This whole scenario reinforces to me that ND is not the destination spot for coaches that some of us think/want it to be. I guess I finally realized it after Holtz was run off, and ND waded through miserable hires and public rejections from a slew of the big shot coaches.
First, the ND admin really aren't going to want a coach to be the identifying face of the university. Second, the admin is not going to go toe to toe with the universities that will pull all stops to be FB champion. What other school can go 4-8, sell out an 80K seat stadium, have every game nationally televised, etc?
Losing Elko hurts and puts team/staff in tough spot to find right replacement and finish off what has been a great recruiting year and moving forward with a much improved D. But the reality gut punch is that most of these coaches are in it for $$ and glory, and those are probably easier acquired outside of South Bend.

Opened this thread yesterday morning. Like everyone... I was stunned to read the news. Frustration, anger and sorrow enveloped me.

Firstly, thanks to Mike Elko for all his work and efforts in transforming our D. Much appreciated. I wish him all the best in his future endeavor.

That being said... what might have been had he stuck around for at least a few more years. Cheers and Go Irish!!!

Not sure if this is accurate, but last year Aranda was the highest paid coordinator at 1.3 per year before his huge bump. We offered Elko 1.5, which would have been top money before his new deal. I don’t agree with the way he went about it, but 300k to 500k more per year depending on reports is a huge difference in salary. Looking forward to see how our search goes. Hopefully we find a diamond out there.

I am very surprised that we aren’t hearing anything on the search. I have been checking 247 more than I normally do but they ain’t saying much.

The fact that Lea hasn't already announced that he is going to A&M is a sign that he's at least under consideration for the promotion.

AFCA convention starts tomorrow and runs through the 10th. I'd imagine something gets announced immediately following that if it's an internal hire, and later if it's external and they need to vet.

They only play 4 good teams. Clemson,Bama,Auburn, and South Carolina.

1) I think Kevin Sumlin was better than folks think in making adjustments, and getting the most out of what he had. 2) I said it elsewhere but there are 3-4 teams I think A&M is demonstrably better than (none of the Mississippi teams are on that list). I don't think they beat Clemson or Bama, then they have LSU, Auburn and both Mississippi schools. Out of that bunch I see MAYBE 1 win. Then, Arkansas is in the same boat, but could certainly themselves get that W...I think of the razorbacks as NC state. You know they have the athletes to catch you if you play flat. There are a few games they will win for sure...but if they drop Arkansas and all the others I think they will...that honeymoon will be pretty short.

Again if he wanted to get the big $$$$, he would have been smarter to pick another place IMHO.

It has been discussed that Notre Dame linebackers' coach Clark Lea and special teams' coordinator Brian Polian would be joining Elko at A&M and Polian was the Aggies' special teams/tight ends' coach in 2012 under Kevin Sumlin. Neither of their names in the Notre Dame coaching directory were linked to their individual pages as of this afternoon.

Umm?

Neither is Del Vaughn's, WRs, or Ryan Nix , Football Intern, and Brandon Lemon , Offensive Analyst Intern-Football

BUT, the links for the mentioned coaches other than Elko appear and work at the 2017 Official Roster. Elko has been deleted there.

No way Polian leaves after the tweet he sent out. Talk about not being able to believe in someone. I’ll try to find it.

Further to that, the link for Dave Ballou does still work, even though he was officially gone well before Elko left.

Notre Dame football is bigger than any one player or coach. This is an incredible university with a rich football history and tradition. Coach Kelly will attract and hire a great DC and the improvement made by this team will continue in 2018! #GoIrish

Northwestern State, Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi State, UAB,and Ole Miss is pretty weak.

Not saying they will contend for the West but Dan Mullen left the cupboard full in Starkville for Joe Moorhead. Especially on defense. They should be competitive based on talent & assuming Fitzgerald makes a full recovery.

I wish that was my feeling. The more I think about it, the more I think ND fucked themselves. Finally had a very good DC who could recruit. Any fan of ND knows that is a rare commodity. Other than Diaco’s first couple of years it’s been a steady stream of medicocre DCs.
