2 coming off surgeries (1 of them his second, both to knees). bunch of sophomores.

If we can add a grad transfer cb we should be taking them.

Watkins is healthy and ready to go. Kelly said Crawford is one of the fastest healers he's ever seen. Will be ready to participate in individual spring drills. But they will be cautious and keep him out of contact drills. Also said Durham Smythe looks fantastic. Best shape he's ever been in.

Fastest healer sounds like injury prone. I'd rather never find out how well my guy heals.

He heals really well, but has he improved in the "not getting hurt in the first place" department?

Whatever bubble wrap they put around Tranquill, they need to pass on to Crawford

Might be next to impossible to do some kind of research on this, or maybe it has been done already... I would love to see how one is "injury prone." Is there DNA evidence that says one guy is more likely to than others? Can we quantify that based on XYZ in his physical makeup that playing a certain sport, even a certain position, a player is more likely to be injured? Really could be some interesting finds if possible.

There absolutely has to be something in the DNA that makes certain guys more injury prone.

The Tranquill brothers both have terrible knee ligaments that are prone to blowing up. It would be an interesting study to analyze the failed ligaments from both brothers to see if there is some degenerative trait in their DNA that makes the tissue more likely to fail.

Or else that's just an incredible run of bad luck going on in one family.

They both have had two major injuries and both have healed fast. Don't see any difference.

Give him a red jersey to wear during the spring.

I meant that Tranquill blew his knee up twice, but made it through last year fine.

Whatever they did to keep his ligaments healthy, they need to do the same with Crawford now.

Also, it was a joke in the first place haha

Drue is much slower and i don't think he trusts his knee or he just lost his explosion...he was able to move for a guy his size and now isn't close to being what he was.....exactly how folston looked....hesitant, no explosion

No idea about the bro

Attachment points of tendons and ligaments, bone structure and general anthropometric differences, stress of the CNS etc can all have an effect on injuries. Prior injury is also the biggest indicator of injury. On top of dysfunctional movement patterns paired with overuse of certain movement patterns can also help.

Yeah. People always talk about "it's in my genes" to have bad knees or a bad hip, or something. But I would love to know what exactly causes that, and how much of it is Nature vs Nurture.

Can Science Predict An Injury-Prone Future Draft Pick?

For example, recent research suggests that an athlete’s range of motion can predict future injury at the joint, while other scientists have shown that joint laxity or even posture can influence future trips to the disabled list. Most surprisingly, it now appears that a seemingly harmless injury in one part of the body—the hamstring, for example—might predict a devastating injury in another part, like the ACL. So passing a pre-draft physical may be only part of the story. It's also important to remember that given what's riding on the examination, players may not be entirely honest during the pre-draft physical.

Nearly 30 years ago, the Portland Trailblazers famously selected Sam Bowie instead of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft after he passed his own pre-draft physical. But Bowie went on to spend the majority of his professional career injured and later admitted he'd been dishonest about the extent of his injuries leading up to the draft. In an ESPNU documentary, Bowie said of his pre-draft evaluation, "I can still remember them taking a little mallet, and when they would hit me on my left tibia, and, 'I don't feel anything' I would tell 'em. But deep down inside, it was hurting. If what I did was lying and what I did was wrong, at the end of the day, when you have loved ones that have some needs, I did what any of us would have done."

Running Doc: Is being 'injury prone' just an old wives' tale? - NY Daily News
Injury prone is a real phenomenon. I have patients that seem to never get injured and others that are regularly injured. There are iron men in the NFL like Eli Manning and Brett Favre who have never missed games and other great players like Tony Romo and Jason Pierre-Paul who never seem to put together an entire season due to some injury coming up. I have always thought “injury prone” is real yet there is no science to back it up.

The science has come through and recent researchers are beginning to find that DNA makes some people more injury prone. Dr. Stuart Kim from Stanford University’s genetics department recently published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine a study acknowledging the genetics basis for this conclusion.

Dr. Kim is not alone. Another study published as far back as 2009 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicated a gene called COL1A1 that is linked to the possibility of more soft tissue injuries like ACL and Achilles Tendon tears.

A healthy and upperclassmen Watkins shouldn't be discounted going forward. I've always been high on his talent, and I thought the last time we saw him play, he did well against a dangerous OSU offense. Hopefully he really pushes himself this offseason.

Slightly drunk, but really happy with this class. #11 ranked and we went 4-8 with a head coach everyone knows won't be here past 2017. This class should be ranked like #34. ND really does sell itself.

Same

Minus the drunk part...heh

Would not be surprised if he's a starter next year.

