How far was he away from qualifying on the first test? Do we know? If so, how?

I don't think the public knows, but I'm operating on the assumption that it's generally pretty hard to improve your SAT score by a good amount. And from how staunch GB was about how theirs other reasons why he can't go to Stanford academically.

Thanks. I would have been shocked to learn we knew his scores. I just think someone at Stanford must be giving him hope or he would not have retaken the test and pushed back his announcement. Especially since it seems he has cancelled his Georgia visit and has blown off Bama so many times. I could be wrong, but that's where I'm at with this saga. Either way, I'm with Bogs -- I am very happy with this class with or without DRob. I'd love to have the kid on the team, by my interest in following the ins and outs of this recruitment has run its course.

I doubt that the SAT 'floor' for football players for Stanford as opposed to ND is that different. The difference between a score that gets you into ND and one that gets you into Stanford is probably pretty small. This could come down to random variation.

Some poster on 247 with alleged Stanford connections said Robertson hasn't even completed the 5 essays required by Stanford for admissions. Can anyone confirm they require these? Anyways, they also speculated that he had to raise his SAT 80-100 points, and that along with the essays would be considered.

I know someone in the midst of the college apps process; word is Stanford has the one "common app" essay -- 250-650 words that many, but not all schools, require (meaning he probably has that one finished already), then three short 250-word Stanford essays. That's not much. 80-100 points isn't, by any means, impossible to improve, esp. if it's just one section that needs improvement. There are prep courses, as you probably know, that give tips on improving at least 50 points or so.....Of course, who knows if his previous scores were with or without those prep courses. I suspect this one gets away.

Random variation might count for 40-50 points.

My understanding is that ND sets its admission standards for athletes such that the minimum is what they hold to be the threshold for success at ND. In other words, not setting someone up for failure because they're unable to handle it. I would be surprised if Stanford was any different in this area. Non-STEM majors can only get so difficult.

This is all accurate. Like I've been saying, he hasn't even submitted an application. He is months past the deadline for everyone else. They're making huge exceptions to even consider him.

This isn't an exception like Notre Dame taking Aaron Lynch with a bad ACT score. This would be like Notre Dame taking a convicted drug dealer who did jail time. They are so laughably past what Stanford does for everyone else it is hilariously hypocritical. Shaw always runs his damn mouth about how much harder their standards are than everyone else and how they NEVER compromise... and then they bend over backwards making incredible exceptions for a 5:s:. You are watching Stanford sell their soul, remember this moment.

First, if ND was not in the mix I wonder if Stanford would be doing this.

Second, are you saying that lowering SAT floor to where ND's is would be selling their soul? Or just making exceptions to rules they have (rules that are not themselves essential to running a clean program, they just happen to be the rules)? Playing Tree's advocate here.

It sounds like the exception is just, "if you do it late, we'll still accept it." But they don't expect him to.

I'm not sure its the biggest accomodation if they make him do it all. Now if they just waive it and take the SAT score, that would be a big deal for the Trees...

I think he's talking about exceptions with regard to application and visit schedule, not scores.

I'm not sure how long it's been since his last SAT, but I had 3 months between mine and I raised it 160 points, total.

But that was some prep, opposed to essentially none. And the first time I was on my death bed with a nasty flu, but already paid...

Anecdotal evidence, of course, but given the circumstances, it's certainly possible.

I'm more interested in the "other stuff" and if it's more than just essays.

This is a bit much, no?
There's a difference between bending deadlines and bending standards. Deadlines are somewhat arbitrary. Yes, Robinson ideally should have a qualifying SAT score in hand already. And, yes, their application deadline was, apparently, January 3.
But if he re-takes and qualifies, he still has a qualifying score, even if it's a few weeks late. That may be a compromise but it's nowhere close to admitting "a convicted drug dealer who did jail time." (weren't we recruiting one of those - a running back from Colorado? - a year or two ago?)

Every single school in Division one makes some kind of exceptions.

Time to move on. Great to get him, but I am certainly not counting on him.

Take our 23 and move on. Our recruiting class is right on par on how we finished the season. Recruiting has played out just like we played this year.

Just coach them up, and achieve the best out of the talent we can.

We have a very real chance of landing an elite athlete that would instantly improve our offense. We really have nothing to lose. Either he comes here, very likely, or he doesn't, also possible. You don't gain anything by just moving on.

Again, a lot on here are severely underestimating our chances here.

Why would we move on when his recruitment isn't over yet and we're SQUARELY in the race, if not the front-runners? It's one thing to say let's not lose any sleep over this, but move on? Just makes no sense to me.

What else the public may not know, if you improve your SAT by a significant amount (probably less than what is needed in this case - logic is to sway a school like Stanford with their policy and procedures, it would have to be nearly earth shattering!), there would immediately be an NCAA investigation. The crawling through your briefs kind, which would include taking apart a prospective signee's entire high school transcript.

I say good luck to the kid if he wants to be a Tree that bad.

I really respect his goal setting and desire.

He may have missed his deadline but at least he can't say he didn't try.

And thats life. That teaches a life lesson. And whether he succeeds or fails, he learns something very important from this in the end.

The runner-ups offer great things too. ;)

None of this is really that hard to accomplish if you just put some effort in. Especially if the initial SAT score was low. When do his SAT scores come out?

Are you guys too shallow to get the metaphor? What's the problem?

Stanford is making exceptions here that they literally have never before made in the history of Stanford football. So picked an unthinkable comparable for Notre Dame.

I have no problem with them breaking all their rules and protocols and making these exceptions, but I do have a problem with the fact that every year Shaw gets up there with his holier-than-thou attitude and talks at length about their restrictions and how they don't make exceptions like other schools. It's fraudulent, at best.

So if that's right he presumably would commit to Notre Dame on 2-11 if he doesn't get the score he needs. If he does get the score he needs then who knows.

I honestly hope he gets the score and then makes a decision because I'm not going to root for a kid to fail academically. If he goes to Stanford, so be it.

I'm kind of this line of thinking as well. Wish him the best. Still hope be ends up at ND.

Are we even sure they are making exceptions though? Don't most think this is all a pipedream on Robertson's end?

Good for him. Take your time. Working hard to get admitted to a top educational school. We harp on kids who take the easy way out.

I don't give two shits about Shaw. I don't give two shits about Stanford making an exception. ND has made exceptions.

Tip of the cap to Demetris.

Holy crap is this one of those mythical Stanford fans?

And yes, Stanford is FAR more selective than Notre Dame... they have a much larger applicant pool, especially among international students. Selectivity isn't always a direct measure of the caliber of student, for example USC is more "selective" than Notre Dame but has students with objectively worse academic profile. Same can be said for many Ivies... lower acceptance rate, worse ACT/SAT scores.

With regard to Stanford, I think it's fair to say it's both though, because while ND takes students with comparable test scores, that's only part of the picture.

Back in 96 my daughter applied to ND, USC, Vandy and IU. ND is the only school that didn't accept her.
