I was lucky enough to experience the Snake Pit in its glory days of the late 60’s through the 70’s. Plenty of ladies in various stages of undress thanks to the booze. You could always count on one or two cars being left in the Snake Pit like the thousands of beer cans.
Definitely needs to be on everyone’s bucket list.
My first trip to the snake pit was with older cousins either late 70s or 80. The infield was still full of bikers and broads lol... I wasn't old enough to have fun obviously, but it was eye opening. Didn't get to party there till the mid 80s, but it was still plenty fun. Not as many bikers, but still wild.
There are SO many more people at Indy than Daytona. Speedweek at Daytona as a motorsports destination has a lot more to do and it's blocks from the beach.
I've been going to Indy since the '69, I've never been in a bigger mass of humanity than in '16. 350k+ in the stands and on the infield. But honestly, anything over 250k and I lose track. There's only so many people your eye can see at one time.
Mid/late 70s for me (very young). Been there a ton. Been to Daytona a few times. Just different, but both good times. I was at the D500 3 or 4 years ago, and it was cold as hell, which put a damper on things. When it's warm though, awesome crowd.
SO many people is correct and everyone is partying having a great time. I was VIP one year through work - all the beer and food for free in the tent along with many other perks and our seats were right behind Sarah Fischer’s pit. Pretty sweet even though that was a rain shortened race.
Sat at the top of turn 3 twice too. Great seats - can see the whole track.
I think Roger Penske buying IMS is going to be a great thing for the 500 going forward as well.
I've had all kinds of different experiences in Indy. I've went red neck'n and pulled kegs in on wagons, had police escorts and VIP treatment, but all were fun. I think I preferred the red neck experience to be honest lol. In Daytona last time, we got golf carted in with a retired driver and exec over merch. Hung with several drivers at the merch camp for a few hours sipping whiskey.
