Another LSU domestic violence allegation

Another LSU domestic violence allegation

Former LSU player, NFL prospect arrested on domestic charge

You may remember Elliott Porter from when Les Miles changed his offer to a grayshirt just before fall camp and to re-enroll in January. Porter, a lifelong LSU fan and who had been committed to LSU for a year, went to Kentucky, then came back to LSU.

" According to the complaint, Porter threatened to harm himself, his girlfriend and their young child after a recent breakup. The records also indicate that prior to the December incident, the couple lived together in Baton Rouge, where the victim said she suffered physical and emotional abuse. "

His lawyer's defense:
- There's no proof of any wrongdoing
- It's a "he said, she said" situation
- Porter wasn't even in town

Another battery charge? Another domestic violence arrest of a LSU player? I'm shocked.

P.S. Former LSU football player Quinn Johnson arrested in Ascension Parish attacks

"Accused of repeatedly attacking his girlfriend over a month, former LSU and NFL fullback Quinn Johnson was arrested last week in a series of domestic disputes that the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office described as turning increasingly violent and ended with him pulling a gun on the woman."

Dan Mullens is glad to get everyone back for spring practice.
On Spring break, QB Dak Prescott and two other players were beaten up.

Another player was arrested in his home town on possession of marijuana.

A couple of days later an offensive lineman was arrested for simple assault by the campus police occasioned by a snowball fight on a snow day.

The victim has alleged that he was assaulted by two other players.

That has to be a new record. What has it been? Two weeks since the last arrest. That's like a decade in SEC time.

On issues over spring break…

Dan Mullen, Head Coach, Mississippi State: “We always tell them to behave, and we want to develop them, however it was spring break. They were away from campus. Some of the guys went to their hometowns, and others just all over the country. There were a lot of different things going on, and with the two incidents we had, we could not control that. I mean you can lock them in their house, but they are kids, they want to go out and want to have fun. Dak was with friends and De’Runnya was at home. You try to get guys to make good decisions, but they are college kids.”

MSU kicks off spring football practice

Mullen suspends and dismisses players accused of domestic violence the same day. (one player, 6/28/13 & another player, 11/21/14). One player accused of burglary was suspended (April, 2014) and graduated two months later. Driving without a license (October, 2013) drew another player a suspension - but he played in 2014. We'll have to see if what punishment other than suspension happens as a result of possession of marijuana (1st string WR) and whether the two defensive linemen are arrested for assault.

Mullen did oversign The Class of 2015 will add two WRs, 3 OTs,5 DEs, and 1 NG at those positions. MSU's Sept schedule does include S. Miss, LSU, NWern St, and Auburn.

"

Many Tide fans were upset Taylor had been recruited and signed.

Some folks you just can't save from themselves. Taylor turned out to be one of them. Saban's dismissed him from the team. As for Geno Smith, I'm thinking his chances of staying on the team after his second dui are probably below 50%.

Below fifty percent?

This is ridiculous, right?

Not because of Bama vs ND, but the fact that he needs to get his head on straight, and two DUIs are not evidence of someone thinking clearly. He needs to be booted. I would be surprised he is on the team, at all.

I'm betting a two game suspension, because Geno got one game the last time.

Saban said in 2013 (from article above):
"We've never had an issue with Geno. He's an excellent person. He's never been in trouble here before, never been in my office for anything. But I think this is something that everybody should learn from, that when you make a bad choice sometimes the consequences of that choice can really have a negative effect.

"Some of these guys don't have enough foresight to understand cause and effect, but Geno has been a really good person in the program and just made a choice, bad decision. Made several of them, so now he's got consequences for it."

Was he behind the wheel for any of the times he was busted? I do not believe so, but I could be wrong. I thought it was three times for underage drinking, which is also bad, but when I hear about someone getting plastered and then getting behind the wheel, that is a much bigger issue, because you are operating a loaded weapon, essentially.

Wasn't Floyd in one altercation back home and subsequently charged with under age drinking?

And his last charge, as I remember, he was behind the wheel, but not driving when he was arrested.

Every case is different. Depends on the circumstances and whether you feel you can help a kid turn it around and learn from his mistakes or not. In Smith's case, it will depend on whether Saban thinks he's a kid who can learn from this and start making better decisions and whether remaining with the team will be what's good for his life & future, or whether he's going to continue making bad decisions and keeping him around just delays the inevitable. This is one of the tougher parts of being a HC.

Saban gave him some rope after the DUI in 2013, but spoke highly of him (see quote above). Certainly, Smith is a different case than Taylor, Kamara, Tenpenny, the Skittles Four, or Freitag.

We'd be naive to doubt that Smith assuming a starters role at a position Alabama is thin at will not be taken into consideration.

But nine arrests of players in the last sixteen months does not reflect well on Saban's decision-making either. The oversigning does help mitigate the subsequent transfers, though.

I think Saban said he's not getting kicked out.

Anyways, Saban got absolutely crucified by the media at large yesterday. People will forget about this soon because he wins. It's very interesting to me the latitude afforded by some college programs with regards to domestic violence vis a vis the NFL's current stance. The main driver for the NFL is image and sponsors... whereas college teams know they have loyal fans built in. It's what allows Oklahoma to take on someone like DGB and to let Mixon stay in school for slugging a girl in the face worse than Ray Rice.

The worse look are the idiotic fans who don't get it. It's a minority of people, but the internet really brings out the worst sometimes and then amplifies their message. Some of the stuff on Bama's 247 site right now is jaw dropping.

Clearly taking a chance on Taylor turned out badly and looks like a foolish decision in retrospect. Bama talked to a lot of people from Taylor's life, set some very strict guidelines for him, and made him participate in weekly counseling sessions as a condition of his getting a second chance, but it still wasn't enough.

There are kids at many, if not most, programs who are second chancers. Hard to know which ones are going to make the most of that opportunity and which will make you regret ever learning their name. Sometimes it works out well and you can be proud of a kid who turned his life around. Sometimes not. Was giving Taylor a chance at Bama a bad decision from the start or was it just one of those calculated risks that didn't work out? I don't know. I think it will make Saban gun shy about ever taking a chance on a troubled player again.

Saban should get what he deserves with the whole Taylor ordeal. His first mistake was taking Taylor to begin with. His second mistake was trying to justify it yesterday in his presser. His ego is way down the list of things we should care about. Saban knew the risk with Taylor... he owns the outcome with Taylor. Man up or shut up.

I doubt whether Saban will ever look at the media and at Alabama fans and say that he made a mistake. It's a tragic flaw in his makeup and in his decision-making in recruiting. Alabama is in the elite position that they may choose among many of the nation's bluechip recruits.

Taylor could have gone elsewhere. Alabama could have had a scholarship for Moten or a grayshirt like Parris or a deserving walkon or even kept it for 2016.

He already had a bad track record. If it had been one instance I could see giving him a second change if he met certain criteria, but he already had a second chance. For the sake of the almighty NC, Saban was willing to give him a third chance. He knew better.

Seriously?

Yes. Even Oregon was going to deny admission to Rodney Woods because of a felony (plea deal) on his record. Mile Belotti wrote the judge a letter requesting that the judge reduce the charge to a misdemeanor. The judge did so, and Woods was admitted. But, good lord; no one has less integrity or scruples than Oregon........................ do they?
