Asking because I do not know and if it's just Manti, I don't buy it.

Is Pollan actually a great recruiter or did he just work really hard on Manti, obviously got him, and was announced the title of ace?

I love the anti replies to Briles. Who would u go after then? What I get from even interviewing him is that ND is not fucking around anymore and are committed to winning games. I commend them for that.

Just a few questions. Who is Kendall Briles, what is he about and whats his history? Also, GB stated that Elko may be bringing his LB coach. If that happens what do you all think/hope will shake out regarding Gilmore and Elston I think there would be a few possibilities. Elston could be moved to TE coach, as that was his former position at Cincinatti if I remember correctly, and Gilmore could remain the DL coach. Elston could be the new DL coach and Gilmore could get pushed out. Elston could end up a DC assistant or some type of assistantt coach and everyone could stay put. Or Elston could be let go but I REALLY don't see that happening as not only is he a good recruiter, but he's also always seemed to be a good coach and long time staff member of Kelly. Thoughts?

I'm on board. He's young and can recruit Texas, something we really haven't had.

Polian helped reel in some other big name west coast kids. He also served as a recruiting coordinator and ST coach under Harbaugh/Shaw at Stanford.

I would say he's a very good recruiter. He picked up a lot of West Coast talent, like Crist and Clausen, as well as occasionally hitting places like Florida and Texas. He also brought in Kyle Rudolph.

Yessir. My thoughts as well. Baylor hangs up crazy points and so could we with some different play calling. Love the Elko and Polian hires and I think the players and recruits will and do as well. Let's get us a fancy new OC and get after it! I'm hoping that maybe one of Kelly's stipulations to attract a heavy hitter OC is that he will have say or full control of play calling. I think nest year Kelly needs to focus on being more of a full team overseer and also full time QB coach with a QB coach assistant. I think he should hand the play calling to a new hot OC. My opinion.

Here's his old ND bio: Brian Polian Bio :: Notre Dame Football :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics

Throughout his tenure as special teams coordinator, the Irish special teams have been some of the best in the nation and recorded some of the top marks in recent school history.
Notre Dame has blocked or deflected 10 punts, 10 field goals and two PATs since 2005.

The Irish have returned three punts and one kickoff for touchdowns as well as scored on returns off of a blocked punt and blocked field goal and also on a fake field goal.

Four times in the last four years, Notre Dame's kickoff coverage team has forced a turnover and the Irish have recovered two fumbles on punt coverage.

Under his guidance, the Irish have averaged 10.0 yards per punt return while allowing only 7.6 yards per punt return. On kickoffs, Notre Dame's coverage unit has limited opponents to 19.9 yards per return while the Irish return teams have averaged 20.5 yards per return.

Polian has also proven to be a solid recruiter for the Irish as he signed four players in southern California and Hawaii in 2009. He was rewarded for his efforts by Rivals.com as he was named one of the top-25 recruiters in the country and the Midwest/Big 10 Recruiter of the Year by the recruiting website.

In 2008, he helped Notre Dame accomplish something it hadn't since 1988 - lead the nation in a statistical category. For the first time in school history, the Irish had the best kickoff coverage unit in the country allowing only 16.5 yards per return. It was the best yards-per-return average by an Irish squad since 1975 when that unit permitted 14.9 yards per kickoff return.

Notre Dame averaged 21.6 yards per kickoff return in `08, the best by an Irish team since 2002. The highlight of the season occurred in the Hawaii Bowl as Armando Allen raced 96 yards for a TD, the first kick return for TD since Vontez Duff versus Navy in '02.

The punt coverage unit was stellar in '08, allowing only 6.0 yards per punt return, the best at Notre Dame since 2000. The Irish allowed only one punt return longer than 20 yards - a 38-yard return by Stanford. He was instrumental in the development of placekicker Brandon Walker in '08. After converting just one of his first seven kicks, Walker made 10 of his next 11 kicks, including seven straight at one point.

In '07, the special teams units were strong, especially in the areas of net punting punt coverage and attacking field goals.

The Irish ranked 13th in the nation in net punting in '07 at 37.9 yards, marking the second-straight season in which they finished in the top 15 in that category nationally.

The punting combination of Geoff Price and Eric Maust landed 20 of their 76 punts inside the 20 yard line and only had three touchbacks on the season. The punt coverage team allowed an average of just 7.4 yards on 32 returns.

Defensive lineman Trevor Laws proved to be virtually impossible to stop at times, as he registered three blocked field goals, tying for most in the NCAA.

