So, there has to be more to this story than just an EJ Holland twitter post, right? I'm a leacher, so I don't have premium access, but to warrant that type of response from ISD was there as post on BGI or something?

Someone correct my timeline, but he comes to II, gets an offer, takes a visit to Michigan, two of our other top targets commit, he gets the green light and commits shortly there after? The EJ twitter post seemed more of a brag that his Future Cast was correct than some shot at anyone. Even if, and I'm sure it is, it's true that he was close to committing to Michigan, that one visit and thought doesn't exactly give the impression of a real tumultuous recruitment.

Like I said, I just basically read here and twitter (sparingly) so I'm probably missing an entire thread or something. I follow most of the analysts and listen to their podcasts. I can see why some of the vitrol is thrown at BGI, but I'd much rather listen to their pod casts than ISD (both of which are a distant second and third to Irish Illustrated).

Edit: Read through his thread, and it seems the offer was commitable, but was gunshy about his role? Still looks like the other two commits had an impact with how he felt? I guess I don't understand the "shade" being thrown. Both can be true: He was close to not being in Notre Dame's class, but this wasn't a real roller coaster ride of a recruitment.

Welp, all of my favorite writers are with the Athletic, now.

Staples was the lone holdout (and Spencer Hall, but he doesn't write much anymore, so he doesn't count).

I guess I should subscribe once Fall camp starts.

They're paying everyone to write for them. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain this.

Cheap like me! My SiL subscribes and forwards the ND articles to me.

I subscribed to the Athletic for a year for an introductory price and did enjoy it. I cancelled my subscription thinking they would offer me a discount to come back (rather than pay full price) but it's been 2 months and still nothing. Very unusual for a sub-based site to not spam former subscribers. Idk if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I use the Athletic as well and my only complaint is that there isn’t very much ND content produced.

I used it for my pro teams and fantasy sports so I wasn't looking for ND content but I thought there was a handful of articles every week leading up to and during football season.

They have a very good writer - Pete Sampson - covering Notre Dame football full time. He doesn’t write every day, but probably had four or five pieces a week during the season. Maybe one or two/week - mostly profiles - in the off-season. They also have a stable of top-notch national writers.
Generally speaking they seem to go for quality over quantity, but what they do, IMO, is very very good. Happy subscriber/reader for ND, national CFB, and my Boston pro teams.

Athlon

So I'm trying to catch up on cfb podcasts waiting out the summer and on the Athlon podcast they were still moaning about ND in the playoffs instead of UGA. Those guys just will never give ND an ounce of credit. Last year, they also were pushing the argument that UM was better than ND and it doesn't matter that we beat them. Unsubscribed. came here to vent.

Hopefully the coaching staff play that sort of thing to the players for three weeks leading up to the Georgia game.

BGI could use some mature voices on their Friday podcasts. It sounds like a wannabe frat party with the outcasts trying to talk cool to get in.

Theyve been putting out the 40 &50% off spam this week. I re-upped for 50% off yesterday. Big fan of the content. CFB, MLB, NFL all solid. Not a ton of ND articles, but Sampson does a nice job. Not the most plugged in recruiting & team wise (I get that here mostly) but still quality sports journalism. Worth $5/mo to me.

What is so great about the Athletic? Obliviously it's great so I'm not challenging it. Is it a great site? Are their articles/writers just more talented than everyone else?

It's quality sports writing (and the occasional video, I think) catered directly to your interests, and without worrying about dumb banner advertisements or auto-play ads, since you're paying for a subscription.

They basically hawked all of the best national college football writers, and made really good choices in hiring team-specific beat reporters, too.

You can set up your Athletic home page (web and app) to feature only the sports or teams that you want.

I have the app, and though I don't have a subscription, I check it for the three free articles per month. I have it set up to only show me ND football, UC football, Bengals, and Reds content, and it is awesome.

I subscribed earlier this year and really like it. The only small issue is just the amount of ND content that is produced. Since it's basically only Sampson, you don't get as much stuff as some of the other sites. However, the quality overall is excellent.

I subscribe to The Athletic not because I want to voraciously read their content every day, but because I think it's criminal what was done to sports media throughout this country over the past 15 years.

Fox/ESPN laying off quality journalists left and right to pay big salaries for blowhards like Skip Bayless and Jemele Hill. Ads everywhere. Terrible bloggers being paid peanuts to produce horrible or click-baity content. Zero research, no objectivity, all hot takes.

The Athletic said "we are going the polar opposite direction." And it works! I probably read 2 or 3 pieces a week on my favorite teams, and it is quality journalism. For example, the play breakdowns Sampson does with ND players going over what they saw on the field during the play. The one with Julian Love is truly fantastic.

So supporting The Athletic is supporting everything that is right with journalism. Do I need to spend the $5/month or whatever it costs? No, but that's 1 beer worth of money and I don't need to drink the beer either.

Are you saying he's already moving on to something else? His choice? Seemed like he got everyone excited during the heat of recruiting season.

Now it's official:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Personal update: Had to make another BIG move 👀 <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/GoBlue?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#GoBlue</a> 〽️ <a href="https://t.co/AhSOA1MzKC">pic.twitter.com/AhSOA1MzKC</a></p>— "EJ Holland" (@EJHolland_TW) <a href="https://twitter.com/EJHolland_TW/status/1163474139774160897?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 19, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Classy move to say something true for once on his way out the door... Michigan is definitely a "better fit" for his personality.

Lol, I don't understand anything he's intimating besides he disliked reporting for ND? Or disliked the rest of the reporters?
