2018 Alabama Football Recruiting: National Signing Day Eve Primer
18: 15 Signed (five of who are enrolled), 8 to go?

GOOD CHANCE:
The general thought is the Tide takes two of the remaining three wide receivers. However, they could take all three.

Jaylen Waddle WR Houston, TX 5’10”/165 ****½ - Favored over TAMU
Justyn Ross WR Phenix City, AL 6’4’’ / 197 **** - Favored over Clemson.
Jacob Copeland WR Pensacola, FL 6’1” 188 **** - Fla, the team to beat.
Patrick Surtain Jr. DB Plantation, FL 6’1.25”/199 (247’s #6 overall player) ***** - LSU seems confident they will get him.
Malik Langham DE Huntsville, AL 6’5.5”/269 ****
Bobby Brown DT Arlington, TX 6’4’’/282****
Eddie Smith CB Slidell, LA 6’1”/180 *** - cousin of NCG hero DeVonta Smith.
Vernon Jackson ATH (likely LB) Boling, TX 6’3’’/240**** - Flipper?
Michael Parker TE Huntsville, AL 6’6’’/230*** likely blueshirt or greyshirt.

50-50:
Nick Petit-Frère OT Tampa, FL 6’5’’ / 260 ***** - Looking like Fla.
Quay Walker OLB Cordele, GA 6’4”/220 **** - might flip to Tenn or UGA.

How Texas can close out the 2018 recruiting class
The unusually large number of early enrollees means that Texas can take a large class this year — there are currently 24 pledges and the Longhorns could take 32 recruits since seven can count against last year’s class. Including the current commits and wide receiver Reggie Hemphill-Mapps, who will reportedly transfer, the Longhorns currently have four scholarships remaining for the fall.

Things that only I care about:

Cincinnati low-key put together a monster recruiting class by AAC standards. Beat out Oklahoma for a very good RB today, and should be adding a 4-star TE shortly.

https://247sports.com/college/cincinnati/Season/2018-Football/Commits

If Denbrock figures out the offense and finds an answer at QB, this is a class that wins the AAC in two or three years.

Ben Bryant throwing to Meechi Harris and Alec Pierce should be money in the future.

Just as a tie up for three programs I know of after signing day.

Alabama - 20 Commits (Jarez Parks grayshirt). They stand at 86 scholarships right now. Far and away the lightest the Bama roster has been in recent memory. Saban has carried sometimes up to 95 players in the off-season so look for some transfers in and them tapping into the grad transfer market. Also, virtually the entire staff changing over was a sign of the recruiting losses that were occurring. Brian Daboll was apparently an awful recruiter as OC and Saban brought in the polar opposite this year in Locksley.

Stanford - 14 Commits (Tanner McKee LDS mission). They stand at 79 Scholarships today. Stanford is different because they have extremely low attrition and very high use of the Redshirt Seniors staying on their roster. With that being said, they do lack depth at a few positions and are definitely lower than they'd like to be. A 20-22 person class was the goal and it simply failed this year. They also don't take transfers into their program with any type of frequency because of their academic restrictions.

Ohio State - 26 Commits. They stand at 89 Scholarships which is the same number as Notre Dame (without Jimmy Byrne, Dan Cage, CJ Holmes). Tremendous depth at almost every position in terms of sheer numbers. They are a little light at the DE position but they have NFL starters so its okay. Probably going to move up in the team talent 247 rank to #1 for next season. It'll be interesting to see if they can back up the talent.

It's amazing that a talent like Jarez Parks accepts a greyshirt, just to play at Bama.

Reps. I'll add three more programs.

Clemson -17 Commits with five five stars and seven four stars. That star power ranked Clemson's '18 class first in the ACC and sixth nationally. Nine recruits are early enrollees, all counting towards '17 since the '17 class was 14. Their scholarship count is at 82. More remarkable is that nine of those eighty-two are walkons awarded scholarships last year and carried over this year (3 are STers). Clemson signed the #2 OT, but only three of their fourteen OLmen ranked better than twenty-fourth over the last four classes. Seven have ranked 55th or higher. Dabo has in the past sent out late offers, and may well, of course, complete his roster by giving out more scholarships to walkons.

Michigan - 19 Commits. This class was always going to be smaller than the two previous ones of 30 ('17) and 28 ('16). Their scholarship count is at 87. This class has bodies, but the blaze that marked the past two years at NSD was not even a sizzle this year. The ESP brought in sixteen of those nineteen. Michigan struck out on NSD. The last three were three stars. The class ranked twenty-first nationally and had one LB, no DT/NTs, 1 WR (unranked at his position), and two OLmen. Of note, Michigan redshirt fifteen of last year's class of thirty. They could add a talented graduate transfer, Calvin Anderson, OT, from Rice, who is reportedly down to Michigan and Texas.