First off to stay positive really nice with the o line and TE haul. I think the days are gone of getting defensive kids who fit the culture of Notre Dame --sad but true it will be just try to out score 'em again and again. My real comments are these tasty items- 1 Harbaugh is really killing Notre Dame on recruiting and just see how many more Midwest kids he gets once he starts drilling us on the field. And they will drill us on the field. 2 How does Ga get kids from Philadelphia/NY NY and places all over the country-sounds like a little Ole Miss action to me. Their coach knows the ropes after helping to run the semi pro program at Alabama. Yeh man national signing day with all its hoopla-its just nasty dirty and gives the impression that there is a %^$# of a lot going on behind the seen that we know nothing about. Grab a hat kid and get ready for your NFL evaluation.

We'll see on Michigan. Harbs will get his players...BUT, harbs is not an easy dude to get along with...guessing you'll start to see some cracks in staff and players by 2018. Those 5 stars...yea probably not used to harbs type of "love". It looks Rosey over there right now...but we'll see after this year if he can control himself. He'll always compete on the recruiting trail...but we'll see if he finishes with the players he brings in.

I like the sustained stat line the new ND DC has put together. He has a year to get things ironed out before ND plays Michigan. Wimbush would have a year on him, EQ and ADAMS may still be around, tight ends deep...Oline might be bumpy...Dline, really who knows. I'd lean Michigan right now, but man lots can happen. Looking forward to watching the defense play like they understand WTF they are doing, and still have SOME scheme you dial up some shit from.

This is usually what i think when I watch the Little League World Series. They make it seem like it's just a bunch of kids running out there and having fun. Gone are the days of a local group of kids making it to Williamsport. Now they are playing year round travel leagues, parents and adults try to manipulate the boundaries in their advantage, and the money that goes into the kids for training and what not is off the charts.

Recruiting has become the same thing. It's no longer a kid making a simple decision of where to go to college and coaches visit once or twice. It is now a full on year round process starting their freshmen year of high school, combines, and "How can I be remembered" and "how can I get more out of this experience?" Signing day is definitely not the "feel good" moment that ESPN wants it to look like.

My great grandfather sponsored the first little league team after some 26 businesses said no....

Briefly positive up front. Haha.

I think the recruiting haul comes down to what many have mentioned but it seems to elude ND season after season. Winning. They need to win during the season and win in bowl games, like against Ohio State. Win 10, 11 games a year and make it to the playoffs every other or 3rd year and that type of sustained winning will reap rewards in recruiting. Not a secret. Harbaugh is doing it in Michigan because he's been able to turn the program around in a short amount of time and has them-Winning.

If we have 85, or even 83, players on scholarship by the Temple game, I'll eat my hat. My oldest and nastiest hat. For better and for worse, the numbers always seem to work out just fine.

This is a particulalrly young team. I wonder who would leave?

“There’s a lot of preparation that we do in regard to keeping our kids healthy, and again it’s part of a total program of philosophies that everybody has to buy into, starting with the head coach.”

One of the first steps when a player enrolls at IMG is the strength and conditioning staff attempting to identify muscular deficiencies and imbalances.

“Then you take that information and you design programs so that kids are least likely to get injured,” Wright said.

“For example, when a kid comes in, the first thing we’ll look at is hamstring strength. Then we’ll look at quad strength. If there’s an imbalance there, it’ll tell you there’s a greater risk of injury, either through pulls or strains. It also tells you if there’s an opportunity for someone to get faster, quicker.

“When the hamstring and quad strength is equal, you’ve got a player who’s least likely to get injured and most likely to be his optimum when it comes to speed.”
****************************************************************

So, maybe a combination of DNA and physical/S&C development?

Two things have come up for me in the last couple of days, and I wonder if you all notice the same things.

First, since you just interjected strenghth and conditioning in this thread, how many programs have a Coordinator move from running a strength program to 'long term disability?'

Doesn't that seem weird? It doesn't seem the school did anything to shore up the staff in the short term, when there was obviously a significant problem?

And did anyone else notice the last two commits, I love 'em both, the timing with which both called was just too perfect, right in the middle of BK's presser? And they had a camera ready to go for BK off stage? Give me a break!

The most important thing is we got these guys and the new staff is really doing well from the start. But the theatrics? Do they really do anything for you?

I truly believe you are looking for conspiracies where there isn't any... Kelly gets accused of not caring about the kids, or not having time for recruits... This time, recruits call him and he takes the call and people scream its a publicity stunt. The people who don't like Kelly will find reasons to hate on him.. The people who love him will defend him and the people like me, just wish we can stop taking shots at our program and coaching staff and instead go back to making fun of Michigan and USC

Sad, but true. The new rule is you can play in any Little League within your school district. Recently that met that the town I live in has been completely gutted, as all the good players from it (and another town) now travel to a third town within our school district. They then put all the "all star" players on the same team (well not all since that unfair, but 7 out of the 12 or so) so they can play with each other all season before districts.

I talk to some of my basketball players I coach in Jr High, and they all play travel ball. One couldn't pitch all last season because he nearly blew his elbow out 2 games in. Too many parents want their kids to "be the best." In a way that's admirable, but they are going about it in a selfish and dangerous way.
