I think that if Coney returns next year, this defence is going to be incredible barring crazy injuries.

Losing Nyles is tough, but the Jones should more than keep up, and everyone else has another year of Elko coaching and the opportunity to get stronger and faster under The S and C program.

2018 really does have a chance to be special.

The first game against Michigan should give an idea to how good this D really is

I think Coney will be back given he wasn't a starter. Gives him the chance to show the NFL he's ready.

Makes you wonder about BVG when Elko takes basically the same group of guys and does a 180 with the D.

It helps that Elko allows positional groups to have their own meetings, I imagine

I think that S&C coaches get too little praise when things are good and too much criticism for when things go bad. Overall, some of injuries are just pure luck. I remember when we first Longo everyone loved him. "Longo Beach" and all of that. Are we more conditioned than we were under him? Maybe, but we also run a completely different defense and our guys are more mature. Overall, I don't think a S&C coach should ever get the same amount of credit/fault as an actual coach.

I've read a few articles a while back (sorry no link) that said a S&C coach overall spends more time with the kids than any other coach. The off season and non-practice period contact is vital as S&C are really the only ones coaching the kids. I think they have as much to do as any coach when it comes to instilling an attitude of toughness and work ethic.

Outside of just pure contact components, I'd say conditioning itself is a big big piece of the pie. Our guys haven't looked run down late in the game like years past. We've seen the strength gains (or at least the pics), but I'd say just the time spent (new attitude) and conditioning are enough to give these guys props.

It will be interesting on how they progress and perform against these teams ...

Michigan (damn, I hate scUM)
at Wake Forest
Stanford (I hope that B. Love jumps to the NFL in '18)
at Virginia Tech
Navy (dreaded triple option)
Florida State
at U$C

This was the narrative coming from the coaching staff up until Wake. That conversation suddenly stopped. I am not saying that there is anything bad going on with the S & C program, but we sure didn't look stronger than our opponent the last game and a half. Quite frankly I think we have looked pretty tired.

We looked like we were on donuts last two games, and Miami especially looked like they were on PCP.

It's like as soon as the calendar rolls over into November the team falls apart. It's Science. It's tradition.

We will get a sense of this tomorrow.

Miami in 80 degree weather is a bit of a test to any northern team this late in the year. And despite the heat and humidity it was more an offense collapse than a defensive one.

Love to see the defence play a strong game tomorrow and hold Navy to field goals til the 2nd-3rd string comes in for the 4th qtr.

Wasn't it like 77 at kickoff? I get that it's humid, but 77 even with humidity isn't exactly sweltering.

Totally off topic but did anyone else notice Ed Reed pretending to roll a blunt while celebrating with Miami players?

Next he'll be pretending to chop up lines of coke. It's all part of his audition to be the Dolphins' DL coach.

Wake was the first good QB we faced, and they exploited us. Miami was a mix of they were ready, pumped, and our game plan sucked. They stuffed our shitty slow developing run plays, and made us pay for the crappy pass play calling. Coaching failure more than anything IMHO. I'd love to see them again on a neutral field and decent game plan.

Where? When?

Elko's ND Bio has him at WF for 3 years, '14-'16, BGU for 5 years, '09-'13, and earlier at Hofstra, Richmond, Fordham, Penn, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and Stoney Brook.

Navy last played WF in '10. They last played BGU in the early 90's. And Navy hasn't played Hofstra, Richmond, Fordham, Penn, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, nor Stoney Brook

He did coach against Army's Option in '14, '15, and '16. WF won the first two years 24-21 and 17-14, and lost in '16, 13-21.

Wake won by 12 and 14 in the 2 years before Elko took over.

In '16 when Wake lost to Army, Army beat Navy 21-17.

Navy won the previous 14 contests with Army.

Wondering how beet red Elko's face is going to be in the coaching box cam? It was on fire for the Wake second half. Please be different from every ND/Navy game in history and take it to them.

I think you're locked on the Weis years.

Faust, Davie, and Willingham were undefeated against Navy. Navy upgraded their program with the hire of Paul Johnson in '02 (.608 winning percentage) and upgraded again under Niumatalolo,.653. From 1965 to the Paul Johnson era Navy only had one head coach who was better than .500, George Welsh, .544, from '73 to '81. Even with Welsh they only averaged .462 from '65 to '02. They struggled against the Williams and Mary's.

Notre Dame is (76-13-1) against Navy

Average score: Notre Dame 28.3 - Navy 12.3

It's mind blowing how Nick Coleman and Jalen Elliot will have played an entire year without making a single play.

All while tackling poorly and being bad in coverage, mind you.

Not that mind blowing. They aren’t very good but there is no one behind them, thus the result.

But 2 safeties starting an entire year, and not 1 play? Even if you're bad you have to get lucky at least once.
