True, but I don't think they were.
While many of the members of the committee seem to have great credentials and are thought to be measured individuals, most have demanding and high-pressured full time jobs.
I can't honestly say what the committee talks about and how each approaches this task, but I would be extremely shocked if most didn't simply get their info from a few select sources, internally or externally. Add on that most are members of conferences and/or former specific schools, and I'd argue that there is very little that is actually "pure" about the committee's selections, contrary to what were told and lead to believe.
