I am pretty positive Elston is being kept because he is one of the best recruiting coordinators in the country and the players LOVE him.. I don't think he is only being kept because he is "buddies" with the HC.. He is valuable to this team

Agreed, but again - why at DLine where he seemingly wasn't getting it done before? Are we now putting full blame for that on previous players/schemes and hoping the Elko-effect will outweigh any Elston deficiencies?

I truly don't remember all of wheels in motion at the time of Elston being moved to LB's, but Elliott was transitioning out of his OLB coaching spot, so BK was faced with hiring a new LB coach OR hiring a new DL coach and move Elston to LB coach since he has coached that position previously.

I don't know how much of moving Elston to LB was dissatisfaction with the DL VS BK thinking that Gilmore was the best person to hire when faced with the choices for a new coach to come on board at one of those two spots.

I would look at Erik Korem from Kentucky if I'm looking for a new strength coach

Then why not move him to recruiting coordinator and give him some general coaching assistant position so that he can do what he is good at (recruiting) and still maintain player relationship while getting out of the way of contaminating the defense?

Elston to DL coach is not a great move imo. We DID want to see him replaced last time, which is why he became LB coach. None of the linemen under him learned a pass rushing move, it was bad. Unless Elston has been learning from Gilmore, a proven D line coach though he failed here, I don't think he'll be better this time.

Wasn't getting it done before? From 2010-2014, Elston coached:

Kapron Lewis-Moore
Louis Nix III
Stephon Tuitt
Sheldon Day
Aaron Lynch
Jarron Jones
Isaac Rochell

Now look......... no one is saying that he set the world on fire, or that he was cranking out All-Americans or first day NFL draft picks every year. But he sure wasn't failing.

From Wiltfong,

He expects Elston to move to the d-line (good move) and Elko will bring Clark Lea with him to coach linebackers. Also, he wouldn't be surprised if Brian Polian comes back to coach special teams.

Where is the link to article/post where you gleaned this information?

I'm not trying to argue about S&C coaches, but let's be real, the SEC plays by a separate set of rules that I don't believe the administration would allow at ND. Would love to be proven wrong, I just don't see it happening.

I dont get it either. Wasnt that the reason they brought in Gilmore? Piss poor DL play?

I thought he was brought in more of a luxury at the time, because he was becoming available, and Kelly had a history with him, I could be wrong, though.

I remember there being a general disappointment with Elston's seeming inability to develop talent along the DLine.

I'm not sure if this has been talked about, or if we'd even be interested. Does WF have anyone commited on defense that ND would want? I see most are just 3 star kids, but you never know if Elko sees something that others may not.

I believe they have a WDE that has been discussed; can't recall the name.

Yup.

1) Sleep more because more free time.
2) Lift more because more free time.
3) Also, you can't compare Tier 1 recruiting with our Tier 2 recruiting. It's easy to weight train Jaylon Smith and Manti T'eo. Guys like Drew Tranquil, recruits with excellent upsides but aren't quite freaks, ultimately have a harder time balancing that speed with too much weight. There are only so many guys who can run around naturally at a weight above 230. When Saban is choosing, he chooses the freaks who can handle it. We need to compare ourselves with other similarly situated programs.

247 stating positive impact on :s::s::s::s::s: DB Derrik Allen with hire of Elko.

...plus having Lyght. Likes how DB's are used in his scheme.

Derrik Allen, Lassiter, Cornerback

unofficially visited ND on Sept 17th.

CB is pointing towards Georgia right now.

You can only have so many assistant coaches and grad assitants on the payroll.. Its not as easy has hes full time recruiter coord, hes full time special teams, Its why so many coaches split roles so cover most ground...

Also... Why would Elston take a minor role when he wants to be a DC and eventually a HC.. You low ball him, and he'll leave... You want him as your RC and so you give him DL or LB which IMO he does a decent job

ISD was saying that he'd be reassigned, which I believe is what had already been posted here from another site. Out completely would be shocking
