I'm quite certain Elston will remain as LB coach and recruiting coordinator. He's been with Kelly 13 years and he's very happy at ND. Also would expect Lyght to remain as CB coach with Elko handling safeties.

If we have 2 DB coaches, I wonder what happens to Greg Hudson?

Well he wasn't exactly a position coach before the season anyhow. I gotta think that BK is gonna find him a job somewhere, whether it be at ND (doubt that highly) or maybe at WKU? I'm really surprised that he didn't have a position coach job for 2016 anyways, because he was never a bad coach.

He's coached the DL the last four years at WF. Most of these guys are capable of coaching different positions. Elston started out for us on DL then moved to LB.

i'm well aware of the coaching multiple positions. But in his bio that was posted there was only 1 position i saw listed.

I was more suprised that if were revamping the D staff why we would put someone in a position that maybe isnt his best. That's all.

In other words, If Cohen is a LB coach at heart, let him be LB's. Elston has done DL before.

Just more caught off guard, but i didn't see he has been DL coach last 4 years. Thanks.

I know the kids think highly of him, however, there needs to someone established on the defensive side of the ball

maybe its a master plan by the players to get Kelly removed. They realize that Elston is a big risk and could fail, leading to Kelly's dismissal.

Well 2 of those 3 have no eligibility remaining and Elston is Nyles' position coach

None of those guys will be here in 2018 (two won't be here in 2017 for that matter), so why would they bother?

Yeah, why I think staff continuity is important. I'd really like to see Elston be listed as co-DC similar to Cooks' role if Elko is hired. We cannot have wholesale staff turnover and expect to be successful... if we replace 75%+ of the assistant coaching staff then we might as well have fired Kelly.

I'm still holding out hope for this.

Does Elko turn down offers from Oregon and Florida just to be a Co-DC here tho?

This rubs me the wrong way. When you're a 4-8 football player stfu and worry about getting yourself better.

Why would Elko agree to that though? It's basically a demotion. I'm sure the Oregon and Florida offers, if they come, are not going to have him be co- anything.

I don't love the idea of a potential locker room issue, but wth does team record have to do with player/coach support?

Not how that necessarily works. Co-DC is just the tile Elston would have. For example, Diaco was the DC and Cooks was promoted to co-DC... Diaco wasn't suddenly downgraded from DC to co-DC. It was just a nod to Cooks.

To answer your question, I don't think Elko is going anywhere where he doesn't think he has enough control and correct compensation so I expect both parties will do what they think is best. I love me some Elko but I only want him if he's happy and willing to keep a majority of the defensive staff in place... which I think he is. Too much turnover and we'll struggle to hold on to our recruiting class or put a good product on the field.

Elster has done a great job as recruiting coordinator and deserves a lot of credit for that. I would hate to see the part get hurt.

I hear what you are saying...but if I'm Elko I would never take a high profile job like ND DC unless I could have the personnel I wanted...Current recruiting year is not my problem. Future success and recruiting years are my problem. I would bring whomever my trusted folks were from the last job, and interview nationally for each and every other slot...ND guys could interview. IMHO, you do not make a difference using most of the same ingredients, and the worst thing in the world is a coach who is feeling like he should have your job, or that their boy shoulda had your job. I'm a gut it, and start over kinda cat.

I see. So then this means no increase in responsibility for Elston? Would hate to see the overseeing of recruiting suffer.

Someone here posted that Elko only wants to bring one person with him. Not sure if that's his actual desire or what was negotiated, but either way it looks like LAX's concern about turnover will be moot.

Just my opinion but the only position groups that I notice always mention the position coach as primary reasons why they committed are DBs and OL. After Booker left Kmet and Wright both said they're committed to the school not a coach. Jurkovec said the same about Sanford. Wright also mentioned he believes the same goes for most of the class which I tend to agree with. But he did say he thought that Pascal would be Irish after the banquet so there's that.

Per Mike Frank: ND has a 'good' shot but there are two other teams in play here, one a big name program with a lot of money.

Not giving me the warm and fuzzies here
He's a doom and gloomer, have to take his negativity with a grain of salt. Besides, odds are he meant Oregon and they just hired Colorado's DC. I believe that leaves Florida as the main competition, but all reports are that Elko wants the ND job and will take it if offered...which I believe he has been. I think we're good here.

I could see Ohio State landing him let's face it

Depends on how well you know who you are. Money probably won't be all that different.

So it comes down to taking the job that highlights who you are.

If you are a program builder, you do yourself far greater good on the way to a HC job to do what you do well...so you rebuild the ND defense. If you are a superior recruiter and schemer, Yea, go maintain what tOSU is doing, etc.
