And a "never was" is the reason SMU got the Death Penalty back in the 80's. Scary stuff....

I was living in Texas when the SWC self imploded. SMU was turned in by a member school. SMU then retaliated. After that most of the other schools in the conference (or their boosters) turned in each other in a dog eat dog fit of mutually assured destruction. Texas private detective firms were working overtime to get the goods "on the other guys". The "dirt" with corroborating documentation was turned over to the NCAA. If I recall correctly only Rice and Arkansas escaped unscathed.

To juxtapose that with Notre Dame's method, it really is night and day. Ohio State's football and basketball members are housed in graduate-level dorms almost completely isolated from the student body. Notre Dame players are immersed in the college life, including the academic struggles.

Ohio State players are just like the SEC, USC, et al in that they are not students but instead should be considered practically mercenaries.

This is very true. It can even translate to when you are a kid and how your parents treat your activities and successes. Being held up because of something you do rather than who you are is just a recipe for arrogance.

One of the things I think Coach Kelly does, which is awesome, is that he seems to preach that each player is a part of something bigger than themselves. ND doesn't owe you, and it is an honor to play for ND. That is a good way to keep people grounded.

At Tulane people could really have cared less if you were a football player or basketball player or whatever else. It wasn't really elevated at all. That's probably one reason among many that they aren't consistently good. But when I went there they had a top 20 hoops program and it still wasn't that big of a deal. It just wasn't the culture of the school. But Tulane does the same in terms of housing everyone the same and making you go to class and having high academic standards for sports.

So I talked to my former boss who has several friends that work at O$U in the athletic and alumni departments. He said that when he was in Columbus last week he was told by a couple of his friends that Tressel is done at O$U but they were not going to fire him until they could find a replacement. Could be a rumor, but it's a rumor started by O$U staff.

They may burn worse than USC. USC got slammed for lack of institutional control... with all of O$U's countless secondary violations they are close to staring at the same fate.

If this isn't lack of "control" I don't know what would qualify. Especially after their BB problem.

they aren't currently on probation though, at least not to my knowledge, that will be their saving grace... and that's exactly why SC got hit so hard

Though I think they are considered a repeat offender because of Troy Smith and the BB team per the columbus dispatch (Ohio State football: Tressel's deception crux of NCAA's case | BuckeyeXtra)

"However, Ohio State was warned that it might be treated as a repeat offender stemming from violations involving former quarterback Troy Smith, who took $500 from a booster, and former men's basketball coach Jim O'Brien, who gave $6,000 to a recruit."

They were still on probation when all of this stuff with Tressel went down though. O'Brien got fired in the spring of 2006. The NCAA warned in their Notice of Allegations that OSU could be treated as a repeat offender.

Oops, should have read the rest of the posts. pkt beat me too it. Derp.

Highly Touted LB Dorian Bell is suspended for the entire 2011 season, per ESPN:

Ohio State linebacker Dorian Bell has been suspended for the 2011 season because of an unspecified violation of team rules.

Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel confirmed Bell's suspension to The Columbus Dispatch on Sunday night. Bucknuts.com, which first reported Bell's suspension, cited sources who said the sophomore committed a third violation of the same team rule.

Bell appeared in eight games last season as a reserve linebacker but did not travel with the team to the Allstate Sugar Bowl for undisclosed reasons. Bucknuts.com reported he also would have been suspended for the 2011 opener against Akron before the latest infraction.

He competed for a starting outside linebacker spot this spring.

One of the most heralded recruits in Ohio State's 2009 class, Bell redshirted in 2009 before recording nine tackles last season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes refused to specify why linebacker Dorian Bell, a potential starter this fall, was suspended for the 2011 season. The school would say only that "the sophomore committed a third violation of the same team rule." ESPN Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg chimed in, saying "Those familiar with how Ohio State disciplines players can probably figure out what Bell did wrong."

A story by Ken Gordon and Tim May in the Columbus Dispatch, though, spells things out more clearly: "Sources said [Bell's suspension is] believed to be because of a third breach of the athletic department's drug and alcohol abuse policy."

Bell didn't make the trip to New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl for undisclosed reasons, and Bucknuts.com reports he would have been suspended for the 2011 opener against Akron before the latest rule violation. But he participated in spring practice and seemed to perform well, as he competed for a starting outside linebacker position.

According to the Dispatch story, Storm Klein, Jordan Whiting, and incoming freshman Curtis Grant will now compete for starting linebacker positions.

In a related story, Bell was seen showing off a new tatoo to teammates and recruits at the recent spring game. Way to go S*ckeyes!

Break a team rule - get suspended for the season.

Break NCAA rules and lie about - get suspended for 5 games.

Update (for all its speculation, really gives nothing concrete) on Dorian Bell:

According to Dave Biddle of Bucknuts.com, rising sophomore OLB Dorian Bell, who was suspended for the 2011 season by Ohio State, is transferring to Pittsburgh, near his hometown of Monroeville, Pa. "We've confirmed it through multiple sources," Biddle wrote.

If the transfer goes through, Bell would become the third Big Ten defender to transfer to Pitt this spring, following Michigan S Ray Vinopal and Michigan CB Cullen Christian.

However, sources told Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch that Bell has not yet asked for his release, and Jim Tressel texted Dom Tiberi of WBNS-TV in Columbus that he was not aware of a transfer.

Moreover, Paul Zeise of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote: "Former Gateway standout Dorian Bell may indeed leave Ohio State, but there is absolutely zero chance he will end up at Pitt. I was told tonight by several sources that Pitt coach Todd Graham will not even consider taking Bell, who is suspended for next season for unspecified rules violations, or any player who has been in trouble elsewhere. So that should put an end to any speculation about Bell coming to Pitt."

According to Dispatch sources, Bell, a four-star recruit and the No. 32 player in the 2009 ESPNU 150, is believed to have run afoul of the school's drug and alcohol policy three times.

Bell will just go JUCO for a year, then return to the highest paying SEC school.

Rumors are starting to swirl about more stuff coming out in the next few days. The main thing being said is some kind of housing scandal, but there could be more as well.
