totally disagree with Knopfler, he never surpassed SoS, but that's my opinion...

Clapton??? (the artist I have dropped in this thread more than anyone)... well two things... of course he has many songs (most all of them) where he showed his mastery much more, but show me one where the two played together... that was my point (he has also said he loves just jamming with other artists, even if that means taking a step back, much more than doing the virtuoso thing many times during his career so yeah, not a big deal) ...

also, you can make some case for 'better example of" for just about every single artist dropped here so...

You a certainly entitled to your opinion.
Nothin' from DS gets me more pumped than Money For Nothin' but that is in no way a great feat of musical fusion...haha

Yeah, Clapton has done some fantastic collaborations.

Having a good jam session can be better than sex. Once I get the set list of the duo I'm involved in built to about 3 or 4 hours I will start hitting up some bluegrass jams and whatnot...those are a BLAST...whiskey, cigars, great music... One of my cousin's 5 or 6 bands have a 2 time PA state fiddle champion in it...she is sick

Clapton is a great guitarist but i always found his stuff boring. He is great when working with someone else. His solo stuff does nothing for me. I can't stand the Eagles. I truly struggle to understand what people see in them.

I'm gonna assume they have fans on this board so i will ask what is it about these bands that you love? Looking for real reason, not just they rock. I hear them mentioned often as great bands by both fans and critics but i just don't hear it.

The Eagles
Van Halen
REM
Social Distortion
U2

as opposed to bands that are popular but just suck
Green Day
Journey
Stone Temple Pilots

well you answered your own question by putting them in different categories...

for me I'm a HUGE Clapton fan... Derek in the Dominos is the best SOUND ever imo... like the Eagles... love U2...

REM and Social Distortion?? I'm with you on them... I never got 'it'...

so, on Clapton,... I like chill music that also has some testosterone to it... call it 'edge' or whatever... basically I like music that if you want to take a nap to it you can... if you want to rock out to it and get all amped up... air guitar to it you don't even need to change the song, let alone the album or artist(This should explain my love of blues)... THAT is Eric Clapton... take songs like Steady Rollin Man, Mainline Florida, his many verisons of Crossroads, Let it Grow, I Shot the Sheriff, Let it Rain, Before You Accuse Me, .... so many songs that you can take either state of mind to, all while the guy proves his musical talents on the guitar and as a singer/songwriter... then there is his mastering pop music with Blue Eyes Blue, Tears in Heaven and Change the World among others... so many great songs... the guy has nailed so many genres... His live stuff is unreal. THE. BEST. EVER. imo...

U2, basically the same thing... Van Halen, great rock... but only really good for that mind set... not a huge Eagles guy, but love some of their songs... basically for the exact same reason I explained for Clapton and U2

basically, it's all what you like... I used to love rap... now it all just jumps out badly as so childish and stupid with little musical merit... doesn't mean it doesn't appeal to some... to each their own

P.S., aren't you Mexican or some sh!t like that??? I thought it was some law with Hispanics that you must love The Eagles and listen to Hotel California as much as possible... kind of like white people and Free Bird........ :)

Agree. Ive never liked those bands and didn't get why they were so "it".
I like some tracks by Green Day, they got some creativity and uniqueness. Same with Journey, Separate Ways is nice.

To me U2's Bono has an annoying voice.

And, of course, no musical thread would be complete without an appearance from Molly Hatchet's "Guitar Army"....

lol. Good call. Saw them live at what must have been a reunion concert about 10 years ago. That song was used on a nintendo (or whatever the hell game was popular that long ago) NASCAR game.

I put them in different categories because i wont say they suck, just that i dont get it. Unlike the separate category of just suck.

Clapton's solo stuff is boring to me. Love Cream and other collaborations, Yardbirds etc.
The Eagles should probably go in the suck category, it has no redeemable value to me
REM, corny to me, i don't get whats so great
Van Halen, cornier
Social Distortion i also find boring
U2 wishes they were the Clash

Which is why i wanted fans to explain what they like about them. Like you said Clapton has had some good solo stuff but overall he sounds better when working with someone to me.

PS you're probably more Mexican than i am now go watch Glen Beck for more conspiracy theories.

Being an "old school" guy, my tastes have always been with guys like the Stones, Zep, Clapton, etc., and others of that age. Then, I started searching backwards to the roots, not forwards. When Prince came out, my wife kept raving about him and I never paid any attention, cause I thought he was just a talentless little freak. Until I saw this video. Man, can this guy play.

Nice Find Nanker!

Prince was straight sick in that. I'm thinking he went over board & pissed some people off, but who cares when you're that good!

Prince. Little Richard ring a bell?

Prince certainly is a talent and helped so many others have some success. He sure liked to push the limits...

Hey, Neutered, never thought about the comparison between Prince and Little Richard. Good point. Here's my favorite from LR--"When she smiles, the beefsteak get well-done." Now, that's hot.

I could never pick one. Even if forced to.

If you don't pick then that means I chose one for you.

haha
That'll work
We used to do crazy drunk karaoke to this one.
If I had to choose RIGHT NOW
it'd be Justin Townes Earle "Harlem River Blues"
That's my song of the day...but my song changes everyday.

Just to ruin what little respect I have on this board: Thomas Tallis' Spem in Alium. Music meant to take the listener to the Gates of Heaven. Well, I told you. You think more about stuff like that when you sail past 70. Peace youngsters---enjoy all that testosterone while you can---try not to hurt yourselves.

Boss, don't fib. That's not what you told me in Private Message, or the song you sang last night on Leno, dedicated to TheFlyingAlamo. It was this one:

Hah!! Neutered, your nose is growing longer than Pinocchio's. But in that same vein: it reminds me of a song that I'm sure was dedicated to you: "You're never gonna get it." En Vogue.

So is my whang. But My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) by En Vogue is not exactly my "go - to" song. Reminds me of testicles lost. And limbs. And libido. And, ooh Boss, you get me so mad...But at least my booger maker is less than Lady Gaga's...

I like Sade: (Sorry for the ad at the start of video).

Well, your CIA past is showing, trying to mislead us into forgetting that the "lady" has had her nose bobbed. But you can't fool us West Virginians [Lady Gaga was born just "down the street" from Wheeling. This creates much debate in the state as to whether we are proud of that.]

YouTube - Spem In Alium and Ely Cathedral

I'd not heard this before. Reminds me of the the good parts (were there any? Really?) of all those Novenas and 40 Hour Devotions I knelt through on a bad knee.

For me it's a toss-up between these two:

In The Hall of the Mountain King, Edvard Grieg
YouTube - Edward Grieg: In the Hall of the Mountain King

and Not Fade Away/Goin' Down The Road, The Grateful Dead
YouTube - Grateful Dead - Not Fade Away--Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad (4-5-71)

In a pinch I'd opt for Grieg since the music sends me into a head thrashing, body twirling frenzy without the accompanying emotional psychodrama of the Dead's combination of tunes.
