I'm sure the FBI did interview him. I don't find that hard to believe at all. Do you believe that he was operating under the supervision of the FBI?
As far as lone wolf or not, it looks like a lone wolf to me, but I also don't really care. I find it weird that people would have a preference. If the FBI says it was a major plot by an organized group I will believe them.
