Things feel like they are back on the upswing - strong portal additions, bringing back Denbrock and excising Porker from the offense, Golden seemingly coming back, no signing day drama, and a wipeout win in the bowl game. It will be interesting to see if McCullough stays (just a feeling I have, no intel), and what the roster looks like after spring practice. This season will always have you saying what if, but Freeman looks like he is really putting his fingerprint on the program. At this moment, I like what I see.

Jordan Faison is the perfect example of Freeman vs Kelly/Weis/Willingham in roster construction.

When Sam Hubbard was a longtime ND lacrosse recruit and had family at ND, Sam's football coach... who was an established guy at powerhouse Moeller in Ohio... reached out to a number of teams saying "you need to look at this guy, he's an elite athlete and is just starting football but could be a star." Most colleges took time to review his film, some extended offers. Urban Meyer -- who had an elite and talented loaded Ohio State team and certainly didn't "need" some stringbean thin lax bro -- took the time to evaluate him and eventually offer a scholarship. Diaco was too lazy to return a phone call or look at the film. Same for Kelly. If ND has been proactive, he likely would've settled for a PWO spot (money was NOT an issue and he was a high academic guy) and then taken a scholly when the spot became available. The rest is history... Hubbard would go from a 0* recruit to by the end of his senior season a top 150 recruit and eventually 3rd round draft pick // six year NFL vet currently in the league.

Faison similarly was a 0* recruit that Iowa evaluated and was like "holy shit this guy is a sleeper"... he played in an offense in HS where he was primarily a QB and RB. When he came for his lacrosse visit at ND, Freeman and Stuckey pitched him on being a slot WR and really put in a lot of legwork to show that he was valued. He turned down a full Power 5 football scholarship to "play both" at ND because they sold the total package. Freeman had no way of knowing he would be THAT good but because he had synergy with other coaches at ND and because he's a tenacious recruiter he invested the small amount of time that was required to seal the deal with a kid that he had no way of knowing whether he'd even play a down of football. A few months later, he looks like a surefire starter and likely NFL player.

In short -- effort matters. Little things matter. ND has not had a "dog" in the HC role since Holtz/Cerrato worked their asses off recruiting. Freeman still has to grow in many areas, but it's amazing feeling to have someone who cares and is willing to put in the work.

Great question. I would say as it stands, no.

Would not want to be the guy who follows Saban. I'm sure somebody is going to get the job and probably wants it, but I don't think it'll be Marcus on either front.

It's going to be a Jimmy Sexton guy.

I really like our roster right now, Freeman continues to recruit at a high level, and this is a good staff he has put together.

Maybe. I would not take it over OSUs, Ole Miss, or Georgia's though. Those teams are on another level in 2024 it seems.

Ole Miss is going to come damn close to a title if they don't win it completely, assuming they don't have damning injuries. I've been saying Kiffen is top 4 coach for years now and he's about to take a swing.

if so, I'm not sure how old school that logic is. Remember, Toledo would've beaten ND in 2021 in South Bend if they took a knee and kicked the chip shot FG vs. running in the TD with a minute left and giving Coan, Austin, Mayer and co. time to score. And I'm sure there are plenty of other cases. If your'e down 1, I don't think you ever play for a FG. But if you're tied or in the lead, take the knee, let the clock bleed.

If you consider converting a 2 pt conversion as a 50/50 chance, the numbers say got for 2 down 8 after the td. Best case scenario: you convert and the next extra pt wins. If you miss the 2 pt, then the odds say you get it next time

Yeah. At home, or against a significantly lesser opponent (so, two-thirds of our games) you probably take the one and play for OT. In a situation like Saturday night maybe you go for two. It's not just a math equation.
