Great game by the boys -

All my opinions -

Cons First:

First drive when Book was scrambling - they showed replay from end-zone behind Book; receivers were not in a rush to get into open space for Book. This has been a problem all year. The WRs seem to be loping around - not sprinting across the numbers.

Running game is not bad when it is not 'telegraphed' to the defense. My neighbor's 9 year old son on a few occasions said, "hand off".... and Irish was stuffed. Even on the third-down play(s), OL pushed the undersized Navy D out of the way - why not on designed run plays? IMO, too much pulling the tackles. Run the f'ckn ball straight up the middle.

Second-string - C'mon man... should have scored at least twice against that beat down, frustrated, tired defense.

Pros:

Book, Lenzy, Claypool and Bilal was ready to play ball today.

Lea had the D ready. Sat off the O-Line enough to shoot the gaps

Turnovers made the difference in the first quarter to make the second quarter look great. (whole game for that matter)

No broken, lower extremities on D

Last:

If BK plays out the 1st string through the end of the 3rd - the score is 67 - 13 ........ EASY. But, it's Navy and BK has never been one to do something like that.

Welcome to my first and only complaint about the best CFB coach in America.

Brian Kelly needs a new coat.

Now for the others....
We saw Urban Meyer interviewed earlier this week and he said: "we watch the opposing coaches". It turned into something peewee football coaches hadn't done since the 1970s.

BTW. this is all side note material and you don't need to quote.
Cocaine Is terrible for the septum part of deviated.....
I wouldn't recommend any Irish fan to partake/

How did we do with injuries today? I haven't had a chance to watch the press conferences or anything.

Circa, did you drink more than me today?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At one point today, ND scored 4 TD's in 7 snaps I believe. Nice. They also scored on all 7 of Books possessions. Also nice.

Here's what happened:

ND scored first

Navy Lost 4 fumbles that ND scored 28 points.

Game over.

I thought Navy was going to pants Notre Dame? Would you like your crow served hot or cold?

Yeah I mean I was completely wrong about how that game would go and took a hit to my pocket book on it too. I thought ND could win but it would be close, and I thought the most likely scenario was ND not scoring enough and losing outright.

Book and Claypool just lit the field on fire. Was beautiful to watch.

I hope we get clarification on #3 some how. Today's performance is perplexing to say the least.

I don’t have this 100% confirmed, but I think Tommy has been calling or at least has had a hand in calling plays the past two weeks. I was told after Michigan that Long might lose playcalling duties because it was a “forgone conclusion” he would not be back next year and there was a lot of consternation one that side of the ball. I don’t know who called plays for VT, but I assume it was Long and maybe that was the last straw.

Again, this is rumor mongering and while someone of it I know for sure, I definitely do not know for certain who was calling plays today but I have an educated guess. Regardless, that is what the offense should look like.

If this is the Book we get the last two games, in the bowl game and in 2020, then sign me up. I’m not sure what clicked but the last two games have been damn impressive.

He’s been fun to watch. Not sure if it’s a change in the play calling, Book improving, or just not great defenses, but whatever it is I’ll take it.

NO ND coach has ever hung 60 on Navy.

Only 3 ND coaches scored 50 points or more on Navy in a total of 9 games. Ara was the first ND coach in '70, 56 points. Holtz did it 5 times scoring 58, the most ND has scored against Navy, in both '93 and '94. Kelly has done is 3 times.

He’s been fun to watch but I also think these last two defenses have been pretty bad.

Sure, but he should have been doing that against Virginia, VT, and a host of others this year and last but wasn’t. Now he is. He looks like he’s finally gotten over the hump.

#3, I was thinking this myself after the Duke win. Something has drastically changed with this offense, and it feels like a shift in the playcalling. Either Kelly has taken the reigns, or Long got his head out of his ass.

The facts are this is just not a great running team this year. We're better off passing well to setup the run. This happens in cycles with Kelly's team. Part of it could be the injuries to the OL and RB has hampered their ability to develop a rushing attack. On the flip side, when Book and Claypool are clicking they're extremely dangerous. Along with Lenzy to take the top off the D, it keeps them honest and it opens up running plays later.

How did we do with injuries today? I haven't had a chance to watch the press conferences or anything.

IIRC Jayson Ademiola & Shayne Simon looked to have the worst injuries...both knees

On the VT comment: No. One should not expect to drop 45 on Bud Foster in 7 possessions. Should ND have won 34-21, sure. VT's 7-3 and have DB's that run in the 4.5's... not the 4.8's like Navy.

Thank you for this info lax. I hope you don’t mind me asking but who are your sources for this inside information. If you feel like disclosing please PM me.

We all know how high a football IQ Tommy has. And if he truly is coming up with offensive game plans and calling plays...well kudos to him for job well done.

I suspect quite a few others share your characterization of the past two defenses as pretty bad particularly as Duke gave up 42 points to Syracuse today.

But according to Brian Fremeau's DFEI Rating through Week 11 (results prior to today) that's not accurate. Navy was actually the 3rd Toughest D, ND has faced and Duke was the 4th.

https://www.bcftoys.com/2019-dfei/

ND and ND OPPONENT'S 2019 DFEI Ranking Through Week 11 (not including games of 11/14)
#4 UGA
#7 UM
#13 ND
#25 Navy
#32 Duke
#39 USC
#59 VT
#65 UVA
#73 Stanford
#85 UL
#107 BC
#121 NM

Based on those Ranking ND, Book, Claypool, et al should have big games against BC, #107 next week and then against Stanford, #73. It would be even better if ND had the 2 missing OLs on the right side and a running game.

Thank you LAX. I put in a call to a connect as well who would only say "they have made some changes" but wouldn't go into detail. He's always been spot on (even though he's years removed), but just isn't a guy to give detailed dirt. Anyway, he's a no BS guy and I trust him.

Assuming it's true (either Long lost it, or Tommy is doing more), it sure ups Reesus's stock (I was already high on him), and gives me a new found respect and understanding of Book's ups and downs. He clearly displayed he doesn't have a noodle arm...

Ok I'll spill on who's calling the plays:

Lea is pulling double duty, calling the plays on offense and coordinating an amazing defense.

Tommy Rees calling plays uncredited would be the ultimate full circle of an underappreciated all-timer

It seems almost obvious that play calling changed at some point either for the Duke game or at the end of the VT game. It's gotten back to what this team's strengths are, as oppose to continuing to smash the ball on the ground when the opposition is loading the box. I guessed that Kelly was calling the plays, but if it's Rees that would be pretty interesting. I wouldn't put it past him to be an offensive guru, it was always said he was a gym rat that only lacked the athletic ability to really capitalize on it. If it's true, how many people were calling for Rees to get canned?

Lol I’m just giving you a hard time. I also lost money on the game. I took Navy +10. I thought Notre Dame could win but it would be single digits. But I’m glad they played great gave me a stress free Saturday two weeks in a row!

You’re theory of who was calling plays the last two weeks is interesting. This is clearly a different Book and the Book we’ve been waiting to see. Deep balls are there, the ball is coming out fast, and he just looks like a QB who has true command of the offense. Could it just be the confidence he gained with the game winning drive against VT? Maybe. I don’t think it is that simple. I think there was a change made inside the Gug. Not necessarily a new play caller.

I think the main difference was ND receivers getting separation against Navy. That’s it.

VT was down to the last 2 CBs on their roster, and had a defense ranked 88th by advanced stats at game time.

Out of respect for Long.....If LAX is right, which I think he is, I would expect to see Long, "accept" a new position during the off-season.
