents, No. 14 Michigan and the Cardinal, on its way to a 5-0 start.

Notre Dame will not face a team currently in the top-25 the rest of the season and is scheduled to play just three more true road games in 2018.

With a dominant defense and an offense that can move the ball, Notre Dame has a chance to make it through its regular-season slate unscathed.

I think VT might get back in the top 25, briefly. Syracuse could if they don't lose again until they play ND.

VT and Syracuse are all solid teams that could pop into the Top 25. NW, even at 1-3, could end up running the table (if they get past @MSU next week) and popping in late in the year. USC has a clear path to get back in the game and get to the PAC CC. Home vs Colorado, and road vs Utah all their only challenges till a late home game vs Cal... We will have an opportunity to have beaten both teams in the PAC CC IMO...

USC doesn’t scare me they are weak up front and if you get pressure on Daniels he either makes a stupid decision or throws it up in the sir praying his receiver comes down with it
