"Woman of Straw." I was flipping through Prime and saw this and thought "Why not?" A 1964 film with Sean Connery and Gina Lollobrigida (rawr). It has a Hitchcock-lite feel as it follows the same trajectory as many of Hitchcock films that starts off as a standard melodrama but that the seamy edges start to creep further in as the movie goes along. Connery's role is interesting as he plays against 007 type as a scheming playboy who hates his wealthy uncle. Ralph Richardson plays the uncle as an impossibly mean-spirited SOB who starts to turn a bit human with Lollobrigida as his nurse. Richardson should have gotten an Oscar nod; you go from hating his guts to feeling sorry for him at film's end. It's not an incredible movie and goes along a bit slowly, but it's a good watch if you like those classic early 60s movies where people wore designer suits while drinking martinis on spacious balconies all the time.

It looks good but based off the trailers it’s going to be way more Hollywood than band of brothers and the pacific. Hopefully I’m wrong
Austin Butler sounds like he's still playing Elvis lol. But our boy Barry Keoghan never misses so its gotta be good

I started watching "The Continental" on Peacock. It's surprisingly not good. The production values are solid and the action is very similar to the "John Wick" films but none of the characters are involving except for Mel Gibson as the current head of the hotel for hit men. The young Winston character doesn't even have an English accent. I got about 30-40 minutes in and turned it off. I may take another run at it but it did not impress the first time out. The show's creators are not able to do world-building that is actually interesting as opposed to being tedious exposition.

Just like Bruce Willis type stuff lately. Gotta keep the health insurance going.

Anyone seen and can rate Reptile?
It’s fine. Del Toro is great of course. Plot seems like it’s going somewhere more interesting than where it ends up.

Whoever the cinematographer is is going places though. There are some really slick compositions that caught my attention. Visually it’s great for a Netflix movie.

Watched Dead Reckoning with Bogart last night. Not talked about like many of his movies but pretty good. It's rated 7 out of 10.

"Leave The World Behind"

About the grid going down, and that includes all electricity, wifi, electric cars, chips....

Guess who had this catastrophe included with his list of books of the year in '21?

Also, this same man had many notes that changed the script throughout the process of making the movie... Including why the simpler versions wouldn't work...
Hint... his initials have a smell to them....

Kinda like the Contagion movie that was 10 years prior to Covid.

Went and saw “Godzilla Minus One” yesterday afternoon… had the theater to myself lol.

Really fucking good. Not just a “monster/kaiju doing monster/kaiju shit” movie. A legitimately intriguing human story where Godzilla is **an** antagonist, but not **the** antagonist.

A story about Japanese post-war reconstruction, a failed kamikaze pilot trying to make up for not achieving his “honorable death,” a woman left alone to care for an infant, who was also left alone.

All of it ties together with the impending threat of Godzilla on his way, where the characters have to grow and solve their own problems and the Japanese citizens have to take control, as the US and Japanese militaries won’t get involved for fear of stirring up more global conflict.

Also: Godzilla is fucking scary, super badass, and takes legitimate damage. Not like in the American Hollywood movies where he’s hurt but ultimately fights back and saves humanity in a roundabout way. He is a killing machine that isn’t interested in some natural balance. He just wants to kill.

I've been watching a bunch of feel good comedies lately

Eastern Promises: Disappointing. Viggo Mortensen is great but I don't need to see his dong and butthole. The ending feels abrupt and not really finished.

A Most Violent Year: Not really that violent at all. It was okay. I guess I was expecting more a mob type movie.

Out of the Furnace: Good movie but depressing. Christian Bale is great. Casey Affleck is good. Woody Harrelson plays a great redneck.

Leo: Watched with my 7 year old. She liked it. I dozed off for half of it. It was kinda funny at times. Good movie for kids. Adam Sandler and Bill Burr do the voices of the lizard and turtle.

Renfield: Pretty funny despite Awkwafina being in it. She can ruin a wet dream. Nicholas Cage is over the top goofy but it works in this movie.
Evil Dead Rise: Has the gore of Evil Dead without any of the fun.

Violent Night: Santa killing bad guys? Eh. It's not as fun as you'd think. David Harbour is good, the little girl is tolerable, but the rest of the cast sucks, especially John Leguizamo.

That director has talked about wanting to direct a Star Wars movie. Seem like a good fit?

Really enjoyed Renfield. Expected a goofy movie based on the limited trailer, but was still somehow surprised at the way things went. I'll probably re-watch at some point.

If you enjoyed Rogue One, then yes. I could see his direction in terms of "the ramifications of war on the common man" thing translating really well to an "Empire vs Little Guy" story.

Only reason I wouldn't go full [amateur score] 10/10 on "Godzilla Minus One" is because I honestly could've used another 15 minutes if it meant one more scene of Godzilla smashing shit. The movie was already 2 hours, so probably appropriate length, and another destruction scene probably didn't fit the tight narrative they were working with, but seeing a true monster Godzilla on the loose just wreaking havoc, rather than America's "he's actually the hero" Godzilla, was pretty fucking cool.

The budget for "Godzilla Minus One" was also super low... I'd imagine the director could do some super cool stuff in the Star Wars universe with a Hollywood budget.

Just finished 2013's American Hustle, loosely based on the early '70s Abscam sting operation. Great cast and phenomenal acting. Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Louis CK, Jeremey Renley, and a cameo by DeNiro. I thought it was a little murky and wandered at times, but good and worth the watch.

I can’t believe it was 10 years ago. One of the few movies I’ve seen in the theater in the last decade. I thoroughly enjoyed watching some of the best actors of our time. Bale is as good as it gets.

Maestro.
Meh.
But should get an academy award for makeup... the prosthetics used to make Beafley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein was incredible.

"Napoleon." It was pretty underwhelming. Joaquin Phoenix did okay in the role but it wasn't anything special as a performance. The look of the film was very drab and the visuals didn't pop off the screen. There were two impressive battle scenes nut most of the large-scale action was not that engrossing. For the caliber of talent involved the movie just didn't deliver.

Agreed. Went to the theater to see it and wasn't overly impressed. Not a bad movie but expected more.