Polian also assisted in coaching the Irish linebackers in '07, focusing on inside linebackers. Joe Brockington ranked second on the team with 108 tackles while Maurice Crum Jr. tallied 84 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss. Price ranked fifth in the nation in 2006, averaging 45.4 yards per punt to set the Notre Dame single-season record for punting average.

The punt coverage unit ranked 11th in the country at 37.8 yards in '06.

Prior to Notre Dame, coached the running backs and was recruiting coordinator at Central Florida. He tutored running back Alex Haynes, who became the Golden Knights' all-time leading rusher - finishing with 3,356 rushing yards and 27 TDs on 742 rushes.

A graduate of John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, he earned his bachelor's degree in history in 1997 and earned a master's degree in education from Baylor in 2000.

A three-year letterman as a linebacker, he was named to the all-Ohio Athletic Conference team in 1996 and helped the '94 and '96 teams to top-10 finishes in the NCAA Division III rankings.

Polian's father, Bill, is the president of the Indianapolis Colts. His older brother, Chris, serves as the vice president of football operations for the Colts. Younger brother Dennis is the assistant to the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

Polian was a contributing author to the AFCA book, "A Complete Guide to Special Teams."

Born Dec. 22, 1974 in the Bronx, N.Y., he is married to the former Laura Maggiotto and the couple are the parents of one son, Aidan Doyle.

I love this. My big knock on Kelly since he's taken the job has been his over conservative approach. Something that was never what made him a very successful coach in the first place. Nothing to loose coach. Get after it.

Here's my plan. Skip hiring Kendal Briles for OC. Instead, install limo tint on the coach's box upstairs, a back service entrance that leads to an underground tunnel that comes out in Michigan and lastly hire AB Janitorial Consulting for cleaning the coach's box.

The end.

My guess would be Briles was interviewed as a Offensive Analyst.

There arent any openings on the staff in any case as far as I know.

FWIW, I'd hire his father as an analyst too if he would come.

Just read up on Kendal Briles. BIG 12 recruiter of the year in '13 '14, OC of the year finalist one year as well as QB coach of the year finalist. Mentored 5 AA over the last half dozen years. Assuming he has strong ties to Texas. Could possibly even sway some '17 recruits. Fairly young. I find him VERY similar to Sanford. Very similar but possibly even more accolades. Show this guy the money and get him going!! Let's get after it! I know we lost Sanford which sucks but we got rid of our horrid ST coach and replaced him with Polian, a massive upgrade, and we filled our empty DC position with a hot DC who is going to install a new defense that I personally think is what we need more than anything in this program. We're going to come out a lot better next year IMO. If we walk away from Georgia next year with a W, I think the ND fan base will be back on his side.

Go Irish

There certainly is openings. We need a QB coach and or OC or assistant in case Dennrock is promoted to OC.

Art Briles , personal problems apart, is the best offensive mind in College Football. His offenses can put crazy points, even without a QB (just ask North Carolina). Really excited for Kendal being a possibility. CAB seems to develop his assistants pretty well (see Phil Montgomery and Dino Babers).

Who knows what they met about or if they're even looking at him for a full time staff position. Could simply be kicking the tires on how to simplify things for QBs or how to play consistently with tempo.

ALL COST. Or do u wanna go 4-8 or 8-5 Pussy footing again?

Oh you're preaching to the choir. I'm all for doing what it takes to win NC's, not games. I say crank back admissions. What's the difference if a kid gets in with a 1100 SAT or a 900 SAT. Both are exceptions. I'd start the School of Sports Society as an ND style Rocks for Jocks curriculum. Train tomorrow's YMCA leaders, Boys & Girl's Club leaders, Youth Sports directors, Get coaching degrees, sports counselling, Personal trainers, sports management, athletic directors with tie ins to athletic trainers and Kinesiology.

I'd set up a sports factory that trains sports minded people to both service their industries and to spread the mission of the church.

Sorry, was really meaning his ability to recruit Texas.

Got 3 this cycle. Would like to see more for sure.

Everyone's so excited, we've got boners and wet pants all over this thread.

I will only add that to me, it is very apparent that JS laid it out very clearly for Kelly.

JS: That was a shitty year, we can't have another year like that.
BK: Yeah, it was bad, worse year of my coaching life.
JS: Brian, If things don't change considerably, next year is going to be the worse year of your life! Do I make myself clear.
BK: Crystal.