Florida State - 21 Commits. The last four FSU classes average 22 commits. With Taggert now in town, gone are the days when their scholarship count just before fall camp was in the upper 80s. FSU's scholarship count is now 82. FSU has the usual Early Entrants to the draft (5 this year). Two players left in December, transferring. Another three were not on the roster before NSD, of whom two had lingering medical issues. The strength of this class is at WR, DB, and DL. It had no QB and the RB is ranked 17th at his position. But after last year's with three RBs ranked in the top ten and two were redshirted expecting another top ten RB is ridiculous. Twelve players of '17's class of twenty-one were redshirted. Their class ranked eleventh nationally despite the coaching turnover, but was only third in the ACC behind Clemson (6th) and Miami (8th). The last time FSU did not have the top ranked class in the ACC was 2008.

Clemson QB Recruiting

SR 4* Kelly Bryant
RS JR 3* Tucker Israel
RS SO 4* Zerrick Cooper
SO 5* Hunter Johnson
RS FR 4* Chase Brice
FR 5* Trevor Lawrence

Just put this up because 4* Taisun Phommachanh from Connecticut is apparently leaning towards Clemson heading into his return visit this weekend. I mean hats off to the recruiters at Clemson, but how can no one out recruit this school when they have this depth chart? That is the reason why they are competing for National Championships year in, and year out. Unbelievable depth chart.

I also think some team is going to love getting Hunter Johnson as a transfer because I don't think he's staying at Clemson. Zerrick Cooper & Trevor Lawrence are probably both ahead of him.

I'm kinda surprised that he hasn't transferred yet. Is there any chance Hunter beats out Bryant? And Lawrence is definitely the future of that program

The bolded players are really the only relevant ones. And Bryant is only relevant because he's the starter. It's not like all those guys were huge recruiting wins. Only 2 of the players listed were top 200 recruits. Between Bryant and the non bolded players, the highest rated recruit is Cooper and he was a 235. For comparison, Avery Davis was rated 246, so that's like comparing coming in behind him.

I just don't look at that and have the same feelings. That is not the depth chart of some juggernaut QB recruiting team. For example, USC in previous years.

They have two studs and a bunch of "meh's", purely from a recruiting ranking perspective. And for comparison sake, when we start fall camp with BW, Book, Davis, and Jurkovec, our average overall composite rankings of our QB's will be higher. The average of our 4 will be 223. The average of their 6 is 313. That's with Lawrence being #1 overall.

I wonder, actually. How long did Houston Griffith have his early ND commitment tweet up before promptly deleting it?

Isaiah McKenzie's commitment to ND seemed pretty quick. Even the beat writers were confused if I can remember correctly.

Obviously a different situation.

Elite 11 Finals start today. I'm interested to see how it impacts QB rankings (especially if Mertz is going to make that visit this month).

Interesting to see Isaiah Williams go to the Elite 11 finals. I thought he'd be an elite slot receiver, but I'm not sure what Illinois has him pegged as. The dude is a 5'9'' QB which idk if that works in college. Also, I think Zach Calzada will turn some heads and move up in the rankings. He'd be the number 2 realistic target I'd go after behind Mertz for ND.

Don't look now, but Purdue just landed the best kid in Detroit out from under Harbaugh's nose. https://247sports.com/Article/Four-...ue-Boilermakers-football-recruiting-118694992

If they hold onto to Karliftis and land Hunter Johnson and David Bell, they'll be a legit force to be reckoned with.

They're gonna need more than a couple of 4 star players. This is a program that has won 10 games once in 123 years and that was nearly 4 decades ago.

Brohm's an improvement over Hazell but he didn't work the magic that Tiller did coming to PU.

The production that this d-line has week in and week out will hopefully attract some more big names in the future.

Chris Steele CB from St John Bosco, who recently decommited from USC, has a top three of Florida, Oklahoma and Oregon. He has OVed the first two. Steele is ranked as the 6th best CB by 247.

Oregon, ranked 4th in 2019 class recruiting with 22 commits, is not missing Willie Taggart. Should Steele choose to stay on the West Coast and commit to Oregon, he would be their second highest rated CB. Oregon has a commit from Mykael Wright, #4 CB.

Oregon also has received a CB commitment from the number 1 JUCO CB, Elijah Blades. Both of Oregon's starting CBs are Sophs.
