CFB needs coaches like MMFF. Glad the Irish closed the deal on him.
What’s super frustrating is that the reaction went instantly to MF leaving after next year. I find it hard to understand why that’s the instant reaction. Let’s celebrate the fact that he is coming back - that he has signed on for an extra year - that the University has stepped up and made him one of the highest paid coaches. Why is that so hard?Nobody is unhappy or not enjoying the moment. I think everyone is just coming to terms with the reality that he won’t be here for much longer if he keeps maintaining this level of success, so we need to strike ASAP before he leaves.
You are the one that got all upset and starting calling people pussies for acknowledging what is right in front of our faces. I get you want to act ignorant that
1. Bevacqua acknowledged its year to year
2. Freeman is getting restructured contracts every year
3. It has come out that Freeman was in communication with multiple teams
4. Freeman himself worded his return in a specific way that implies he is year to year
5. Freeman himself words his answers about leaving extremely carefully
Noticing this pattern is not the same as being unhappy or a pussy or a sadomasochist, you’re literally having a breakdown over it.
Here's how I would phrase it:Maybe a dumb question, but has Freeman really showed that much interest in the NFL? Or just using the NFL to get a raise?
I'm with you in the sense that I'd rather focus on what's right ahead of us (another year of Feeeman). That said, I understand the sentiment from the board because program building is a multi year endeavour and ND finally has a coach whose recruiting chops (paired with rev share and NIL) are overcoming ND's historical recruiting disadvantages vs their peers. He happens to be a well above average on field coach as well and that combination of coach + recruiter + character puts him in the upper echelon of "total packages".What’s super frustrating is that the reaction went instantly to MF leaving after next year. I guess? I am just not wired that way. I love what MF is doing at ND - I hope he stays here for a while - but I now KNOW for certain he is here next year with an amazing roster and a coaching staff that seems to be bought in as well. I choose to celebrate that….I'm with you in the sense that I'd rather focus on what's right ahead of us (another year of Feeeman). When Alabama was contending every year it felt like Nick Saban was going to be there for the long term. When Dabo Sweeney was winning Nattys and competing every year it felt very similar. The same can be said right now with the likes of Kirby Smart. There is rarely any talk that he'd leave Georgia. The ND fan base is frustrated that they think ND has a guy at / near that level and don't get to enjoy that same feeling of coaching security.
Josh Pate (subjectively handsome man) has been too busy with his new (objectively gorgeous) wife to fact check any assertions.Side note: wish someone would destroy that loser Josh Pate, who was sooooo convinced Freeman was taking the Giants job, when he was on with those barstool idiots
- sorry… that she’s arrogance just bothers me
There is nothing wrong with you viewing life through that prism my dude. It's probably healthy.I guess? I am just not wired that way. He's been on ESPN a lot this season, so not a far flung theoryLast season he wasn’t bad. This season it’s like someone has hacked him and changed his views.

Makes complete and total sense. It's how it works more often than not. Here's how I would phrase it:
-When Penn State and Florida call his agent, he tells his agent he's not interested
-When the Giants and some others contact his agent, he listens to what they have to say

He's also in a no win situation because of the 24/7 coverage these days. If he says he's staying long term and doesn't, he'll be vilified. He says he's in for 2026. That's good enough for me. Yeah, I'd love it if he said he'd be here for the next 10 years. But that's just not the world we live in right now. I completely understand taking the path of least resistance publicly. As far as Freeman and not knowing the man personally, I get the sense that the person you see in interviews and on the TV is the same person Freeman is off camera. Marcus has shown an ability to focus on the now and not look too far down the road or into the future. So many interviews, he has stressed the ONLY game is the NEXT game. I think with him quietly allowing the process to work itself out not focusing on 2027 and beyond, that Is Freeman staying consistent and focusing on the now and not focusing on anything but the players coming back and the 2027 recruiting class.
Erickson was never that good without a huge talent advantage provided by flagrant cheating at Miami and the Fiasco Bowl year in Oregon State (85 + TJ Houshmensomething).I keep coming back to the fact that Marcus Freeman, who turns 40 in a few weeks, has spent his entire life in the states of Ohio and Indiana. I don't know if that's just his network or if there are some deep rooted midwestern values in the guy, but the idea of him and his 43-12 National Championship less resume going to the New York Giants just seems like a bridge too far. The historical trends on this are hard to deny.
NFL culture is very different. I know times have changed in the college game, but the cautionary tale is a guy like Dennis Erickson. He probably won close to 200 games as a college head coach. Won 2 National Championships. He had two bites at the NFL apple and both ended up crashing out pretty hard. Most people bring up Saban, Jimmy Johnson, Poodle and Harbaugh. Erickson, for me, is the guy that is probably the most likely outcome for how most of these dudes are going to turn out. You're going to go, and then you're going to wind up right back in college. Erickson is unique in that he got a second chance in the NFL.
You find NFL coaches in the NFL. This isn't to say that there will not be mutual interest between Freeman and NFL teams, but until there is a formal interview, I'm not going to worry about interest and back channel footsie. Again, as a Bears fan, I wanted zero part of Marcus Freeman last year or any other college coach. NFL programs need NFL people that know how to run them.
We talk about Freeman's results on the field a lot. Another topic is his mic skills. We haven't had a HC who is so good with the media post St Lou.As far as Freeman and not knowing the man personally, I get the sense that the person you see in interviews and on the TV is the same person Freeman is off camera. All this makes sense to me, as a Steeler fan I want Tomlin gone, and if that ever comes to fruition.... MF doesn't hit my top 10 to replace him. College football rah rah guys like MF and Kirby are amazing at this level and I don't have a doubt they would not have the same success at the next level. Maybe in 15+ years for both guys I mentioned, but right now...they connect to well to these young men. Not a bad thing.I keep coming back to the fact that Marcus Freeman, who turns 40 in a few weeks, has spent his entire life in the states of Ohio and Indiana. He speaks well and looks good, but for me....I'd love him to go off script every once in a while and not give the ND Football coach answer. Every once in a while, I'd love to hear from the fired up ex LB who shoots from the hip!Erickson was never that good without a huge talent advantage provided by flagrant cheating at Miami and the Fiasco Bowl year in Oregon State (85 + TJ Houshmensomething).
I was at ASU when Dennis was floundering along incapable of winning one in five games that would have gotten them to the PAC title game. Erickson was destined for mediocrity at best when the NCAA put his program on probation. So it's not like he gave up very much to try the NFL.
Side note, I did not know he was still in coaching after ASU
